I am both irritated when it goes back when I'm trying to delete something, and irritated that it no longer goes back when I'm not. I'm a UI designer's dream.

Same here. I was hoping they might have added a setting for it or one of the hidden flags in chrome://flags but from what I've seen, there are no plans for that and they'd rather people used extensions if they really want the functionality.

Bang this into an extension and I think you're good to go. Not tested in any way so it might well set your house on fire or something.
Code:
Document.body.onkeydown = function() {
    var key = event.keyCode || event.charCode;
    if((key == 8 || key == 46) && "body" === document.activeElement)
        window.history.back();
};

My Chromebook has started nagging me with messages that the lock combination of SEARCH+L isn't going to work anymore and I need to use a different combination. However, SEARCH+L still works in the meantime so of course I haven't been using the new combination or even committed it to memory.

It seems like such a bizarre, random thing to change.

Removing a shortcut that has been around for decades... Is an interesting choice.

Still, as I never liked chrome, it's not an issue for me.

Firefox still allows it, but if you look at images on imgur.com the backspace-to-go-back shortcut no longer works.

I don't agree with Chrome removing the shortcut, but it's their choice. What I really fucking hate is when webmasters override keyboard shortcuts for their own ends. See also: php.net and using the / as a shortcut to their Find box, over-riding Firefox's "find on page" functionality. Hnnnnnngh.

Also outlook deciding that CTRL-F 'find' should actually be 'forward'.

The Beex keyboard shortcuts are really good (and never used)!

Fortunately, there's some comments on the JS file, or I wouldn't remember them either.

I don't mind those quite so much as they are unlikely to conflict with browser shortcuts ;)

Like some of the links (but not all) on the BBC News site. I always use middle-click to open them in a new tab, but some override this behaviour and open it in the same tab. Minor annoyance, but an unnecessary one.

I expect they have very solid data that many more people do it by accident than do it on purpose.

I suspect you only use backspace for back these days if you started using browsers back in the Netscape days, and we're a minority of internet users now. If you think about it, it's a terrible shortcut. It isn't semantically correct at all (why does deleting text equate to going back to the last page?), it's not very ergonomic (most people are right handed, so have their right hand on the mouse while browsing, so a shortcut on the right side of the keyboard isn't very comfortable) and the consequences of accidentally pressing it when the focus isn't where you think it is are bad (you go back and potentially lose text you entered when trying to delete some text.)

I think this is a good change, personally.

Macs do have a left facing arrow, though. But I maintain (keycap aside) that there's no meaningful semantic similarity between what going back does and what backspace does.

Move the cursor back, move the page back, is about as close as I can get. Or the word 'back' or something.

Mine has an arrow.

My HP laptop has an arrow on the backspace.. I have never used it to go back a page.

Mine has an arrow and the word backspace.

I always wondered if it was used because you're effectively going back one space in your browsing history. Tenuous, I know.
