I'm surprised you'd bother buying phones when you'll get them free from work, especially as a new Pixel won't be far away.

I fancy that new Note but can't justify the expense at the moment.

That's a good point, do you get to keep/sell on your old ones Rich? :P

So, I did a comparison, but nothing seemed to match the happiness that my 5x gave me, so I've ordered a new one, should be here tomorrow.

On that note, my other one had been turning on and lasting for a minute or so and seemed to be staying on for longer. I took it with me today and it's been perfect all day! ?:|

A genuine thanks for the recommendations though folks, it's been interesting to see what is available currently.

Can you not emulate it (or any phone) on a google, or is it just cheaper to buy phones than write software to pretend to be them?

I still have them, but I don't own most of them so I'm not at liberty to pass them on.

Off the top of my head, I have a Nexus 6, a 6P, a Pixel XL, and I had a 5x but I lost it in a house move. Oh and a Nexus 9 and Pixel C and a Nexus 7. And I had two other Pixels before that XL because they kept giving me different models to test.

It seems like a missed charitable opportunity for Google to wipe these devices down and hand them on, though perhaps I'm being naive and how hard it is to properly wipe something...

That's exceptionally funny because for a few years now my job has been to create and then expand this service
https://support.google.com/googleplay/a ... 0?hl=en-GB
...which tests Android developers' apps on physically Android devices racked in data centres.

No, you can't really emulate. There's differences you miss that way.

(Also this new phone isn't for any formal testing. It's just so I can have a look at it, really.)

Most of them are pre-release prototypes that have exciting characteristics like flaking paint, crappy finish, weird codemarks, and lack things like CE kite marks and FCC certification. Can't do anything with those.

I think we might have programmes that recycle some hardware for charities, although it's more complex than it appears at first glance. Knowing 100% there is no data persistence is one; electrical safety stuff is another.

Ah, so you don't have, for instance, an actual Nexus 6 but rather, "some device that looks and mostly acts like an N6 but might actually randomly set fire to your trousers?"

At the point before the next flagship is released that makes sense, but do you guys never get handed a production phone as a daily driver? In terms of bedding in changes to core apps it seems like doing that would be a really good idea.

It varies across the company and by what role you're in. As I technically work for Android I have some access to test handsets, sometimes very early, and I enjoy that (although it's not without its downsides) so I haven't very often bothered to also get the final phone. Also the last round of test devices aren't any different to the shipping model except for some cosmetics like logos.

Some time soon I might do a general sales thread, but here's one very specific one-does anyone with a G5 need a screen protector? These https://www.amazon.co.uk/Protector-Temp ... ered+glass ship with 2, so I've used the one I need and have a spare. Complete. £2, all in.

I'd favour a non-conductive non-scratching toothpick, personally. Or - even better - a spudger, if you have one to hand.

Just over 2 weeks to upgrade day and I'm leaning towards the Huawei P10. The Nokia 8 is an option, but it seems overpriced.

Recommend looking at the OnePlus 5, it really is very nice, and around the same price as the P10

I should have a Nokia 8 in time for the cottage in case you want to take a look at it? Not sure what you'll see... It's just Android isn't it?

I might get a Xiaomi Mi A1.

I've liked the look of their hardware for a while, but didn't like the look of their custom version of Android, but this one is an "Android One" phone, so ships with a stock build of android, and is guaranteed to be updated to the latest version for two years.

Kind of looks the same to me as what the Nexus lineup used to be. Cheap phone with solid specs and nice if fairly plain hardware, with a clean android experience. Before Google shifted to making high end expensive flagship phones with the latter Nexus and Pixel models.

It's £170 + any import duties, full specs here, but it's 1080p 5.5" screen, 64gb/4gb, mid range but power efficient processor, solid metal frame and good battery life. Reviews say it's very similar in design, look and feel to the iPhone 7+.

Biggest weakness seems to be no NFC, battery life is good but some other similar models have a bigger battery (but stock Android is more power efficient), and the processor/GPU can't match performance of top end models, but since it's only pushing a 1080p display I don't think it will be a problem.

I don't really need an expensive phone these days, and the main advantage that the high end phones have is the lack of bezels, which is obviously nice to have, but not really necessary.

I've ordered the Pixel 2. It wasn't any more expensive on a monthly plan than the Nokia or the Huawei.

Well, it was. A bit.

I'm weak.

But I did get a free Google Home Mini so it can listen to me 24/7 and report back the CIA about my nefarious activities

I was tempted by the Pixel 2 but it was just a bit too expensive for me and also, the headphone socket. That was a deal breaker.

I don't use the headphone socket on mine anyway. Oh, wait I do. But it's only for testing audio at work and my work phone has a socket. Most of my music and audio listening is done via bluetooth.

I'e had the Pixel 2 for a few days and here are a few thoughts.

Firstly, it's a really nice phone. Having being stuck in budget phone land for about a year, it feels really good to have a premium model in my hands again. Everything is fast, no delays, no lock ups. Very snappy. It's got plenty of space without having to lean on an SD card and that improves matters no end. No doubt about it, it's a really nice phone.

Second though. This marks the first time in my phone-ownership career (going back to probably 1998 or so) that I've got a new phone with a *smaller* screen than my last one. I feel that the 5" screen is pretty much perfect for a pocketable phone. Certainly more pocketable than the Moto G4 with a case on.

The camera is lovely. It has optical and digital stabilisation on it which (much like my telephoto lens on the SLR) gives me a bit of motion sickness! Weird. But it takes really good pictures.

Criticisms? Without a case on, it felt really slick to hold. I don't know if this is thing with aluminium phones, but it felt like it was going to slip off anything that I put it on. A simple bumper case has fixed that though. No gallery app. Grr, forgot about that from the Nexus. Annoying.
