Popped over to a mates desk to borrow a marker (couldn't find it) but he had an original fat PSP tucked away that he said I could have :metul:

Now, I think it's been H4XX0R3D, so that's nice, but what do I want on there?

I'd like MAME if poss for some Raiden / R-Type / etc but what PSP games should I be nabbing?

Am I a Retro gamer now or just a beardless Hipster?

You definitely want the Gradius Collection. You get everything but Gradius V (Boo!) and Salamander (Also boo!).

And if you've never played it you MUST get Loco Roco & Locoroco 2. Those games will change your life.

And then get some of the PSP God of War games, because they're aces.

And maybe get the Metal Slug collection cause they look real nice.

I'm afraid your both.

Mame is a bit tricky to get set up on the PSP if I recall and because I have it on other handhelds, I've never really bothered.... But don't let that put you off! The console can play loads of stuff.

I'll tell you more when I get home.

Mame runs fine on it - although depending on what you want you might find some of the collection PSP builds look and 'feel' better (There are 2 capcom collections that i play regularly on my Vita) and a few Atari / Midway collections as well

The PSP has a near perfect (because its sony made) PS1 emulator , and you can play just about every PS1 title on there

Other PSP specific suggestions
Patapon (all 3 of them)
Ghouls and Ghosts ultimate (different names if its US / JP but a good update to GnG)
Metal Gear : Peace walker (if you can put up with the framerate now its a long time since i played it)
Castlevania Chronicles (a remake of the first game)
God of war collection
Ridge Racer (and I cant remember which one to go for - i think its the second release but since your haxoring it anyway try them - i spent a long time playing it multiplayer with a few friends all in the same room all on PSP's)
There are some good SF versions on there , i think Alpha 3 was the one i played the most - Teken is a little disappointing (if i remember correctly)
All the early final fantasy's are on there
Burnout ( again there are 2 - 1 is great one is so-so)
The early pinball farscape games are on there and play well especially if you turn the PSP on its side
Everybodys golf was one of the early PSP games and still plays really well if you like golf games

What Zaphod said basically... Although, I'm sure I tried MAME earlier this year on mine but couldn't get it working properly. In fairness, I probably gave up easily.

As for the PSone emulation, it will play lots of games but bear in mind that the PSP doesn't have as many buttons as a PSone controller and no second analogue stick. Annoying because you won't be able to play Silent Bomber on it.

That's a good list of games above so to expand on that, it's Ridge Racer 2 that you want. That's the best but if you want the absolute pinnacle of racing games on the PSP, go for Outrun 2. It's an amazing conversion.

You'll also want to get a Megadrive and NES emulator on there too to play some old games. They're better than new games you see, because they're old.

MotorStorm: Arctic Edge is one of my favourite PSP games!

You get to drive everything from dirt bikes to motorway maintenance trucks. The physics are really good, and the tracks are hugely entertaining, with loads of jumps, banked sections, and different ways through. Great stuff!

I played Final Fantasy Seven as a PS1 emulation on my PSP, and I loved it.

In fairness, I'd love it if I played it on a blackboard.

The nice thing about the PSP now is that you can get most games for a fiver, maybe a tenner at most (usually even brand new).

The fact that they come in the form of miniature DVDs built into a plectrum-shaped caddy is a bit strange at first, but in practice they're just like cartridges.

I don't know why, but the PSP has never really hooked me. I still buy stuff for it, but I think the only game I've invested any time in was Pursuit Force.

They do look quite nice on shelves though (probably look better if I put them in order or at least separated the UMDs out)

I wouldn't mind owning a PSP. The Konami shooting game compilations would be nice to own, I guess. Or any other of the good retro gaming compilations. Perhaps the Persona game(s) too. Nice.

Enjoyed owning my PS Vita very much, incidentally, despite the relatively small software library. Persona 4 Golden alone justified the price of the machine in terms of entertainment.

In hindsight, buying 35 Luigis may not have been the best of ideas.

Only just taken delivery of it today. He didn't have the charger etc at work so he said he'd give it me all together.

Think I'll be slapping some shooters on there first, Metal Slug, oh and Outrun Coast To Coast and Katamari.

Thanks for al the suggestions folks!

Best pre-Christmas ever!

One feature I like of the PSP is that you can get some component cables and hook it up to your telly (obviously no use if you want it for its portability).

It's a shame they disabled the Playstation Store for it though - I think you now have to download previous purchases on a PC and transfer them to memory card now.

Don't listen to Devliman, you don't actually have to 'buy' anything to use a PSP. Everything you could ever want to play on it is available as a download from somewhere... As long as you don't mind killing the game industry of course?

Never forget. Without a doubt the best PSP ever released. It's shocking that they've never released a version for the PS3 (no that screensaver game doesn't count), Vita or the PS4.

There was a version on the PS3 wasn't there? A proper version of the game?

Sony literally just announced that they're remastering Loco Roco on PS4.

The PS3 Loco Roco was more like an interactive screensaver than a proper game.

If you can't get MAME to work on your PSP you can get Final Burn Alpha for PSP as well, it'll handle all your mid to late 90's beat em up and shmup needs. I mostly play strategy RPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics and the Disgaea series but do have a few beat em ups and the Gradius Collection as well.

Ratchet and Clank Size Matters is a very impressive, very true R+C game for the PSP. It was the first one I'd played and the controls weren't half bad.

When I played Final Fantasy Tactics, I found that folks used a third party patch with it to make it actually fill the screen (seems like it's a naff Playstation port that's stuck bordered by default).

Some interesting exclusives: Echochrome, Echoshift (haven't played either), Practical IQ, Practical IQ2 (if you're into puzzles and stuff)

I had fun with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (but it's since been deemed NON-CANON™ so don't worry about paying too much attention to it.). Peace Walker was a PSP exclusive first, but you might prefer getting the big console versions instead.

Coded Arms was the first and possibly best FPS on the PSP. It doesn't try to do much except give you some robots to shoot and some techno beats to shoot them to. Just watch out 'cause it's stingy with the ammo.

Daxter was boring.

Gitaroo Man didn't thrill me much.

-DEFINITELY- get that thing modded though. You'll have every PSX game at your disposal. The SNES and Mega Drive emulation works at about 80% speed for me. I won Mother 3 on a GBA emu on it (and wrote a big thing about it on WoS I remember).

I couldn't get into the Burnout games on PSP. The nub wasn't up to it. I only used Liberty City Stories for the save-game exploit.

I originally got my PSP for playing Metal Gear AC!D since I dug the idea of the cards and I liked it at the time, but after replaying it I simply can't stand it. The first one is absurdly slow - sitting through enemy turns and slogging through menus bores me to tears. It -looks- like a good MGS though, which is a shame. You get a nicely modeled original sneaking suit Solid Snake to play as. The second one has a weird redesigned Snake, and is way faster and has inexplicable neon colours for things.
