Have you tried the 'block' thing that the controllers connect to ?

That basically is around the size of a 360 controller and I much prefer that to having them separate

I did, but that was the day after I had bad cramp, and so not a good representation

I'm looking at https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0787SDS38/

Looks like the left analog stick will be too far away to be comfy using those. Get a pro controller instead?

Or the Hori. I find that quite comfortable and they're pretty cheap.

I've been really pleased with it so far. The only minor downside for me is that with it being a wired controller, you can't turn the console on with it, but I can live with that.

Unfortunately, the controllers ae frightfully unergonomic, be it attached to the screen, with the minature slidey things or the larger controller unit.

Thanks, just ordered one. I managed to drop one of my joycons into a cup of coffee so some of the buttons keep sticking and it's slightly irritating.

There's some solutions to that:

a) Buy a Switch Pro Controller

b) Buy a controller adapter like the Mayflash Magic-NS, this will allow you to instead use controllers from other consoles with the Switch

In fairness, it's kind of shit that a controller for a console is ergonomically bad in this day and age. Having to adopt Third party work arounds isn't great.

Hell, it's arguably even worse to have to buy a first party solution because then they're benefiting from their own bad design.

In fairness, it’s hard to imagine how the JoyCons could be much more ergonomic and still be portable. And the shell thing that turns them into a pad is fine. It’s a lot more comfortable than any classic (say, pre-Dreamcast) pad was.

I've never touched it so I don't know either way, but if someone is pained by your controller then surely that's bad? Everything else you've said there sounds like an excuse.

We all have different sized hands and some have physical problems with their hands for various reasons (arthritis, injury, RSI-related problems, and so on), therefore it's not possible for one controller to suit everybody. For example, I get on just fine with the Joy-Cons cut find the Pro Controller to be uncomfortable and painful to use after a while. Other people find the complete opposite. Equally some don't get on at all well with the Xbox One controller but love the PS4 controller, and vice versa. And so on with every controller that has ever existed.

At least with the various controller adapters that are on the market we all have the option to use whatever controller suits us best.

Not so, they're offering people a choice. It's impossible to please everyone with just one type of controller.

I have no problem with the joycons or any of the joycon attachments, but struggle with e.g. xbox controllers after a while because I find them too bulky.

I get RSI just looking at the joycons.

I'm waiting till they make a home console version that comes with a pro controller.

I just noticed now, after more thinking about buying the switch someday, that the joycon doesn't have a proper d-pad. WTF?? This makes no sense. I'm mostly into retro platformers, and now my interest in the console is almost 0. Was it really hard to have a d-pad instead of those buttons with arrows?

It's possible to buy third party shells that also have a proper D-pad. Such as this:

https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/D-PAD-Ve ... 36174.html

Naturally you'll void your warranty if fitting such a shell.

I had this concern but after using it, it's not really a problem. The buttons can still be used like a D pad and it's not as cumbersome as it looks.

It also depends on how each game detects the analogue dead zones. Some 2d games with digital controls work fine with analogue sticks (e.g. hollow knight), but most don't.

First thoughts:

It's so effin' cute. Love the joy cons, love it in both handheld and tabletop mode. Haven't tried it with a TV yet as there isn't one in the house yet. It's both bigger and smaller than I expected, which isn't possible I guess, but it is.

Slight niggles: the wrist straps are very tricky to get off once you've put them on, and the release buttons don't actually do anything to assist in this mode. You just have to make sure they're unlocked and pull hard, which I didn't want to do in case I broke them.

Also I understand why the charging port is on the bottom, but it makes playing in tabletop mode while charging impossible.

Mario is pretty joyous so far. Apart from that, Zelda, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart, what should I be looking out for. I see NBA Playgrounds is 50% off at the moment, any good? Can I justify triple-dipping on Rocket League?

Is anyone going to pay £20 a year to play online?

We raced to completion! Nothing about moving in. I completed way before Joans and he's just sad he can't complete yet.

Ahahah.

I didn't even bother setting up an online account on my switch, such is the general patheticness of Nintendos online offering.

They haven't announced any details but from what I remember, there were rumours of Nintendo giving you old games to play while you were subscribed to their online service. I'm a sucker for Nintendo too so of course I'll pay!

From the games you mentioned, Zelda is a must buy to start you off. It's glorious.

I guess you need them for some two player games as it gives you extra shoulder buttons.

Sorry, I thought you literally meant the strap that goes on your wrist, rather than the buttons themselves (which I do use, but without putting my wrist in the thingy)

I can see how it would be confusing - the whole device is called the joy con wrist strap.
