I just heard the worst song on the radio. It was absolute pap, but the worst thing was the pronunciation of centrifugal as 'centriviggle'.

Could it have been centripetal?

I don't think so, but I'll see if I can google the couple of lines that kept repeating to try and find the song and lyrics.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 47

Yes, that was exactly it. Did you Google that or just *know* it?

If the latter... You need to go and sit in a darkened room and fhink about the kind of person you are.

It's the way you love me
It's a feeling like this
It's centrifugal motion
It's perpetual bliss
It's that pivotal moment
It's, ah, unthinkable
This kiss, this kiss (unsinkable)
This kiss, this kiss

Aren't centrifugal and centripetal forces opposite, ie centripetal force moves things towards the centre and centrifugal moves things away from the centre.

I'm not sure centrifugal OR centripetal "motion" means anything. Force or acceleration maybe, but not motion. Frankly, I'm not sure Faith Hill knows very much about Classical Mechanics at all.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 47

I failed my A-level mechanics exams so many times. It was modular, and there were three mechanics modules, two Pure Maths and one stats module. My Pure and Stats results dragged up my result to a C, but the mechanics modules were pure crap.

If you've got a hollow tube with a rubber ball inside it attached by a spring at both ends to the inside ends of the tube and this tube falls off a round table rotating at 3m/s that is 0.8 metres above the ground what is the resulting distance the ball will bounce up the wall.

I was able to get one point on each and every question by 'resolving the forces', and then I waited for the minimum time limit to expire so I could walk out and cry at how my brain wouldn't learn enough to pass this stupid module.

Well, I doubt she means to suggest the feeling that she and her lover are being pulled away from each other. She probably means centripetal (or maybe perpetual).

Hmm, in that case maybe electrostatic forces might have provided a better set of metaphors, rather than circular motion. Faith - I'm available for songwriting consultancy. Rates negotiable.

Maybe she means that it will expand, like multiple objects being cast a wider circle by the centriviggle force.

Maybe there actually is a centriviggle force, and the joke is on us.

There was a great segment on a recent episode of Radio 4's 'More or Less' discussing how some love song containing the line 'tomorrow I'll love you twice as much as I do today' is really not very romantic when you do the sums.

There was probably some other stuff in there about the breaking point of each spring being 1 newton or something. Or I've combined two questions. Or mechanics is dumb unless you want to be an engineer and why the hell is it in my maths exam.

So that is centrifugal, isn't it? Assuming this is right:

I... Um... No?

Author:  Mimi [ Thu Sep 01, 2016 10:26 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 47

Myp, you are right in that centripetal is towards the centre, centrifugal is away from the centre of rotation.

But Grim... is right in that it would seem odd to suggest the centrifugal force is like love between two people as it moves things say from the central point. If your lover were at the centre, centrifugal force would pull you away from them.

If you and your lover were both at the centre then centrifugal force could be imagined to be casting the circle of your love wide around, but that would be a tenuous analogy at best.

Author:  myp [ Thu Sep 01, 2016 10:29 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 47

I assumed you and your lover were the centre of your world, with the centrifugal force in the song taking you away from each other.
