As an aside, Amazon lists Conspiracy Theory as a 'rom com/thriller'. Ok, there are elements of romance, and certainly some funny bits, but I can't imagine watching Mel Gibson having his eyelids taped open and getting tortured would set the right mood on valentine's day. Or maybe it would.

Just check on the connections, depends how many devices you'll be having plugged in. Unless you have an HDMI receiver to pass things through. Like me.

In the taxi on the way back to Langdale, the taxi driver was a big scouse guy. Bermuda shorts, shaven head, la coste polo shirt, blue toith ear piece, greek cigarettes and snow white trainers. I liked him from the get go, as a non judgey person I appreciate the local colour. Anyway, we were all chatting about Tom Hanks films and he was trying to remember "The name of the one where Tom Hanks is in law enforcement and there's the autistic kid". Turns out, he meant Mercury Rising, not, as I thought, Toy Story.

About 45 mins (looking at text message and bar receipt)to get us from Wasdale Inn to Sticklebarn pub (where I got out) over Hardknott and Wrynose and then however long to get to Ambleside to drop the others. Paid a bit of a tourist tax, but over the passes in someone else's car always good.

Bit of a tourist tax, (I've paid £25 each way in the lakes to go 500 yards as the crow flies (2 miles by road) as cab on meter from Penrith.) But decision was "walk extra 5 hkurs around scarfell and back over Bow fell or walk one hour, 4 pints a meal and £25 each home.

Oh, we passed the little railway that made MrsA pregnant which was amusing.

You should have just stayed in the pub and sent the one with the greatest chance of survival back over the hill to get the car.

Yes, it is a 4x4 Mega Block.

Don't worry, I didn't let him. I mean, sharp edges and all, but mostly I'm worried that he's going to build a set of stairs to get out of his cot.

I'd take the Sammy over the LG, because I have a Samsung at home and an LG at work and the "smarts" stuff is better on the former.

Thanks Grim - I've also been less than impressed with the LG I currently have (sound rapidly became bad so have had to have speakers for it for last couple of years) but that could be an issue with the specific model or indeed individual TV.
Jem - precisely the approach I was otherwise going to take :)
DavPaz - dunno really. Would be handy to be able to use the smarts stuff to use e.g. netflix without having to boot up the PS4, other than that...

I'd go with the Samsung based on. Otho g more than the fact that all the favourite TVs I've owned over the years have been Samsungs.

External speakers should be the first thing you get plugged into your TV. I'd take surround sound over HD, personally.

I agree. I couldn't bear the weedy speakers on modern LED tellies. I can leave surround sound though. Stereo's enough for me these days.

I only now use them because the external speakers are fucked and so's the jack.

ANYWAY THE SOUND IS NOT THE ISSUE.

This may or may not help, MrChris, but I have an HD LG which delivers an exceedingly odd experience.

it's only a 26-incher or something. The picture is super clear, but watching shows on Amazon or Netflix, the experience is jarring.

It's like the picture is so clear that it feels like it's lost something from the post-production process.

What looked like a grimy bar in American Gods now looks like a set.

Ditto that immaculate office in House of Cards.

There's almost a faint jerkiness to people's movements.

As you can see it's terribly hard to describe, but the net effect is that big-budget stuff ends up feeling TV-movie like. It's like you can see the seams.

It's perhaps similar to the criticism that was levelled at Peter Jackson for that technique he used for the Hobbit* with lots of FPS (or summat).

*Making a big fucking balls-up of it, AMIRITE?

100hz mode.

You should be able to turn it off.

Sometimes called Sports mode. Some TVs even have a "football" button on the remote.

And you've switched off the Motion Interpolation/Smoothing setting that specifically does everything you're describing there, right? I mean, I phrase that as question but...

ETA: Note that LG calls that 'TruMotion' in it's marketing bullshit so it might appear as similar in the settings.

ETA2: Or possible De-Blur and De-Judder. Jesus. Just turn it all off and you'll be reet.

Old people can't see it. It's like those alarms that emit a high pitch to keep young people from hanging around outside Spar, but it affects sight, and the effect is lost post-middle-age.

And you've switched off the Motion Interpolation/Smoothing setting that specifically does everything you're describing there, right?

Gaywood always complains about that when he sees it. It's fucking invisible to me.

Old people can't see it. It's like those alarms that emit a high pitch to keep young people from hanging around outside Spar, but it affects sight, and the effect is lost post-middle-age.

And doccyg has been replaced by a robot.

Also Gaywood is older than me ;)
