Combines survival horror mechanics with Tomb Raider style climbing segments in a post-apocalyptic, dust engulfed urban environment. My kind of thing, really. The graphics are decent enough, mostly, but there is quite a bit of the same objects appearing everywhere going on. The sound is really good, and the overall atmosphere is great. The voice acting is atrocious at times, though.

Its original idea, because it actually has one, is how each encounter is a quick think affair, where you must decide how and in which order to tackle the bad guys with extremely limited resources - most of the time you'll carry something like 1 arrow and 2 bullets, apart from your melee weapon, although I did have plenty of health and stamina items. Even more interestingly, intimidation can also be employed - just by threatening an enemy, you can defeat him in certain circumstances.

I really enjoyed it, but then, it is the sort of thing I would really enjoy.

  20. Life Is Strange Episode 1 (PC)

I have decided to enter each episode separately here, because, since you get a credit roll after each, it totally counts.

So I actually played this first episode a while ago. I bought it on the cheap (or maybe it was free? I don't remember) to check it out, and I am glad I did. Game play wise it is a simple exploration and time puzzle game, but it is really more of a piece of interactive entertainment than anything else.

The story gets off to a slightly slow start and seems like a mere high school drama at first, but with the added twist that the protagonist has the ability to rewind time and so modify the flow of events with the benefit of hindsight. Ah, if only we could all do that, what a confusing world it would be!

It gets progressively darker as it unfolds, though, and by the end of the episode I found myself wanting to see where it would go next.

The writing is not without flaws, but there is just something about video games, putting you in the middle of the story as they do, that lets me forgive these sort of things more readily. And it does feature a lovely, slightly cartoony world of dark Americana that really draws me in, as well as characters that are revealed to have more depth than the clichés they seem like at first.

It's also the kind of work that is so stylishly self assured that it makes me enjoy things I normally wouldn't, like a particular kind of music or whatnot. It is really well made overall, and I am enjoying every minute so far.

This seemed over somewhat quicker than the first episode, but it may just have been because it was even better. I finished it in one sitting in any case.

Without giving anything away, the protagonist of the story has been reunited with an old friend, and in this episode that character sees some very interesting development into something perhaps slightly unhinged, we don't really know yet. The episode openly pays homage to Twin Peaks, which was clearly one major source of inspiration (the non-trippy bits of Twin Peaks). It is not even remotely ripping it off, though, and continues in its own style.

A particular heartbreaking event actually had me gasp out load. Not only that, but it turns out I could have prevented it (2/3rds of players did, according to the post-episode stats), which made me feel like a complete failure. You don't have the time rewind ability available at that point, though, so you only get one shot at it. Great game so far.

Things were moving along nicely, not much in the form of actual gameplay, but some intriguing decisions to be made. It was interesting to see how deeply the fallout of that event that I mentioned in the previous entry was integrated into the script. I am definitely going to play this game again to see how different the story will be with different decisions. Speaking of which, I made one in this episode that I may come to regret deeply, but by the time I realized how bad it might be, it was too late to undo.

THEN AT THE END THE STORY VEERED RATHER UNEXPECTEDLY OFF INTO THE TWILIGHT ZONE WTF

The plot thickens! There was a crying scene that just didn't really hit the right notes, and the Shocking TwistTM was a little too much for me, but no worse than your average Hollywood thriller. Apart from that it was all excellent, and a long episode - I got 5 hours out of it, but I like to take my time and take it all in. A second play-through could probably be done in a fraction of that.

There are two seemingly separate things going on in the story, one mysterious and trippy, and the other more of a thriller. It will be interesting to see if they manage to tie it all together in the last episode. I am curbing my enthusiasm to be honest, but again, this is no different from your average film, and I am rather picky with these things.

It says a lot when we can actually compare a video game to films in terms of story telling quality. I can't really stress enough how well made this game is overall.

And Episode 1 is now permanently free! So check it out, fools.

1) "I AM THE GODDAMN BATMAN!"
2) WHIZZARD PEW PEW
3) "How do I make them have sex?"
4) 2D Dark Souls

eight) The Last of Us (remastered)

AKA PT. Finished it again with a friend, after not loading it since Cottage 2015. It's still fucking horrible, even though I didn't touch the controller and had an idea of what was coming up. A few new things happened (we saw Lisa outside a window, for example), which were fucking traumatising. But we completed it! Fuck knows how.

AKA Resident Evil: Beginning Hour. There's not much to it and it's not overly scary (apart from the dummies upstairs. Fuck that shit), but I got three endings and I believe that's the most you can get right now. It clearly tried to be PT but they released it without enough "stuff" in, with the promise that more stuff would come later, and I think that hurt it.

AKA Uncharted 4. God's nips, this was good. Epic set-piece followed by epic set-piece followed by really bad winch usage followed by epic set-piece. I'm not sure I have a bad word to say about it, to be honest.

...
Why didn't I put a silly name for The Last of Us?

Pull the handle before watching the video, and see if you can find anything on the other side.

Excellent Carma fun...the game had a lot of shade thrown at it but I enjoyed (and am still enjoying) the hell out of it. Not really that much different from Reincarnation on the PC but I can play it laying on the couch on my big telly.

Wow! I can't really say anything about the story without spoiling it. Let's just say the player gets taken for quite a ride. In the end, I am not really sure if it all made total sense, but eh. In the post-game stats, I was surprised to see the final decision split down the middle among the player base.

There is a bit of clichéd writing and a few things could be tightened up. The story could also be a bit more mature, but like I previously said, it's no worse than your average film these days, and seeing video games make it this far gives me hope for even better things to come. I would certainly like to see more in this vein. Hopefully they will also think of ways to explore more of the game part of video games without sacrificing the story telling quality seen here.

One thing that bugged me throughout was a question of art direction - all the girls have almost the exact same tomboyish anorexic look except for the designated fatties. It just seems weird.

On a final note, I enjoyed the teen girl setting more than I thought I would. I think that, being the middle aged man that I am, it worked as an extra bit of escapism somehow.

Let's see, clumsy and unresponsive controls, boring and by-the-numbers design, endless repetition, unskippable cutscenes, checkpoints just before unskippable cutscenes, bugs, difficulty spikes, checkpoints just before unskippable cutscenes just before difficulty spikes, boring and confusing story, trying to do everything and doing everything poorly, this game has it all!

There are few enemy types and they are mostly bullet sponges. No bosses, not even an end boss.

The graphics are good though, 8/10, Eurogamer.

Don't know why I bothered to finish it, I guess I thought it would be a short game, but then it just went on and on. Good example of quantity over quality if ever there was one. Maximum Edition? Maximum disappointment, more like.

So here's an update of what i've been up to:

1Transistor
2.VVVVVV
3.Rayman Legends

One of the best platformers of all time. I think everybody knows this by now

4.Child of Light

An absolutely lovely sidescrolling JRPG made in france

5.Starwards Rogue

It's like The Binding of Isaac but in space. And it's kind of bullet hell. it's good fun, but looks and sounds like pants.

6.Sine Mora

A great looking but very strange shmup. And not a good kind of strange.

7.Grim Dawn

The best Diablo clone of all time. I sank way too many hours into this.

8.Morningstar: Descent to Deadrock

A budget first person sci-fi adventure game. It's ok

9.Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller

When it works, it's fantastic, but some puzzles require more work than they should, and it's too slow.

10.Moebius: Empire Rising

Liked it a lot. Don't understand all the bad reviews. It's better than Broken Age. Most things are better than broken age.

11.Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition

Great Tactical RPG that only suffers because combat is too slow. And then you die after 20 minutes and have to do it all over again. But highly recommended anyway.

137 hours! yet almost no grind, amazingly. Huge world, in full 3D at last, full of detours and secrets, almost always letting you go back to previously explored territory to do other stuff, like the hunts, which is a sort of separate quest system where you go hunt down special monsters. I love the "gambits", which allow you to gradually set up a rudimentary AI for each of your characters, making the Active Time Battle even faster and more real-time than previous games. Unfortunately, the story seems to have been written by someone who thought The Phantom Menace was the pinnacle of story telling. Fantastic game, nevertheless.

T'were not bad in the end. Not overly sold on it but I enjoyed it enough to finish it.

I hated Serious Sam 1 on the 360. I really enjoyed this. Which given that I bought a 4 pack while dirt cheap as a prank gift isn't bad going. The Dimrill who received it also enjoyed it. I have yet to pursuade Myp he wants to play it. (And the pigeon game I was gifted in return remains utterly shit)

Most of the stuff I play never really has a conclusion, like Words With Friends, Snap Attack, Candy Crush (oh I how I wish they'd stop churning out levels for this so I can just call it a day) etc, but I did at least complete something at the weekend -

1. 4 Elements

It's the usual match-three type puzzle stuff, and each world begins with a terrible hidden object section and ends with a spot-the-difference section too which is just as terrible. Both feel like filler, which is a shame since the core gameplay levels are pretty solid and I rattled through all the levels over a weekend, so it kept me coming back at least.

It's fun for a while being Batman and all, but it ultimately felt like a repetition of the original game, except that with the open world format, the metroidvania style progress that hooked me in that was lost. Some really nice level design, still, and lovely graphics. I'd definitely had my fill by the end, though.

Another puzzle game done. One of Square Enix's lesser-known games, certainly but a decent puzzler. Unfortunately the main game does get repetitive pretty quickly which is probably why I hadn't finished it before. I noticed it was still installed the other day and figured I'd go back to it.

It does have one hateful feature/bug. In a lot of games, you can just hit ESC to pause. In Yosumin!, it closes the game altogether with no warning and without saving the progress on the current stage. Bloody thing.

My first Tt LEGOTM game. I actually played it about a year ago, but got bogged down by all the OCD bait. I decided to try again, but this time just blaze through the story and ignore everything else. The decision was made easier by the fact that uninstalling the game the last time deleted my save as well, so all those hours were for naught.

Anyway, played like this it managed to be fairly entertaining, although it was no doubt more due to the LEGOTM charms and great voice work than the rather cheap and glitchy game mechanics. Also, some great set pieces A-HA!

I must concur with Lasermink. It's slightly easier, but improves on the first game in almost every way. I need to replay it to get the true ending, but this will do for now.

AKA Dark Souls 3. It was fun, but not as close to as hard as I thought it would be. There were two tricky bits that I remember - going over the roof in the Cathedral and the stupid dancy ice-sword folk in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.

Still, it was good fun. 5/7 would die again.

Exactly what you'd expect given the lineage. Doesn't really do anything too original (if you've played 3D Land at least), but brings sumptuous HD visuals to the world of Mario. It is a wonderful game at any rate. More love and care has been put into the title screen alone than many entire games. If you want more 3D Land, you won't be disappointed. If you want it to rock your world like the Galaxy games, then it doesn't quite measure up, but very few games would.

Curiously, the game does seem to have been designed too look good in actual 3D, even though the game doesn't support 3D televisions as far as I know.

Sal and I played this in co-op and it was really fun. Sort of a Diablo-lite. I've not played the first one despite owning it on PC so we'll probably give that a go next.

Short but sweet co-op platform-puzzler based on folk stories from the Inupiat (native Alaskan tribe). I enjoyed it but you may want to wait for a sale.
