Hello tech spods computer whizzes, I've been asked to improve the training records kept for the staff at work (we are around 40 employees).

This is something quite new to me. I had a very early crack at moving from the previous paper records to a spreadsheet version. It did the job for about 18 months but it's really creaky and I only ever saw it as a short term fix, which it was, kinda. Now I need to look for a proper system. I believe the term is a Learning Management System.

- Track staff training progress (courses attended, hands on practical training, protocols read, space for notes/feedback/competency assessments) with dates
- Ability to run reports (eg per trainnig module for all staff, compiled details for individual staff, maybe generate a training 'matrix'
- Runs on Mac
- Simple interface, easy to manage
- Perhaps with some ability to deliver content (eg slides, with a quiz/test at the end).

If this sounds a little vague, well... it is, sorry.

I really don't have any experience with this, it's not my background at all and I'm a little out on my own here - none of my regular day to day contacts have ant experience with it either. Have you used a nice system before? Have you used a crappy one?

PeopleHR does this, as part of a much bigger package. But it may fit your needs (you don't have to use it all, after all).

Thanks Grim... I'll have a look at that. I typed 'LMS' into google but that's probably not the best way to start, hence my asking here.

I suppose it's worth pointing out that this facility (around 40 staff) is a subsidiary of a much larger (medical research) facility of around 650 staff.

We share HR and health&safety (WHS) resources with the big facility (or more accurately we use theirs). As a result, things are already a little fragmented - the payroll & leave system is separate to the yearly 'appraisal' system. There's a WHS system for reading risk assessments, then there is another system for WHS inductions and quizzes, plus a host of other HR related paper and web-based forms.... then I am trying to deal with the training records, only for my little-ish group, likely as yet another separate entity.

Oh, and did I say it needs to be good AND cheap? i no rite >:(

At least I stood my ground and resisted my boss trying to get me to just 'knock something up in filemaker or something'

It's more academic focused, but it very open source and adaptable.

We have some sort of Thomson Reuters thing, but that might be suited more to large companies.

Thanks all for your suggestions, I do appreciate it. I'll have a look at Moodle - I've heard of that one, some of our staff do distance learning through TAFE (it's like college) and they login in through a Moodle portal or something.
