Nah. She was more worried about the violence (we watched Cap2 on Saturday in preparation and a rather surprising number of people get shot in the face), but Cap3 wasn't too bad.

"You have the right to remain silent!"

Something else I noticed - in the Iron Man films Stark always mistook Stan Lee for someone else - in this film Stan got his name wrong. Also Dean Pelton from Community was Dean of MIT.

Martin Freeman's minor role was pretty weird but I looked up his character and I guess he is going to be in the upcoming Black Panther movie.

I've just bought the entire phase 2 of Blu-rays from Amazon for £48. They're doing a 2 for £16 offer at the moment.

I was waiting for a box set like they did with the first phase, but it never arrived. The expensive limited editions notwithstanding.

I laughed at the Dean thing.

Spider-Man was great. The line you quoted made me laugh, as did almost everything he said and did. The fight with Giant Man was brilliant, as was the earlier bit, with, "Sorry. I thought it was a water truck", which made me laugh for a solid ten seconds.

I liked that Spidey was nerding out for most of the fight. "Are those wings carbon fiber?"

Oh Christ, and "That thing does not obey the laws of physics at all!"

But "You have the right to remain silent!" was the best one.

I loved the Spider-Man dialogue, but he did look very much like CGI, more than anything else in these movies.

I also wasn't convinced by him as Peter Parker, but he felt kind of shoehorned in and not given much screentime, so I'll reserve judgement for his standalone movie.

I thought he was really, really good. And the CGI didn't bother me really. Iron Man and War Machine looked just as much CGI to me.

All superb, as was the conscience one. Ant Man fit into the film surprisingly well.

Also funny, Falcon's "Bird suit?", and the look he and Bucky gave Cap post-kiss.

Isn't the magic shield physics waved away in the comics "because vibranium"?

In some ways that's true but it was also quite refreshing to have a character's entire introduction blown through in five minutes rather than the usual lengthy origins story. They managed to give you most everything you needed to know in situ and while it was slightly clunky I think it generally worked.

Pretty much, though from a quick scan of the relevant Wiki page it seems that it can claim to be a completely unique mixture of vibranium, adamantium and Uru because comics.

Yeah I don't really think going over the entire origin is required again, although a succinct montage at the start of the movie would be a smart move at least, but I just want to see what they are doing differently with this iteration of the character, and give him a bit of room to breathe. It's not really about needing to retread old ground, but we need a little more of an introduction to this iteration of Spider-Man. The story of his first big confrontation with a super-villain has just as much scope for this as an origin story. I guess I want to see him learning the ropes at least, which was obviously something that they were aiming for in Civil War.

I certainly wouldn't say it was much worse than "slightly clunky", perhaps the Peter Parker dialogue was showed up a little by how well they did the Spider-Man dialogue.

Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

One of the biggest contrasts for me in BvS vs Civil War was the way they dealt with the origin stories of Batman and Spider-Man. I was close to actually screaming at the screen in BvS as we saw it yet again, in not even vaguely actually dramatic slow motion.

Plus stuff in Marvel is allowed to happen during hours of daylight.

Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

After seeing someone on the SA forums refer to BvS as "Beavis", I cannot refer to it as anything else now.

Also, in Civil War, do they state that Black Panther's suit is made out of vibranium at any point? Seems a bit odd that people (Cap and Stark especially) fight him knowing full well that his suit can absorb their blows.

Very briefly, I think. Maybe when his claws scratch Cap's shield IIRC.

Yeah - I'm fairly sure Iron Man says "Vibranium suit?"

Oh fuck no. The last think I would ever need to see is another superhero learning the fucking ropes. Christ. They all fell in a cave, with like bats or spiders or whatever. Cool. And they spend some time not being awesome at stuff. Okay, whatever, dull, move on.

I'm pretty sure the new spider-man is going to be an oranges one. In Civil War when Iron Man asks him where he got his powers, he replies it's a long story or something along those lines. So I'm pretty sure they don't want to give plot lines away, so maybe it might be different from being bit by a spider again.

Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

Maybe this time he bit the spider.

They established that he has mechanical web shooters of his own design, right?

I guess they could be doing something like the thing from Ultimate Spider-Man (that I only know from the cartoon) where he is being trained by Nick Fury and Shield to step up from dealing with petty crime and burglaries to taking on New York's scariest super villains. But maybe with Tony Stark and Stark Enterprises instead.

Every time i tried to watch a Superhero hero movie i felt like if i was listening to a 30 minute grindcore song. They are just way too fatiguing. Wake me up when they make such noisy and over-edited films which last only 90 minutes. It's strange because it seems the whole universe likes them though.

The only one I thoroughly liked was kick-ass.

I'd taken it to be a description of the character rather than some future film i.e. I've drunkenly taken that too literally by far. My apologies.

Really enjoyed that, though less so towards the end. It felt like a slightly more grown up reason for a civil war than the comics (though written down it doesn't sound it - in the films it's just personal, really, which sounds a bit naff). Good humour, and I really liked Spidey, though his voice and general wonderment was great. Martin Freeman (in common with most people) shouldn't be doing that accent, though. I can understand him wanting to, might open the door to big career things, but the people making films ought to have more judgement. If an accent is only 'good enough' then it's probably shit and unconvincing.

I finally watched Captain America: Cybil Shepherd, and it may be because I can' t stand Cap as a character, I felt he was wrong. Completely and unreservedly. Bucky is completely unsympathetic.

It doesn't help that the coolest superheroes were on Tony's side. As well as the best characters. Ant-man was good though. I'll actually have to watch his film now.

Liked Spidey. Seemed to be the closest to the comics we've seen on film.

Sam Wilson is a non-entity as a character. Get rid.

Hate Scarlet Witch. Never got why they decided to use her as she's an X-men character anyway. Would rather have Squirrel Girl.

Panther was ace.

All in all, alright. The action sequences were pretty good. (Though suffer from the problem of 'you just met the guy, how the fuck do you know that wouldn't kill him' quite a lot. Particularly Scarlet Witch slamming people in to things and Cap dropping a couple of tonnes on a 15 year old kid who at that point could just be super-agile and squished flat)

So, Doctor Strange was very beautiful, but not overly good, IMO. It wasn't as funny as some of the other Marvel films, and there was no real tension.

The magic was cool, though, and it was pretty awesome when the Ancient One let loose and started kicking ass. And Strange's cloak was fucking sweet!

I also liked the credits bit with Thor in. Magical beer!

Also, the Thor / Strange / Loki team-up is going to be quite the thing.

Finally: was he always American?

Hurrah, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 didn't suck!

There were some property lol-worthy moments, especially Mary Poppins and The Hoff.

I wasn't entirely sure about Ego, though. You can't fight a planet with pistols, you just can't.

The opening scene with Groot running around was ace, as was anything with Drax in.

I'm not sure why Groot was so stupid, though.

Very good / 10

Author:  Curiosity [ Sat May 06, 2017 21:09 ]
Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

Groot is, essentially, a small child. So he doesn't understand things so well.

I thought fighting Ego was okay. They tried guns and got absolutely slaughtered. Only managed to delay him when Peter went all GODMODE on him.

What annoyed/annoys me is Yondu and his silly arrow. I actually think the arrow is cool, but for it to work it need hardened killers to stand still for about thirty seconds while he gets it to do a nice round trip to get everyone. It was daft in the first one, but he killed largely stupid drones. To them take out at least vaguely competent people just seems a bit stupid.

But, equally, it's a Marvel movie in space where the hero is half-god/planet, so I should stop moaning.

I took the 6 year old to see it. She loved the movie, but took the death at the end very, very badly!

Didn't they basically address that with the scene where everything was done in slow motion? The implication was that the arrow was doing everything just so quickly that no one had time to react. Granted that is a slight retcon of what we've seen before but it wasn't too jarring I didn't think.
