Don't we need to have a "cottages" discussion?

Cottages discussion:

We're very close to the person limit for one cottage.

Getting the second cottage makes the person limit go away (barring a thoroughly unexpected stampede for places). This means all couples get a double room (probably), and they don't get an interloper in with them!

Getting the second cottage increases the cost per person. Depending on numbers and the deal I can get with the cottage chap, this could be from 20-50 quid per person.

I appreciate that the upper end of that scale is a lot in percentage increase terms, and would be prohibitive for some people, which would personally be my priority to avoid.

Thoughts?

That said, if we wangled the price of #2 down to 1000, and got ourselves up to 25 people, the increase would be negligible.

You need to prod all these maybes first.

I'd rather not pay an extra £50 on the off-chance some of these people decide to show up at the last minute, but I appreciate that may not be the majority view.

Agree. But I'd like all those people on the list to come (plus Cavey), so if more people come and the surcharge becomes manageable, that'd be fine with me.

If transport is an issue, I'm happy to give anyone a lift from Oxford (or some place enroute) around lunchtime (I've taken a half-day off), returning either there or somewhere handy for an onward connection on the Sunday.

I am completely up for getting the second cottage. It has advantages beyond just the extra space, like giving a quieter space for people (or babies) who want to go to sleep at a more civilised hour than the main cottage settles down. I also wonder if we'd get complaints about being too noisy if someone else was renting the second cottage while we were there. I think we were lucky last year that the second cottage was empty.

It's still less than £50/person/night. The only times I've spent less than that to go away is when I've been camping.

I'm all for going on a recruitment drive and getting cottage #2.

We have 20 confirmed -- that competely fills the first cottage (including two people sharing with couples.)

I will call the man tomorrow and haggle strongly.

I would support this. I am more than happy to pay an extra £50 for some sleep over the weekend, but don't want that to be to the loss of some attendees.
