I tried minecraft with full movement in VR and I nearly chucked my guts up in seconds. It didn't help that it was through a fudged up Rift Simulator type thing with the Google cardboard and there was a lot of lag, though.

I had very minor feelings of general 'weirdness' when first playing Robinson but those disappeared pretty quickly and the RE7 and Bound demos never gave me any gyp at all even when playing with all nausea controls turned off. Admittedly all of this aside from a couple of initial hours with Robinson were played on my Pro so I'm not entirely ruling out the possibility that it's pumping out slightly higher frame rates (or somehow smoothing things out in another way) and that's why this all seemed to clear up around that time. I don't know how likely that is mind.

Yeah, any kind of lag will really fuck you up; that's not going to be a good test of how you'd fare with a proper setup.

Minecraft VR is vomit-inducing on all platforms. They've got it badly wrong.

I've seen that the Gear VR version has a mode which simulates you playing on a large 3D display in a living room. Is that present in other versions?

That's the default behaviour for playing all normal PS4 games in PSVR. It's a bit rubbish though, I don't know that you'd use it for anything when you have a perfectly good telly right there.

I watched a film on Plex while lying on my back on the sofa. It was very comfy.

I might take my Daydream on my next international flight. Mobile VR seems like a good way to watch a video on a plane.

My technohat is on the other side of the room.

3D, presumably? Or you might have a tiny telly. Can't think why you'd have a tiny telly and a PSVR setup though.

Nah, you want a VR flight sim so you can pretend to be flying the thing.

It was "very comfy" but not comfy enough to justify walking eight feet? I see. Maybe you are conceding my point that this isn't very compelling.

PSVR does have support for 3d Blurays now. I was excited to try it until I realised I don't have any 3D blurays. I don't know if it works with ripped video via any of the things like Plex, but I doubt it.

Quite. I guess you could be gaming while someone else in your house uses the TV, that's not nothing.

Literally two seconds of movement in Minecraft VR and I'm desperate to chuck my guts up.

Not really. It's not compelling enough to overcome my laziness. I'm sure you can see how it could still be very compelling in that scenario.

Seems like if you were really that lazy, you'd never have put your technohat away on the other side of the room.

I've got a couple of Marvel films on 3D Bluray that I'll try and remember to bring with me to the BBQ (assuming you're coming)?

You can also play ripped films if they're in a specific format; I tried it for porn for, um, science and it worked well enough. There's an app for the PS4 called LittlStar that's basically a movie player and if you feed it side-by-side video files, with some caveats, and it'll play them in 3D through the headset. Some details of the formatting and whatnot to adhere to here:

That's very kind of you but unfortunately I can't make it.

I have at least one ripped side-by-side 3D film lying around, which I used to test my TV's 3D support. So with your information there's nothing stopping me from getting this working other than the fact I might not care enough to actually do it ;)

The price for a Rift headset and two of the Touch controller has been temporarily dropped to £400, which is quite a deal:

From a selfish perspective this worries me slightly. I want VR games; good VR games. Devices like this are never going to be able to touch 'tethered' VR tech in terms of capability so I worry that this form factor would leech investment and development away from the stuff I care about. It makes perfect sense for companies like Facebook to go after yer man in the street--because that's where the money is of course--but it could smother 'proper' gaming VR in it's crib.

I dunno, I think that if it works even reasonably well then it might only swell the market for more high end VR stuff. Once people get into something then lots of them will be willing to fork out for a better version.

Last night I "was" the Batman, although annoyingly it felt the need to have its own calibration that decided I was too short to "be" the Batman, and had to move the camera. It also seems to override the default calibration, so when I found myself facing at 90 degrees to my actual character, the doesn't seem to be an option to recenter and I had to force close it.

The ending is head (and the rest)-fuckingly brilliant though.

I made the mistake of playing the Here They Lie demo before it though, and the movement made my stomach go all over the place, so that's out.

Superhot is out this week. Pre-orders are 20% off; £16 for the 2d version, £16 for the VR version, or £27 for both together (they are different games with different levels and stuff.) I know GazChap speaks highly of it in VR.

Yep, it's fantastic - although I've not really played it since completing it (even though since then they've released a "forever update" which adds endless mode etc.)

That didn't work for me, it just took me to the special batman calibration which insisted I should be facing to the left.

Really? It should be an override on everything if you're using the headset. You have to properly hold it down though.

It definitely works, I've done it loads of times for people when they've been on the headset with the Move controllers and I've been 'supervising' with the pad in my hand.

ETA: I looked it up and I suspect you've been using the wrong button. The official support page mentions that the in-game calibration can be re-run at any time if you hold down the Start button, but you want the Options button for the global level recentre command.

Ah, I'd kind of assumed that start acted the same as option (I thought I'd used the start button to re-centre in other games).
I definitely got GJ to pass me a pad, as I was aware that, strictly, I wasn't holding option, but start, and didn't think I'd had any luck with that either, but maybe I'd already given up by that point.

Yeah, I mean if you're going to use the strict definition it's fair to say that one button probably isn't actually a completely different one. Y'know, if you wanted to be all pedantic about it. ;)

The buttons on the Move controllers are just such a pain in the arse I don't bother with them. The trigger and Move button themselves are fine of course but the others are just horrible. Any time I try to use the face buttons I always get the wrong one (I'm looking at you I Expect You to Die) and the Start Select/Options buttons I can just never find. The movement sensing stuff is fine but the button layout is a pretty shite design all in.

Batman deals with this quite nicely at the beginning by drawing the controllers for you.

I don't think I meant thumb button. I probably press it with my finger.

I'm really confused now, if I hold down Options, on the pad, then it just takes me into the Batman calibration, it doesn't re-centre the display.

That's not much of a defence; regardless of how you're playing a game, if you need to look at the controller to work out where the buttons are it's a bad experience.

So just to be clear: you're getting the same behaviour from holding down the Start or Options button on the pad?

It's the select button on the Technodicks (Move controllers).

[edit] Sorry, I'm not paying attention.

On the pad, I think you have to tap options to recenter. Holding it down a bit gets you the calibration.

I think.

Just in case it helps, if you press the PlayStation button when in VR there should be an option on the quick menu that pops up labelled [Adjust PlayStation VR] that might also let you recentre the view properly. Obviously that's less convenient than just holding a button down but better than nothing I suppose.

Nope, on pad it's definitely hold down to recalibrate
