Roujin Z is still on VHS. I took a load of old Anime VHSss to the charity shop last week. I've fell out of love for the genre. Except for Miyazaki of course. |

Liked My Neighbour Totoro, in fact when it comes to Miyazaki I've still got The Cat Returns to watch. Other stuff I liked. Wicked city is pretty good, though I haven't seen it in years. Urusei Yatsura. Subbed and mostly through Youtube. Funny as hell though in places. Patlabor. On video and really excellent. Robotech. Another oldie but goodie, though its about 3 different series spliced together. |

Good films too, though it would've been better stitched as one long film - although I think each one is about 2½ hrs so that may be why. |

I've read the first 9 books (of 13). Do you know if the movies cover all of them, as whilst the first seven or so were excellent, the story is really starting to drag now. For a non-spoilery answer, just tell me if the film involves the character of Near, as he only pops up in book eight or so. Cheers! |

No... he was dressed in traditional Oriental clothes and held a large book, if I recall. And he served the seven gods of somethingorother, who appeared behind him as menacing figures. |

Just for the record, I really enjoyed the films. Cool. He's a young fella. There are two of them who are rivals from an Orphanage, trying to bring down the people with the Death Note. 'Near' is the more honourable of the two. The other one is called 'Mello'. That's vague enough so as not to be spoilers. The books are well worth a read, though #9 was a bit rubbish. I may as well buy 10-13 though, for completeness. |

Alas, it wouldn't play on my PS2 or via the default player on the laptop. I then tried loading it via our DivX player, which also gave an error three seconds in, but I managed to skip past that. Alas, it seems to run perfectly and then just come to a juddering halt every couple of minutes. Not sure if it's a problem with the disc or with the codecs I have or something. What were you playing them on? |

No active Anime thread, Beex? For shame. I recently purchased the complete Lucky Star collection on DVD. I really enjoyed watching a fansubbed version years ago, and am falling in love with the series again. It may well be my favourite Anime series. It is reminiscent of Seinfeld, in that it purports to be a show about nothing. It is winsome. |

I had a minor Anime revival recently by watching the first two films in the Rebuild of Evangelion series. It's been ages since I saw the original series, so I can't really say how it compares. Who knows when parts 3 & 4 will get released though (and how long it will take before they're in a language I can actually understand). |

As most people know, I'm properly gay for Ghost in the Shell, and I even managed to spoil an episode of 2nd Gig for myself (this and this). My favourite is Battle Angel Alita, which I'm waiting for Mr Cameron to make a life-action version of (he says he wants to) because the original will doubtless be re-released on DVD. |

I just watched Appleseed Alpha, a cannon-bending prequel to the series. It was pretty good, the story involved robots punching each other and giant walking fortresses and stuff, so no complaints there. It looked incredible. Like Appleseed 2 it was all CGI and it was simply fantastic, especially Deunan and Briareos. The giant walking fortress thing was pretty cool too, especially when it shot stuff with its massive gun. |

People say it's really good. What does Furi Kuri mean, Dave? |
Author: | Mr Dave [ Thu Aug 11, 2016 22:56 ] |
Post subject: | Re: Anime |
Not entirely sure, its not a dictionary word. I think its word play, or nothing at all. chichikuriau is to have a secret affair, which is used in the comic scene in the first episode Which is then played upon a panel or two later as chichi wo kurikuri (chichi = breasts. kurikuri = multiple meanings. Most likely here are either to spin/twirl (as in chichikurau) or round.) And then many panels later this is repeated, then fuchi wo kurichiri (no idea, but given the nature of the scene, I'm not sure I'm meant to), then finally as chichi wo furikuri. which is... maybe a further play on words, but one which goes over my head. It may also be worth noting that kuri is also short for kuritorisu, which is.... well, try saying it, bearing in mind how r/l are rather the same. (furifuri, incidentally, is frilly/fluttery, so furikuri...) Or maybe the meaning becomes clearer later. Assuming anything becomes clearer later. |

I like to see it as Gainax sticking two fingers up at the format after making a masterpiece like Evangelion. Hence the meta jokes, like when everything turns to manga and it cuts out as they run out of budget (literally because the studio ran out of budget to do those sort of artwork intensive scenes), and Kamon's obsession with mecha (specifically EVA). I got the blu-ray of Oooonnneee-Pawwwwwwwnchhh *electric guitar*... I mean One Punch Man the other week. (god that theme tune is awesome) It's soo good. First anime I've seen in years. It's amazing. I love how it's one of the best animated things I have ever seen (seriously, it's jaw-dropping) but it plays with the animation style all the time. (For example Saitama is drawn very simply, almost featureless most of the time.) I think you need to have seen some anime to get what it's really going for (a few episodes of Dragonball Z will do). But yeah, amazing. |
