My theory is accept the bribe then ignore it and use a different supplier.
Clearly no undue influence has been exerted that way.

Um, Christmas Illuminations, somewhere in Lancashire, apparently. In daylight they look like palm trees, but when it goes dark ..........

It's a great but old photo, and I think the original sourcing places it in Florida, which means the palm trees make an awful lot more sense.

They lied to me about Lancashire then. In fact, now I come to think of it, Lancashire didn't make any sense at all, there's nowt Christmassy about it. Never mind, it gave me a giggle.

As an aside. Photobucket is now a pile of foetid dingo's kidneys.

And foetid is the correct English spelling of the word, although me browser insists on putting a wiggly red line under it.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

Technically it should be a dipthong, I guess. Fœtid. Autocorrect doesn't like that either.

Author:  Doctor Glyndwr [ Tue Dec 12, 2017 15:25 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

That's a ligature, not a diphthong. The former is the typographical entity, the latter is the sound it represents.

Author:  Cras [ Tue Dec 12, 2017 15:27 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

I was of course referring to the sound it makes. Obviously.

This article in today's Oxford Mail about a 'hero farmer who ploughs snow for free', complete with pictures of said hero farmer, is slightly undermined by one short paragraph which isn't referred to again in the rest of the hagiography:

Quote:
Over the past three days, he has sent his plough man [name] out to clear roads in four parishes around where he lives in Hinton Waldrist, near Kingston Bagpuize.

Eh, I think that's fair enough. If you look up who built Buckingham Palace you get John Fitch, not the people he employed.

I also notice that the ambulance service has a Polaris for all-terrain stuff. That seems like a really odd choice to me, what with them being so small.

The guy looks exactly like him, but maybe age is betraying him. He looks younger than me and yet Tormund is 39.

I just checked and Tormund is 1.83m (a bit shorter than me). The guy living in my building is taller than me.

The probability that Tormund is living in my building dropped to 30%

Yeah I'd call sending an employee out to do something like that "civic-minded" rather than "heroic". Reading the headline does make it sound at least like some farmer who was out there himself in the freezing cold in his tractor.

I agree with Mark. Heroic is the guy working out in the cold. The guy that sent his workforce out to help the community had done a great thing, but ‘heroic’ is a bit much.

Serendipity alert.

I have landed myself a new job working in Bolton starting some time in the New Year once I have negotiated my 3 month notice period. I'm off to do a similair kind of thing but at a normal accountants and not in the contracting industry - which is a big YAY.

I went to my guitar lesson (for the wedding remember?) on Monday and let the guy know I wouldn't be working in Wilmslow anymore in the future. He then tells me *he's* moving to Bolton in January and he is moving to the actual road where my new employers are, so I can still nip and have lessons of a lunch with him.
