Why's that?

So there was a time when whatever.local would never publicly exist. So that was okay. You could use servername.local in the full knowledge that it would only ever stay internal to your network.

Then they pretty much derestricted top level DNS domains. So I can go ahead and buy a load of .local domains. Next time your users go to some .local address are they staying on your network or not? Depends how good your DNS guy is. We're going to go ahead and find out.

Every week or so, a guy comes and restocks the box and he's relying on people being honest enough to pay for the food in there.... The director clearly isn't being honest!

Good question. I don't think so. The guy who comes in to replace it every week counts the money that's left in there which pays for the food. I imagine this guy does leaves boxes of snacks in every office around here.
