The 'Crystal Maze' theme would make for awesome entrance music for my wedding or funeral (whichever comes first). That or the 'Jurassic Park' theme.

Motherfucker I want second row at your wedding.

My first impressions of the relaunch are very positive. Richard II was excellent as host, providing the appropriate level of detachment, annoyance, and boredom whilst coming across as a whole new character. Perhaps Ed would have had more of a chance had he not been the immediate successor.

He showed enthusiasm, and he had a great prop. Wish they'd not started with a 'celebrity' version as it threw off the dynamic a bit, but looking forward to watching again.

Also, Industrial zone for the win.

He utter disdain for Louis The Prancer was delightful.

Outside, now ;)

Industrial and Future had the best sets. I hate to say it but the former looked really authentic and suitably grimy. My doubts about the zone remain, because the style of puzzles (avoid dangerous liquid; play with the gadget) always feel too thematically similar to the sciency-Future ones. And I like ships.

Aztec looked a little too fake, but perhaps that's part of its charm. I don't think the teleport mechanic for leaving Future worked because I rather like the cutscenes of teams running to the next zone but I'll probably get used to it.

I read that they've struggled with the Aztec zone and making it look realistic. When the show was first on, it wasn't transmitted in HD so they could get away with it looking a little fake. Now, there's no hiding it.

E02 is a celeb special, too.

Oh, and E03.

Oh.

The team consisted of Me, DavPaz, you, Malia, Kov and my mate Frank... but now I think about it, I'm not sure I received Malias details so I may have made them up.

I'm not sure why we didn't hear anything back? I can't imagine there were many other all male, all white, 30-40 year olds wanting to take part?

Regarding last night's, the laser maze looked impressive but one or two of the other games felt too simple. I also found myself unexpectedly warming to Joey Essex.

Joey Essex is maddeningly likeable. I'm 90% sure that he's not as dumb as he pretends to be

He seems like a genuinely nice, genuinely dumb guy - who was blessed by being born obscenely good looking.

Post subject:  Re: The Crystal Maze

I saw him
On something once, and I don't think he is genuinely dumb. he seems to have a great sense of what is expected of him in his role as 'Joey Essex' and can play that perfectly. He may or may not be another Einstein, but he knows how to get things 'wrong' in just the right way for them to be funny, which takes intelligence in itself.

Yeah, I got the impression that he was struggling to balance playing his character with genuinely wanting to enjoy and do well in the Maze.

Same with Danny Dyer. He's not thick by any means, he plays it really well.

Watched the first two proper episodes and am enjoying them. Having a team made up of people who know each other and watching their interaction is so much more fun than a cobbled together batch of C-listers. The captain in the first episode was alarmingly methodical and cold, whilst the immense joy this week's team were having despite their general uselessness made for fun viewing.

Richard II's openness about the artificiality of the show is surprisingly not stale either.

Not really a spoiler but I don't think the slidy plank game in Aztec had enough peril for an automatic lockin when you could clearly just walk out.

Might try and persuade Mimi for another watch as the celeb ones were so awful with each of them showing off so much.

Still enjoying the series. Disappointed that the entrance to the Aztec Zone no longer involves boats but can't have everything.

I also appear to have developed an appreciation for young men in jumpsuits (especially after water games) but that's not really important right now.

Have a watch of him on something like 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown - he's not a stupid man, he's incredible at not breaking character.

I think he's actually a pretty good actor. And he's said before he has taken not so great roles because he had to pay the mortgage and feed the kids. Prior to Football Factory, and Cadfael, I think he was on stage, doing Pinter.
