Wrong! It's still great.

You tried playing it recently? And not just to dabble, but to try and finish it from the start?

As it happens, I have. I didn't finish it but I definitely enjoyed the time I had with it.

I wondered the same thing about Demon's Souls (25th) and Dark Souls (2nd). I've not played Demon's Souls yet, but I assumed Dark Souls was more of the same but with a bit extra here and there?

XCOM but not XCOM2, even though it improves on almost everything with the first game? (and that's before the new expansion which improves on the improvements)

Travesty etc. etc.

Didn't you play it multiple times through to completion? It must have been doing something right.

I'm struggling to think of games as polished and memorable as Dead Space that went the Resi 4 action survival route other than The Last of Us. The Evil Within? Alan Wake? The former is great but it's not top 100 worthy. Alan Wake was a bit pants.

Did I? Just once, I thought, but perhaps I've forgotten. I've done RE4 twice, and RE5 three times (!)

I have a vague recollection that you did as well. Am I right in believing that you could play through again with all the weapons upgraded from a previous play?

Yeah, I remember starting to play through again with my 'weapons' starting off where the first play through left them.

I really want to play it again now :D

Played 23 "finished" 5, and that includes FTL.

Own a few in the top 20 but only finished portal and hl2

My posting history here has no reminders that are useful, although with you saying that as well I guess it's probably true.

I did find this ace post though, from a thread where I was picking between Dead Space and Far Cry 2:

You forgot ALL THE ZELDAS.

And all the games made after 2000. ;)

You can't have Moonstone though. That bloody thing was fab but I never once made it to the end without it crashing. It was a notoriously buggy mess.

EDIT: or James Pond 3, it was a shit Sonic clone.

I'd say James Pond 3 was more of a Super Mario World clone, but for some reason, I always preferred it to Mario or Sonic.

And I've never enjoyed a Zelda game enough to complete it. Wind Wake was alright, but I still gave up on it.

LIES. I had the big A4 box copy for xmas. Might still have it somewhere.

Or did I? Christ, now you've got me thinking I was a big filthy pirate. Which I was, but I still got the odd boxed game.

Edit: I'm not sure you're right. Even with a quick google I've come across talk of "infamous game breaking bugs." No, I think my recollection is right about this one.

No Sonic games either.

A fair few I've never heard of, though.

No 'Leisure Suit Larry?' No 'Chucky Egg?' No 'Danger UXB?'

I'm aghast.

I only played one off that list, the original Tetris.

I'd never heard of Danger UXB, so I hunted for a video of it

Looks alright actually, although by level five, the speed certainly ramps up.

It was indeed 'alright.' Simple to play and understand, and yes, it got faster and faster, but with perseverance I got faster too. A good game for just a few mins if you had a little time to kill.

Oh, I really like Buggy Boy as well. My kids and I used to play that incessantly.

It's not a bad list at all IMO, it's always going to be easy to pick holes or point out omissions from one's own perspective, but they seem to have got most bases covered and have resisted the urge to put a load of old crap in because they felt duty bound to. (I'm a firm believer that the vast majority of old games belong very much in the past.)

The one thing that stands out to me is Tetris in the top ten, which is a game that I've never, ever liked - right from when it was brand new and the cool kid in town.

I do like the way they've gone for some very finessed choices, such as Out Run 2006 Coast to Coast as their 'arcade racer' on the list, as I think you can make a very strong case for that game being the single best arcade racing game ever. (And hard to get hold of now, since Sega don't have the Ferrari licence anymore so you can't buy it digitally, so it's old physical copies only now.)

As other have already noted, I'd personally have Doom 2016 comfortably in my own top ten. In fact, I'd go top five.

So yeah, a reasonable stab at a Top 100 Best Games Ever list, I'd say.

I think for me, Tetris was pretty much the perfect handheld game when it came out for the game boy. I've played, and enjoyed, other versions since, but the game boy one suited its platform perfectly. When I was coming up with my list, I could barely think of other handheld games that I'd even put on there, besides that and Card Fighters, which again, suited the Neo Geo Pocket perfectly.

I originally got hold of it on the C64 (which did at least possess an amazing ambient soundtrack that played constantly in the background), I recall playing it on the Amiga as well - and not liking either version. (And obviously I've played various other versions over the years.)

When I got a Game Boy it came with Tetris, and at the time I was working night shifts at a 24 hour garage in Prestwich, a situation you would think would be a perfect match for a game like that on a handheld. Nope, still didn't like it.

My handheld game for the list would probably be Wario Ware on the GBA.

I went to Youtube to remind myself of the music of the Spectrum 128k version and I noticed that it actually recommends the C64 version's music in the little scroller on the homepage -

Advance Wars is in the OP list and thoroughly deserves it. Wario Ware is excellent too, and might feature in my personal top 100. Also: Zelda Link to the Past.

It's great to see INSIDE on that list since it is a slice of pure perfection.

It's a nice surprised to see The Last Guardian in there though. It's certainly shouldn't be above Shadows of the Collosus (and neither should ICO but I recognise that people will always love one more than the other). I should probably replay it. The technical faults are often very frustrating but it's such a beautiful game that you can mostly look past them. The switch from daylight to twilight about 2/3rds of the way through the story was one of my most memorable gaming experiencing of the current gen thanks to the HDR support.

Tetris for DOS is the only way to go. No stupid distracting background, no indecipherable bonuses, just pure straightforward playability. I've tried other versions, but this is still my Tetris of choice.

Nintendo really nailed in when they packaged the Gameboy with Tetris.
