Last night I was doing a bit of pond maintenance with my son “helping”.

I get to the 2nd pond and my son chucks my secateurs in, they land on a Lilly pot so are only in about 6 inches of water.

I put my hand in to get them and get a mild electric shock. Then I do it again and the same thing, so one last time and I get them out.

At this point I was worried as this pond it my wildlife one and is full of newts, so I’m thinking any minute now I’m going to see them all dead on the surface. Put my hand in again and no shock?!

Check this morning and no dead animals and no shock.

I would say the shock was no worse and maybe a bit less that one of those electric shock roulette games you can buy.

No idea why this would happen, there had been no pump cables moved and that was working, everything is in IP65 boxes etc.

Both you and the newts are now immune to electric shocks?

Are you sure the water wasn't just really cold?

Electric eels?

All I can think off is that maybe there is a rip in the pump cable and its making contact with the water.

That said I would expect the breakers to flip which would have taken the whole garden power out

Think I'll replaced the pump tomorrow as I can't see that there is anything else that could be at fault

Switch off the electrics. Get a professional to have a look. Especially if it's mains powered. Don't fuck around with electricity.

Solved:)

It was the pump, water had the shock factor again tonight so I lifted it out.

Couldn't see any issues, but as soon as I put it back in the water, shock factor returned

So unplugged and in the bin, will get another one tomorrow.

Well, in reality it was obviously an earthing or shielding issue with the pump, if it was full blown 240V 13A mains either the consumer unit would have tripped or we wouldn't have seen the start of the thread :)

So it was the electric thing in the water causing the electrical mystery. I'm shocked. Or rather, you were. Ho ho.

I went to my local Maidenhead Aquatics today to some more goldfish and a new pump

I had to buy the exact same bloody model of pump as its the only one for my size of pond that does filtering etc!

Keeping the receipt this time!

A naughty person might try putting the old pump back in the new box and asking for a refund in a couple of months time :ninja:

That's a good idea, sadly I put the old one in the bin and they just collected it 10 mins ago!

Best not to try and trick the universe anyway, you've already got away with avoiding electrical death.
