No, he'll hate it because it's pap.

The want is high with this one....

However, I already have an Android box running all of this stuff but the box does appeal to me as they've kept it almost original it would seem.

Problem is this would likely end up like my Big Trak, stuffed under the stairs after playing with it for about two days.

I dunno, we'll see. Would be nice if they followed it up with a SNES and possibly an N64 though.

You can't, even slightly. You'd have to be a lunatic to argue that the difference in appeal between 80s games and 2010 games is remotely comparable to just increasing the resolution on a film. And I have no idea where you're even trying to go with books.

No, because he's not used to anything that's discernibly different in film quality. A film released last year isn't comparatively different in film quality as the Nintendo classic mini is to a PS4, or an iPad.

I interpreted that as kids won't dislike something just because it's "old".

E.g. my kids bloody love the 60s batman film

I think they're less likely to notice e.g. that the resolution is crap or the graphics don't look right, or whatever.

Admittedly mine are 6 and 4... this may change in 10 years time.

No, but (and being absolutely no expert in kids, obv) Older games are significantly lesser in every department. If it wasn't for those of us who have sentimental attachment to older games, I'd imagine we'd all think they were awful given what we have to compare them to, barring the odd one or two gems.

No, I never said in any way that kids will dislike something just because it is old... But there's, I think, a difference between a classic old story, a classic old film, and a classic old game. Technology in one of these areas has advanced so much that I'm not sure that it is so easily looked over if you've been brought up expecting a certain finesse to graphics, etc. there will always be some exceptions because kids aren't universally full of the same expectations, but I know that some kids find very bad early CGI jarring as they are used to something more believable.

I've noticed my kids like the games with simple control schemes over complex '3D' ones. Graphics do play a part but along as they don't look 'Spekky' levels of shit and have a pleasant enough chip tune playing along I think mine would like them.

Certainly some games have aged better than others. From the list of games for the Nintendo Mini thing, I wouldn't fancy playing the old Zeldas and Castlevanias again. But stuff like Super Mario Bros 3 and Bubble Bobble (if it's as good as the Master System version anyway) would hopefully still entertain kids now.

I think some NES games are somewhat timeless, Mario 3 definitely holds up really well. A lot of them I think you have to at least have some nostalgia for the era to get into. That's just a guess though, maybe kids would like them.

SNES graphics and design hold up a lot better in my view. PS1 stuff is pretty rough too, but N64 might hold up better.

I'm just accurately describing it's limitations. Obviously if someone doesn't care about those limitations then by all means get this and have fun with it.

If someone does care about those limitations, they should consider one of the alternatives that doesn't have the same limitations.

Not sure why you think that's being "negative".

Depends a bit on the genre...

My son:
-Old arcade games, my son quite likes to play them (maybe because they are a bit like iphone games?)
- Early 3D.. was crap in retrospect probably.. isn't interested
- sensible soccer... Used to fifa 16 now... (even though we have some 16 year olds participating at the world cup next month btw)
- railroad tycoon etc.. . Graphics don;t matter one bit...
- with kids here there is now a popular rollercoaster tycoon 3 (2006?) channel, as long as the youtuber doing it is repsectable, the game is too apparantly,,,,, (rollercoaster tycoon for the ipad is awful that may help too)

My daughter
- really loved monument valley....
- she plays minecraft because her brother does
- and we are making trips now outside..
- generally she likes portable games, and doesn't really care about the graphics.. (tomodashi)

Edit: tangentially related to this, this morning during my usual routine of checking all the online retailers for good deals, I spotted that in Amazon's warehouse section they had a factory sealed Gameboy Colour. They stopped manufacturing these in 2003, so who knows why it's just been sat in a warehouse all that time. It was only £50, and my preliminary research suggests they currently go for upward of £150, so I bought it. I might just sit on it to see how its value goes up over time, or might flog it immediately for some instant free money. Pretty bizarre!

Amazon call it "blue", but I think Nintendo actually called it teal.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!

Edit: Oh shit! Just had another look at the warehouse section. They had a factory sealed copy of Mario 64 for £30! They go for over £200 on ebay.

I ordered the Nes Mini back when it was first announced by Nintendo from The Game Collection.

I've just had an email saying that they've had to cancel my order as they can't take payments for transactions booked before a certain date. Oh, also.. Because of demand they've had to raise the price to £99.something.

I was about to get really annoyed but then I read on.

Because of the inconvenience they have provided me with a code which will get me back in the queue for the console at the original price.

I do like a story with a happy ending. I shall let you know if it arrives!

I did not know that. I did have a play with an Ouya once and it was ok apart from the massive controller lag. I understand they fixed that in later revisions but I'm sure the NES mini will be fine.

Ebay has quite a few (ranging from £100-£200), which I suppose was inevitable. 'Opportunists' is the polite word for them I guess. :)

It seems that Nintendo have stopped production on this to concentrate all their efforts on the Switch.

But then I've seen a rumour this morning that the SNES mini is on the way. This should come as no surprise as I've been seeing the rumours ever since the NES mini was announced. Anyway, if it does go ahead I would heartily recommend ordering one. The NES mini is fetching silly second hand prices so if you want one.. order one.

Have you modified your NES mini to put extra games on it or are you keeping it as is?

I'm keeping it as is. I have a modded Wii connected to my telly that can play any NES game and can also use the NES mini controller so there's no point really.

I'd like to keep the NES Mini in original condition. One day, it'll be worth a fortune and when I'm long gone... my kids will be able to throw it in a skip for me.

There's no way that this is worth £180 but CEX seem to disagree.

Someone is selling knock-offs of these in Boscombe market for £40. Very tempted as they come with two controllers and 600 games…

That's genius. I assume it's an older model Pi inside, as £40 is pushing the margin of profit a bit

I've seen several YouTube videos of these and I would approach with caution. If they're the same models, the 600 games are full of knock offs and duplicated games. Still, for £40 I'm sure you could have some fun with one.

Yeah, the emulation can be incredibly variable. You’ve got a big old PC at home I’m sure you could do better with that than waste £40.
