My Grandad has managed to turn off his Toshiba Sattelite Laptop during a windows update or something and now it won't boot into Windows.

We managed to get it to a Start Windows Repair command screen but this just lets it load the windows wallpaper and an error box saying Could not load the system drive. Press ok to turn off the computer.

Googling says press 0 whilst turning on to get to the repair options but when we try that it says that it cannot repair the system as the boot drive is missing and to contact the system administrator.

Reading the manual shows that it is supposed to have a recovery partition, but we can't think how to get it to restore from that if we can't get to it.

Anyone got any ideas? Subsequent boots now don't even show the Start Windows Repair screen but instead some gobbledegook.

Well it's not finding a bootable partition, that's for sure. Boot into the bios setup and see whether it's recognising the drive at all. If it's not, you're a bit stuck. If it is, you're probably going to need to get a bootable USB drive with some disk repair tools on it and see if you can repair the mbr from that.

I can get into the bios. Option 1 for boot is the Hdd/SSD , option 2 is usb and option 3 is what I assume to be the cd drive. Selecting option 1 to boot from gives the same results though (cannot get to Windows)

Maybe I'll ask at work if they have the USB boot thingy. Thanks Cras.

I can't tell if this is a coded message to say "Please bring in your Grandad's Laptop to work and I will fix it for you" but I will assume... yes?

From memory, hold down f1 while booting. (If this fails, try all the other f keys.and maybe the number keys).

I'm sure it can be fitted in at some point.
Is there any data on it that might need recovering?

Yeah, but when you list out the drives in BIOS can you see the HDD?

We've gone on the assumption that if there was any data it is long gone (we aren't sure if there were some photos previously, but grandad had already come to accept that it is likely corrupt beyond recovery). I mean, it would be great if it were recoverable, but we've tried to do a bit of gentle expectations management as much as we can.
