Quote:
Nioh is an arresting game, one that consistently encourages and spurs its players on even when it’s beating the tar out of them. It showers its challengers with increasingly powerful weaponry but is never shy about pummeling them via some hulking, terrifying demon from Japanese folklore’s ghastliest recesses.

When you mix in gorgeous looking artwork, as well as console graphic options that allow for adjustable framerate, you’ve got a game that really does go all out. This is backed up by terrific music, sound effects, and immersively diverse voice acting that crosses linguistic lines.

Nioh got attention for its similarities to other titles, but it deserves to be remembered as its own special game, one that sees and raises the efforts presented by its inspirations. With fast and uncompromising combat, an engrossing economy of loot, and a mesmerizing artistic style, action-RPGs have rarely been this refined or this captivating.

And the little green boys have bowls on their heads and that’s just delightful.

10/10

How 'Nioh' Tells Stories Through the Deaths of Other Players

When you're surrounded by the failures of others, you can't help but pause and wonder.

There are dozens of little touches and design ideas that Nioh plucks from FromSoftware's Souls series, and in many cases, developer Team Ninja put their own spin on it. One of the most effective is bloody graves, the game's riff on bloodstains, which mark the spot another player died in. The Souls games are judicious about where those bloodstains show up—Nioh is not. Instead, the bloody graves become a blaring red siren that death is around the corner.

Would you quantify that with the volume of piss it boils ,the speed , the time to a rolling boil ?

Dark Souls would boil 500ml of piss in 18.4 seconds

Whats your weapon of choice Pundy ?

I'm still using the big black axe that i got fairly early on but wondering about switching for some of the others to hit the bonus points and familiarity buffs for them (I did that with the first knife on a rope that i picked up but went back to the axe and have been pretty much only using that)

Author:  Pundabaya [ Fri Feb 17, 2017 20:13 ]
Post subject:  Re: Nioh (PS4)

I am using a yamoto-den uchigatana. A sword, basically. It's a blue named one and it's random buff is one that increases familiarity damage by a chunk. I feel the one handed sword is the lack of all trades, good damage, reasonably fast attacks, easy to use.

I do think that it's a slight weakness in that a) all the weapons have slightly confusing (often Japanese) names b) the loot is random c) there are subtypes (tachi vs uchigatana) d) loot is chucked at you like diablo or Borderlands.

It means that, unlike Soulsborne games, you can't really help. You can't say, "ah, you can find X weapon here, it should help."

Anyway. The bow and matchlock are really handy. Note: the bow is silent, the matchlock less so. Obviously. Headshots decimate most opponents.

I played some of this earlier and the combat was a strange but welcome mix of Ninja Gaiden and Dark Souls and/or Bloodborne. I kinda like it.

Should I be overly concerned about using med kits though or are they abundant enough? I say this because two knights gave me a bit of good kicking and two hits from them basts got me down to a slither of health.

One of the concerns I had from the pre release is the way that you had to scrounge for health packs and rebuild after a defeat.

I haven't heard anything about this in the full release, but it is probably the main reason I haven't been overly keen to get the game.

Mind you, your med kits replenish at bonfires so I'm thinking they're just the same as estus.

I've died plenty.

They're the same as estus' but you can get the odd one or two from killing enemies like Bloodborne.

So far it's a nice mix of Souls and Borne in an oriental setting, mind you I haven't even got by the demo level yet...

I quite like Nioh's take on Dark Souls blood splatters. It's not mentioned above but essentially if you see a grave rather than showing you the moment of death (like Dark Souls) you can call the spirit into your world and fight it (as a non-player character mind). These can be some of the most challenging fights outside of the bosses and you have a chance to bag you some of the loot the dead guy was holding at the moment of death.

I’d love to play the DLC but apparently I’m dangerously underlevelled (level 110 whereas it’s a level 150 mission). The very first boss of the DLC can sodding one-shot me. God knows how I managed to finish the game at that level as the final missions are level 140+.

Time to grind... hnnngh.

It’s still rocking good fun though. The combat is awesome and darr I say better than Dark souls.

Starts at 6:00 and he gets me down to my last estus. I’m incredibly fortunate he doesn’t manage to hit me with his phase 2 purple warrior that he’s swinging in my face. I’ve noticed that I get very cautious and I’m trying to bait him into one move where he throws his sword so I can nip in for a slash and back up. That was challenging and rewarding - like the bestest Souls bosses.

Post subject:  Re: Nioh (PS4)

Well, got to the third area/hub place yesterday.
As it turns out, I decided to go for the ninja whip as my main weapon. Its pretty groovy. But no one else seems to use it, making looting other players corpses for a better one troublesome. if I'd wanted a stupid oodachi, I'd be quids in. Because everyone and their corpse uses one.
Turns out using a whip makes grave looting rather easy due to the range (and it goes hand in hand with all the ninja skills, including the one that makes your opponent unable to target you, which is very useful}
Somewhat down on attack power though, so backup sword is useful. Is pretty fun.

At this point, not sure if I have the will to finish it though, I'm not overly good at it and I suspect at some point it's going to pull some powerful bullshit. And the hit detection is a bit poo at times. Seeing my weapon pass through someone with no effect, only to have their oodachi ram itself into my guts is a somewhat frustrating experience. The way it doesn't always register dodges is also the cause of many a death. As is the generally over complicated control scheme as a whole. Water blob boss with his one hit kill nonsense was... A bit rubbish, but more over I'm not that fond of the wave/arena combat it has a habit of throwing at you. I hope they keep that to side missions.

WHIP WHIP WHIP.

Author:  Satsuma [ Fri Jun 29, 2018 10:16 ]
Post subject:  Re: Nioh (PS4)

The hit-detection is no more of an offender than your Dark Souls game. I’ve no idea why dodges aren’t working though - maybe press the button harder? The combat (on console at least) was fast, fluid and tight. Think more Ninja Gaiden/DMC than DS and zip in and out between moves on your opponent. It’s immensley satisfying.

NB: I’ve no idea why the big blob boss one-shotted you unless (a) you’re underlevelled - this was only really a problem for me in the DLC; or (b) you were unfortunate to walk into the highly telegraphy BIG LASER - in which case, head slap emoji to you sir.

Author:  Mr Dave [ Fri Jun 29, 2018 10:26 ]
Post subject:  Re: Nioh (PS4)

I'm not the only one who's found dodges not working.

The blob laser was not always telegraphed. It seemed to skip the telegraphing after debris spewing. But that was fine. The one shots during the second phase were considerably more trying given the lack of space to manoeuvre.

Finished that Waterboss t'other night. VERY satisfying to kill, took many attempts and varied tactics.

I found the centipede boss very easy before that, think it was 2nd or 3rd attempt.

Weapons wise it's ‎Kusarigama / Single Sword all the way for me. Heavily invested in Dex and Magic stats.
