Had an interview on Tuesday, confirming that I don't tick enough boxes to be considered for the single remaining post when our team is finally disbanded and we're all made redundant at the end of April. So that's a 'nay.'

Today I heard that I was the successful applicant for a new engineering job that's being created that I interviewed for last week, so I should transfer to that at the beginning of May, so that's a 'yay.' Unfortunately, the bonus on the engineering job is significantly less than on my current job, so the 'nays' win 2 to 1.

What's a bonus?

"A sum of money added to a person's wages as a reward for good performance."

I suspect you knew that, but it doesn't feature as part of your compensation package. In my case, it adds to my basic living wage to take me to an amount I can just about manage on.

Christ, that's a bit shit warhead. Any scope for moving elsewhere?

Post subject:  Re: The 'Nay!' but 'Yay!' Thread

I can apply for other jobs within the company, provided I have the required skills, but most of them require technical skills and knowledge that I don't have. Or I can apply for jobs elsewhere, but I think I tend to underestimate my employability. And another major factor is my age. I know I don't have to declare that on job applications, but if I get as far as an interview it's obvious that retirement age is not many years away.

The positive thing for me at the moment is that I won't be unemployed and I can still look for better paid work elsewhere while I have this breathing space.

There is one other slim possibility, which is that it may become apparent in the next few weeks that they need to retain two posts from our defunct team. M'colleague, who has landed the one remaining post (that he's currently doing anyway), reckons it will be way too much work for him alone. Considering that the company originally said there wouldn't need to be anyone working on that residual work and then realised they were wrong, it's just possible that when they start looking at the volume of work I could end up staying where I am. All the planning so far seems to have been a 'back of a fag packet' affair.

Don't see age as a negative. It can bring an employer lots of experience which can also be passed on to other employees who may stay when you have gone. :)

Well, my latest painting didn't sell at The Grundy Art Fayre. :(

But to be honest it was something I did to hang at home before seeing the exhibition was coming up and to be honest if it sold for what I put it up for I'd have been getting less than minimum wage for it really. :D

Can you post a picture of it? Always interested to see peoples paintings as I can't paint for shit :)

Nay for me is that large night in Soho eating and drinking with brother and cousins has been cancelled, my son is sick and needs Dr and my wife at 35 weeks pregnant is also ill and can't cope on her own. Tonight was supposed be last large night for a while due to 2nd child arriving

Yay is it would have cost a fortune with the usual drunken casino visit added onto pricey drinks and food, also was staying with my brother which would have meant I'd be home around 1pm tomorrow feeling like shit.

Disappointed but its the best thing to be doing under the circumstances

More of a Yay, then nay, but yay!

Spent the morning watching Moana, with my wife and all 4 kids, followed by pizza hut for lunch. (That's the yay bit) then on the way home, on the dual carriageway, at 70+ mph whilst changing lanes our rear left tyre blew! Still, safely home now, need a new wheel, but no more damage done!

Although Hollywood will tell you otherwise, a tyre blowing rarely causes any trouble, unless you're in the middle of cornering hard or something.

Mostly it's more of an "oh" moment.

I concur. I've had a front tyre blow out on me on the motorway. It didn't substantially alter the balance of the car, just made the steering wobble very slightly and obviously it's noisier.

It was a little scary, I felt like a metronome, as we were changing lanes about to overtake something, and then swerved back in when Pauline (who was driving) realised something was wrong, then mild panic from the realisation that we did have a puncture. Then a really upset 8 year old, who thought we might be stuck there for ever. Still, it could have been much worse, no one was hurt, the minibus was fine (other than needing a new wheel) and the weather was fair. Hence the yay, nay, yay nature.

Removed everything from Top Lawn Bed One this morning in preparation for putting the summer flowers in. Took a while, but i am a bit lazy with it. Anyway, wild garlic hasn't returned too much, so the birds can have a good feed and this week I will replant.

The gardener said we should remove the holly bush completely, so I spent a while stripping that back to the trunk before realising I don't pay her to advise.

Post subject:  Re: The 'Nay!' but 'Yay!' Thread

After Dad's little adventure in hospital last week, I decided I owed it to myself to look after myself a little more. To that end, I booked a dentist's appointment for the first time in years (on the form I filled in, I put 10+ years, but I really have no idea.. could be 15). Although the pain from the TMD I had has more or less gone, things didn't feel right, so I knew something was going to have to be done. I'd lost a couple of fillings last year and when they came out, they took part of the tooth with them, so I figured worse case scenario would be a couple of extractions and some fillings. Obviously not ideal, but all my own fault for neglecting things for so long.

Had the appointment this morning and my suspicions were confirmed - need two teeth out and four fillings, to be done early next month. That's the 'Nay', but the mini 'Yay' was the fact that I'm finally getting it sorted. I'm horrendous for putting stuff off and burying my head in the sand, so today was anxious, but I'm glad I went.

The best thing I've ever done in terms of dental 'self care' is switching to an electric toothbrush. I've gone from getting fillings embarrassingly often to not a single one since I made the switch a few years ago. The actual movement of the brush head is of benefit I'm sure, but for me I think it more comes down to the fact that you're slower and more deliberate with your movements so end up being much more thorough. Also the typically small brush head of these things lets you get into all the parts of your mouth. The difference with it for me has been incredible.

Agreed. I wish I'd made the switch sooner. I'd looked upon them as an unnecessary luxury item, but they're not that expensive now and they're not as harsh on my gums as a regular toothbrush.
