A bit disappointing that they took out the map and branching missions, leaving us with what is basically a clunky third person corridor shooter.

I do love the world and story (I even have the films and a comic book), otherwise I don't think I would have persevered with what is sometimes a very annoying game, even more so than the first in the series.

Films plural? I've seen the anime one, and it wasn't bad. Are there more?

There are two in all, Downfall and Aftermath. I have this double pack:

Probably the prequel Downfall. It's the one I know about.

Y'know, how you remember it looking good on the 360, being immensely playable and sounding a treat? It's exactly how you remember it. It's not the same as the 360 version, obviously, because it's tarted up and all that but the remastering is just excellent and looks how you remember it through the filter of this gen visuals.

Anyway, I smashed through it on veteran and, frankly, it was too difficult but I sodding loved it. Apart from that fucking plane at the end which I wacked down to easy because SIXTY FUXKING SECONDS?! I did it on the 360 but it really tested my nerve. I'll get it eventually but, God-damn.

So it turns out that MW is a classic. Still.

Not as gripping or as fun as Lara Croft GO, but still pretty decent fun, and some rooms were quite challenging.

  35. Destiny Expansion I: The Dark Below (PS4)

Well I finished the main storyline of this, and I need something to pad out this list. Some of the missions were quite hard playing as a single player game.

I haven't finished the main game yet, since this seems to fall right in the middle, level wise. In fact, I'm not sure I really get the overall structure of all this. What if you'd already finished the main game when this expansion came out? Would it then be stupidly easy, or what? And as I am doing the expansions, my level is going up way faster than the level of the story quests that I'm currently doing of the main game.

And now extra missions are appearing that don't seem to be a part of any particular story line, and some of them are way lower level and are marked as easy. Why are they appearing now?

Anyway, I am currently a level 25 Titan playing level 16 missions of the main quest and starting the House of Wolves storyline as well.

Edit: I am generally very much enjoying this game, btw.

On their third attempt they got it right, removing all the things that removed the fun from the other games (especially DR1). Excellent fun when you just want to get your Zombie Murder on. Looking forward to DR4.

A new contender emerges. Against form, I have actually completed some games this year. And they're the newest, hottest titles around!!1!

1) Persona Golden: bonkers, engaging, grindy, charming. I think I got a bad ending, but have absolutely zero desire to jump back into the grind to see any of the other 6 million endings. Thoroughly enjoyed my time in this world though. Developed a bit of a crush in Chia.

2) Metal Gear Solid Revengeance: Bonkers and exactly the right length. Never fully got the hand of the controls and I probably fall slightly on the wrong side of the button-masher spectrum, but I was able to reliably slice and dice and grab spines when I wanted to, most of the time.

3) Uncharted Remastered: A portmanteau-ish of a review, I found this Unremarkable. Feeble guns, too many enemies, too many bits when I stopped playing for a period then came back and had no idea what I was meant to be doing. Which for a game that is basically on rails, is quite some achievment. Yet, when I finished this underwhelming experience, I felt compelled to dive straight into Uncharted 2, which I'm enjoying a lot more. More inventive, meatier weapons, more variety. However, my mind still wanders when I'm playing. It's all too easy to feel like you're just going through the motions and pushing directions and buttons when signalled, rather than actually playing something with some agency.

4) Steamworld Heist: As I've said elsewhere, love this game. May be the first game I try a New Game+ on.

5) Day of the Tentacle Remastered: Bliss from start to finish. Alcohol means I'd happily forgotten most of the puzzles, so was able to approach the scenarios with a weirdly uncanny unfamiliarity. Writing is spot on, the puzzles are largely satisfying and logical (the same can't be said for Broken Age, which I nearly completed this year). Having started again with Grim Fandango's remastered version and being put off by the clunkiness of the visuals and controls, was so relieved to discover such a thoughtful remaster in DOTT. Played on the Vita, the control scheme is super smart, and highlighting of interactive objects is a smart inclusion when cursor-waggling is not an option.

6) Actual Sunlight: Short, bittersweet game. Depression simulator with Hotline Miami-style-visuals. It's commendable and I'm glad I played it, but to be honest the writing wasn't strong enough for a game that is so text-driven.

7) Thomas Was Alone: Amazing. Started ages ago on the Vita and stopped for some reason. Restarted it this week and finished over a couple of commutes. Charming characters, delightful music, forgiving puzzles that never became too mind-bending (my capacity for such mental gymnastics is low, as evidenced by my stalled playthrough of The Talos Principle). I am buying the DLC at lunch and look forward to spending a few more hours in this world.

I got to the mission where they take all your weapons off you and make you fight a doctor or something while you're drugged up.

I hate missions that take weapons off me. I haven't been back to the game since.

There's a bit on the last disc of FFVIII where something similar happens. It was the last straw for a game I wasn't overly enjoying so I stopped there.

I get the feeling I'm not going to complete any more games this year as I'm currently switching between Binding of Isaac Rebirth, which I've already completed umpteen times over, to try and beat the game with all characters at all skill levels which is proving difficult, and Microsoft's Solitaire Collection which doesn't really have an end anyway, although at least I'm clocking up an achievement here and there as I go along. :)

1. Assassin's Creed Syndicate PS4

The usual runny, jumpy and stabby game, the same as the rest of the franchise. I have not played since AC3 so was nice to go back and play. I enjoyed the running round Victorian London.

VIII or VII? I found the boss fight after your material gets nicked in VII to be one of the toughest in the game.

Definitely VIII, as I finished VII a couple of times. It's been so long since I played it though so I can't remember the circumstances, just that it was on the final disc.

Actually, I mainly play Freecell (because the cards are visible from the start so feels less down to chance). Unfortunately with the Microsoft's Solitaire app, you have play the other variations to be able to unlock more Freecell levels.

51) Manhunt (PS4/2)

Old games can be crap for many reasons: they're not how you remember them; they look shit; they run like ass or, in Manhunt's case, they have a control scheme which seems weird by today's standards.

Left stick: forward and back & rotate L/R
Right stick: first person look around
L1 & R2: strafe L/R

Now, I know there may actually be some people out there that might actually use a similar layout but for most people (normal folk, if you will) we've all been using the right stick for rotating and the left stick for strafing.

Anyway, whether you will get any enjoyment from returning to Manhunt will depend on whether you can train your brain to the old control scheme. I could (eventually) and I'm pleased to say, it's still shocking amazing.

The one thing you won't remember from playing Manhunt all those years ago is that stealth is not the mainstay of the game. Guns are. Big fucking loud guns. By mission 6-8 (of 20) you are introduced to guns and a couple more levels thereon you'll mainly be exploding peoples heads like melons. Sure, there are some levels where your weapons are taken from you but you'll soon get your hands on your artillery soon enough. I'm not even sure that some of the later levels after mission 10 could even be completed completely by stealthy means. I'm sure if anyone had the patience to play this game again they would agree.

And if you did play it again (and get by the control scheme) you'd rediscover why it's a classic all these years on.

The pacing is brilliantly executed (ho-ho) (Jesus christ...). It starts slow and ramps up the action to the fake conclusion as you get OP with guns and blow the fuck outta everything before you think you're going to escape; then you're suddenly the hunted again, then you're a badass, then you're hunted, then you just go fuck shit up. None of the areas outstay their welcome and the environments are nicely diverse even if they do look a bit boxy given its age. None of the baddies outstay their welcome either as you just seem to crash through each of the gangs. The graphics do their job and the violence is tame by today's standards. I did wonder what the fuss back then could have been about.

But you realise that the sound is doing much of the heavy work to create the atmosphere. The music cues as you stalk your prey or are spotted are great and blend nicely into the ambient noise during the quiet moments. And the voice acting is just superb - I'm sure everyone remembers the Director. Man alive, he's pure genius. While I suppose someone else back then could have given a real hammy performance, this guy gets the tone, edge, malice and sinister playfulness across with perfection. But let's not forget the brilliantly voiced cast of gang members - The Smileys rambling nonsense is glorious. That one guy who kept complaining about his shoes made me laugh my ass off (All dialogue for The Smileys - all shoe related nonsense in the first 3 minutes...There's almost 40 minutes for each gang. 40 minutes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymI3SU3 ... rpQvQHTLyl ).

And so on, the only reason why they'll never do a (good) (2nd) sequel is thanks to the negative press way back, when it's clear that Rockstar could knock this shit out the park today with their talent. We can only live in hope...

I did start it recently, but I couldn't get on with the controls. It is funny that as recently as 2004 we still didn't have a standard control scheme for 3rd-person games like this.

Sure does.

Hey, and here's something I've found out years later for the first time, there's a God mode accessible from the main menu but you need the code so you hold all four shoulder buttons and this weird backwards voice plays which gives it to you. Amaze.

I also played this recently. I really, really tried to like it, but it was impossible, and when I got to the escort mission, that was it.

Played through on hard. Not that it's really that much harder; some of the colossi have an extra vital point or two that you need to reach. In a way it feels like the proper way to play the game.

Yeah, I've only done about half of those, and only on normal.

I seem to remember completing them all on normal on t'pigs2, and failing on the crawly one in hard. (either I did them all bar him, or you had to do them in order, I can't remember)

I didn't even complete the game on t'pigs4, owing to aiming being entirely impossible on Mr sand snake.

Excellent fun with a seasonal theme. In some ways it's a backwards step from 3 (seems like there were fewer combo options) and the story was fairly light but I love me some zombie murder...and murder there was.

53) The Last Guardian (PS4)

The highs are high and the lows are the controls and camera. It's such a gorgeous game that looks like nothing else on the market. Ueda fortunately remembered that there are gamers who want lengthy narrative experiences and not just another online multiplayer shooter, and boy did he deliver. I don't think he's compromised on his vision (probably thanks to the shift to PS4) despite the problems in development and presents an amazing game for this generation. It could be like one of Studio Ghibli's earlier films. It's magnificent and I'm certain I'll remember the time shift late on the game as something that stopped me in my tracks just to look around the world for a bit while Trico fell asleep waiting for me.

54) Rainbow Six: Siege (PS4)

Finished all situations on Realistic difficulty. I'm still annoyed that thy couldn't string a cut scene or two between the situations to create an awesome single player campaign cause the situations on realistic were terrific fun that are reminiscent of the old games with much much better environments.

I'm level 24 on the multiplayer which has been shockingly ignored by BeeX when it's damn near the best multiplayer game out there at the moment.

This is amazing, one of the best mobile games I've ever played. Totally worth £8 in my mind - it's a premium Mario experience for a new generation. Still loads to do (get all pink, purple and black coins, beat Zaphod on the leaderboards) and Toad Rally will keep me coming back to it for a while yet.
