68. Nub's Adventure: a pretty sizeable Metroidvania platformer for Android/iOS which focuses mostly on exploration, with no small challenge in some sections, and it probably the most traditional implementation of the form I've yet played on Android. Very, very good stuff indeed and comes highly recommended as I've been totally gripped by it for the week or so it's taken me to finish it. You know it's a good mobile game when you carry on playing it as soon as you get in the door after commuting home.
69. Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China: I was really looking forward to this as it looked very much like the incredible Mark of the Ninja. And mechanically it absolutely is with a very similar setup, but it's somehow much less than the sum of it's parts and just ends up being really boring after an hour or so. You do earn ability upgrades but they don't have much of an impact so the levels just end up being very samey and uninteresting. What's almost impressive is that they've managed to faithfully translate the unpredictable controls of the full fat AC games into a 2.5D setting so you're not always 100% sure where your character's going to go when you move the analogue stick. It might actually be that factor which separates it most from MofN because it loses the laser focus of the level design by trying to introduce this extra dimension. The presentation level is high throughout and it's watercolour stylings are genuinely beautiful in places but I've now got no desire to play through the two subsequent Chronicles games which probably tells you all you need to know here.

70. A Normal Lost Phone: another Android game that tells it's story via the medium of presenting you with the fake interface of a phone you've found and has you piece things together by going through emails and the like. It's very short and not badly put together in terms of the UI but a couple of the puzzles were counter-intuitive enough to derail the experience and it's certainly not as well done as SIM.

71. Hob: an exploration game with Metroidvania flourishes that sees you dropped into a world with no real context and left to clear it out of bad guys and some kind of creeping corruption that's fouling the place up. The action takes place both above and below ground but each part generally leads to you pulling a lever and watching massive chunks of landscape impressively spin, rise, fall, flip and generally reassemble itself into a configuration which allows you to press forward. There are collectibles which give you a number of advantages (i.e. longer health bar, new powers for your glove thing, etc) in combat but it's not a hard game at the best of times so I didn't even use some of the new powers I ended up with. The story is close to non-existent and even when I arrived without much fanfare at the ending I was none the wiser what was going on. Frankly it doesn't matter though because opening up the map and clearing out all the corruption is the main hook and it doesn't need anything else to grab you. It doesn't have the same beautifully lonely atmosphere of RIME and it's nowhere near as pretty but in some ways it's a more engaging game because it's less linear and has more stuff going on. Overall it's really good stuff and I loved the 10 or so hours it took me to finish it and open the entire map up. PSA: the performance on my PC at least was pretty ropey. It was generally fast and smooth but had blatant issues streaming in new parts of the open world as the frame rate would briefly crash through the floor with irritating regularity so maybe wait for a patch or pick up the PS4 version if it's better.

72. プラトモ: possibly stretching the definition of 'game' a bit here but an app that gives you 60 different household items of varying complexities but presented in pieces like an Airfix kit and challenges you to construct them all. There's not much in the way of challenge, and it'll even give you a subtle hint whenever you snap in a piece that will prevent adding something else, but it's strangely compelling and relaxing.

73. Doki Doki Literature Club: a freebie on Steam that's ostensibly one of those visual novel things that the Japanese seem to love which sees you romancing three school girls two school girls ☼Æ1╒156Ñ↓21AN74☻18♣3µ1◘j͖̮̯̺û̳̦̜̘ͅs̟̙̖͙̥ͅt̑̃ͯͭͯ ̳͙̯̹̩ͤ̂̊m̙̣̰̫̞̮̑̎o͖̜̒̐̑͒ͭn̥͈̊ͧ̓͗͒̈́̚i̤̤̱̗ͧ̽ͩ͌ͬ͆̚k̋̓a̝͉͖͔̯͉̳ͥ͐̔̑̚ ̝j͕̮͉̺͉ͪ͐ͥ̊u̦̻̐ͨ͗ṡ̥͉̗͈̠̈͌͗̏ͦt̜͖̰̜ͣ̊̅͊ͪ ͔͈̽͒͑͗m͇͍̼͈͎͎̮ͯͨͧo͖̰͇̳̬̙͓ͤn̩̬̮̤̱̰̠ͤ̆ï̗̥͇̈̅͊͌ͩk̤̘̹̳̰̰̰̐a̾͛̿̌ͦ ̦͉͕̘̟͕̹́͂͛̾̇̚jͥ̽̿ͭ̅̀uͯ̐s͓̦̩̉ͣ̆t̓ ͕̺̺͋̃̏̔͗́ḿ͎̞̉͊őͪ̔̈n͚͉̼̗̱̑̓̍͊ͬ͊i̳͖̘̻̓͊ͥͅk̺̭̩̤̟ͣ̊ͦͅa. The exact type of game Hatoful Boyfriend is riffing on in fact. I say ostensibly because the 'psychological horror' tag on the Steam page--and the game's own warning that's it's not suitable for children or the easily disturbed--is well earned by the time the credits finally roll. I don't want to say too much about it in case anyone wants to try it, and you should, but after an (arguably almost off-putting) amount of time presenting itself as a vanilla VN game the wheels come off it pretty damn quickly and what you get is something pretty damn weird and meta as all fuck. Suicide, mental illness and manipulation of the game's files to proceed are the order of the day. So, yeah.

I'm impressed by how they were really using the power of the Amiga to offer vast improvements in graphics and sounds over the original BBC Micro edition.

It's an impressive dystopian satirical masterpiece on the illusion of choice.

74. Stranger Things: as not only an advert for the next season of a TV show but also a mobile game to boot this checks all the boxes to be a fucking awful experience; which is makes it even odder that it's genuinely a brilliant little game. It's essentially a 2D Zelda-like, with some exploration in an overworld required to meet the conditions to open up a dungeon which ends with a boss fight and a new ability (in the shape of a new character found which you can switch to at any time). There are side quests to engage in and secrets to explore which earn your heart pieces and passive upgrades. All in all it's one of the better mobile games I've played in ages and certainly can't be beat for free. It's also worth noting that I've never seen any of Stranger Things and don't know a single thing about it so it's not even like my perceptions are being influenced by an enjoyment of the show.

Why was Granny so unconcerned about a child-napping witch in her back garden?

Because she had a team of 20-odd people on the case.

75. Hue: puzzle platformer based around a pretty unique colour-manipulation conceit and current PS+ 'freebie'. This looks and sounds lovely with a low-fi aesthetic that suits the borderline garish colour palette you're given to play with throughout. The colour changing mechanic isn't something I've seen before and it follows the usual progression that a good puzzle game needs i.e. start simple and ramp up the difficulty while introducing new idea as you progress. There was the odd occasion where I wasn't sure if I'd misread a potential solution or simply wasn't changing colours quickly enough but nothing too jarring. Also I'd say the difficulty curve needs smoothing out a bit as it's almost too easy for most of the game then the last level set ramps up pretty quickly. Nothing that would put off anyone who's played a few games like this but I mention it for completeness. Generally very good fun and not too long (two 'sessions' to finish it, though I'm not sure of actual hours elapsed) and a no-brainer for commuting and stuff if you've got a Vita.

The first level of this is just gorgeous; really top notch stuff. You’re attacking a castle with a giant moat. Against this backdrop of a larger battle, there’s piles of bodies burning, thick fog and flaming arrows that burst from the sky signalled by the sound of a gong. You make your way through this and through a dead village at the edge of the castle and through an underground cave into the castle keep. It’s level 200 and I’m stuck on level 160 (I lost 6 million souls like a twat and can’t be arsed farming them again) but it made it into a corking slog through rock solid enemies. It’s the best Dark Souls since the last Dark Souls.
