It's fun for a while being Batman and all, but it ultimately felt like a repetition of the original game, except that with the open world format, the metroidvania style progress that hooked me in that was lost. Some really nice level design, still, and lovely graphics. I'd definitely had my fill by the end, though.

I loved Asylum but City felt far too sprawling. I never finished it.

Another puzzle game done. One of Square Enix's lesser-known games, certainly but a decent puzzler. Unfortunately the main game does get repetitive pretty quickly which is probably why I hadn't finished it before. I noticed it was still installed the other day and figured I'd go back to it.

It does have one hateful feature/bug. In a lot of games, you can just hit ESC to pause. In Yosumin!, it closes the game altogether with no warning and without saving the progress on the current stage. Bloody thing.

My first Tt LEGOTM game. I actually played it about a year ago, but got bogged down by all the OCD bait. I decided to try again, but this time just blaze through the story and ignore everything else. The decision was made easier by the fact that uninstalling the game the last time deleted my save as well, so all those hours were for naught.

Anyway, played like this it managed to be fairly entertaining, although it was no doubt more due to the LEGOTM charms and great voice work than the rather cheap and glitchy game mechanics. Also, some great set pieces A-HA!

I must concur with Lasermink. It's slightly easier, but improves on the first game in almost every way. I need to replay it to get the true ending, but this will do for now.

AKA Dark Souls 3. It was fun, but not as close to as hard as I thought it would be. There were two tricky bits that I remember - going over the roof in the Cathedral and the stupid dancy ice-sword folk in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley.

Still, it was good fun. 5/7 would die again.

Exactly what you'd expect given the lineage. Doesn't really do anything too original (if you've played 3D Land at least), but brings sumptuous HD visuals to the world of Mario. It is a wonderful game at any rate. More love and care has been put into the title screen alone than many entire games. If you want more 3D Land, you won't be disappointed. If you want it to rock your world like the Galaxy games, then it doesn't quite measure up, but very few games would.

Curiously, the game does seem to have been designed too look good in actual 3D, even though the game doesn't support 3D televisions as far as I know.

Sal and I played this in co-op and it was really fun. Sort of a Diablo-lite. I've not played the first one despite owning it on PC so we'll probably give that a go next.

Short but sweet co-op platform-puzzler based on folk stories from the Inupiat (native Alaskan tribe). I enjoyed it but you may want to wait for a sale.

I think that was free on PS+ or something. I wasn't overly impressed by it.

It's always a bit clunky going back to an earlier game in a series but this still held up even after playing Osiris first. Two thumbs up!

2D co-op space confuse-em-up where up to four of you control different aspects of a spaceship from inside the craft, having to walk to each different control station to navigate, fire guns, control the shield, etc. Really fun and the bosses were just on the good side of frustrating. Highly recommend, but it's only local co-op, sadly.

Might as well update this:

28) Uncharted 4 (PS4): Amazing. It's the best looking game I've ever played. That Madagascar level? INCREDIBLE.
29) Xenoblade Chronicles X (WiiU): Amazing. The only game you need for the WiiU. A real "desert island" game.
30) Inside (PC): Amazing. Linear narrative game of the year. Unsurpassed atmosphere.
31) Deadbolt (PC): Amazing. Hotline Miami meets Gunpoint.
32) Shutshimi (PS4): Daft 10 second shooter.
33) Dark Souls 3 (PS4): Amazing.
34) Dark Souls 3 DLC (PS4): Slightly less amazing Soulsborne DLC but still amazing DS DLC.
35) Nuclear Throne (PS4): Amazing. I can't get enough of this.
36-37-38) Zombie Army Trilogy (PC): Come for the headshots stay for the immersive story.
39) Battleblock Theatre (PC): Meow, meow see?
40) Resident Evil Revelations 2 (PS4): Astonishingly, it's nothing like RER1, because it's actually really good. I imagine if you had someone to play with you'd bloody love this (Not as much as RE5, say, but near enough). It's challenging, looks nice enough and, even Barry sodding Burton is good. I especially liked when he smashed down a gate with a crane and says:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
"Who's the master of unlocking now?"

41) Rise of the Tomb Raider (PC): The same as the original reboot or worse boring borefest? The latter.
42) Party Hard (PC): Shit.
43) Hyper Light Drifter (PC): Amazing. Zelda-ish with fab combat.
44) The Last of Us Remastered (PS4): A great game played on insane difficulty broke some of the magic but improved some bits too so still great.

I was worried this was going to be a clumsy, artsy fartsy affair like Dear Esther, but it turned out to be a fairly straightforward and ominous sci-fi tale. Exploration is almost always rewarded with extras pieces of the story (and side stories). The area of the game was quite a lot larger and more varied than I expected. To top it off, it has one of the most beautiful sound tracks of any piece of interactive entertainment I have ever tried.

I would call it a benchmark for the genre and an essential title if you like this sort of thing.

Oh, and don't forget you can hold R2 to run!

R2 to run doesn't work indoors, during moments when it wants you to walk very-fucking-slowly or very much at all since the difference between running and walking is negligible and barely distinguishable.

They certainly could have done with making running an immediate, noticable effect.

AKA Dark Souls 3, but with only a whip. Easier than the first playthrough in many ways, but next to impossible in others. Enough Souls for now.

AKA Shadow Complex: Remastered. It looks exactly like I remember, which almost certainly means it looks much better. It's the same game, with a couple of new bits and a load of new hand-to-hand moves, which pleased me greatly. Flying kicks! Double takedowns! Strangling dudes with your feet!

It's an utter, utter joy to play, and remains one of my favorite games of all time, only it's even better now!

An incoherent mess. When the game decides it's ok to just be a solid shooter, it serves up a few sublime moments and great levels. But then there's all the other stuff, like driving and crafting and card games and fuck off already.

The twitch reaction shooting was clearly designed for mouse and keyboard as well, while the driving requires a joypad to enjoy. Since I couldn't find a way to disable rumble, that meant constantly plugging and unplugging my controller. The menus weren't comfortable either way.

The last level and ending was clearly someone throwing their hands up and deciding to just ship whatever they had.

While the vibe and plot are still so wrong for a diablo game (does blizzard even cares about that anymore?), the game is fun and compelling. Grim Dawn and Path of Exile are both better though.

13. Borderlands 2

I liked the early game, before the enemies became HP sponges. At the end i was forcing myself to finish it so i could have another game in this list.

Been playing witcher 3, so it'll be a while before i update my list.

I thought this would appeal to my girlfriend since she loved the Endless Ocean games, but she looked on as I played the first bit and decided she didn't like the cartoonish look.

Personally, I am just a bit disappointed as well. The "story", or whatever that was, went over my head, if it did indeed make any sense. It is essentially an underwater "walking" sim, but it just didn't appeal to me much for some reason. It's not just the graphics as such, but all the mystical stuff like seemingly having running water underwater (Some mystical energy? Dunno) broke the immersion (aha ha, that joke again!) for me. And it certainly didn't help that the sound and music have an annoying quality to them, like it's all been compressed to a really low bit rate or something.

Where the hell did this come from? The single player is ace. There's a ton of pew pew pew and roaring Titan action, sure, but then there's this crackers time travel bit in it and then some rudimentary puzzle platformer bit and, well, some big ass action sequences too but that doesn't stick in my mind as much as the general fluidity of the package. It's Respawns best effort at pinching some of the ideas and pacing from games such as Half Life and cramming it into a CoD style campaign. Seriously impressive but marred by being too short. Did I mention it looks fantastic? It does. The bad guys are australian so, y'know, there's also that too. Not worth getting just for the campaign but then again neither has CoD, but with a brilliant multiplayer this is a corking little surprise package.

  31. Rage (PC)
  32. Abzû (PS4)
  33. Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)

Final Fantasy Classic, distilled to its essence, and a triumphant return to form, lore- and storywise. Unlike previous consoles, the PS3 is almost able to do the Final Fantasy artwork justice, and it is one of the prettiest games on the PS3, although a couple of areas do feel a bit rushed. The second form of the final boss, though... Holy crap, one of the most amazing things I've seen in a video game.

The game might well be impenetrable to those who aren't familiar with the series, though, since a lot of the gameplay is super fast and automated. Apparently it proved divisive among fans as well, since it strips a lot of fluff, such as towns. Instead you do all your shopping "online", at the save points. It also returns to the very linear style of the older games.

Furthermore, you no longer give individual commands during battle except in a few very special circumstances, such as summoning and using items, and then you can only do this with the party leader. Instead, you choose among predefined roles for your characters. Roles are arranged into paradigms, and your main task during battle is to switch between these paradigms at the optimal moments. Characters will then act automatically according to their roles as defined by the paradigm. Battles are 100% real time fireworks displays and can be over in as little as 5 seconds! There are no MPs (magic is free), and HPs and status effects are reset at the end of every battle. Special TPs (technical points) are introduced, which is the only thing that has to be recharged over time and are used for a few special things like summons.

Any battle can be retried, which means an immediate reset to a position just before the battle was initiated. Same thing happens at game over, so no more agonizing over how far it is to the next save point. And no random battles, every battle can be anticipated, and many can be avoided altogether. Battles are carefully designed as well to make you face as many different permutations of enemies as possible.

As always with FF, though, when it comes to developing the characters, you either feel led by the hand, or if you wish to go your own way, that you don't really have enough information without a strategy guide.

Ultimately, it does feel slightly simplistic after XII, but on the other hand it doesn't feel as drawn out, and the more linear nature allows it to have an infinitely better story.

25. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight (PC)

A.K.A. Momodora 4.
Yeah, ok, I'd got up to the final boss before I even touched any of the other games, so not as short as you may think. Still on the short side. ven more metroidy than 2. Some dark souls influences in there. Still fairly cheap.

Remember the first one being great stuff but you basically went just to the right? NOW YOU CAN GO LEFT. It doesn't matter though because the game was just an infuriating mess. Thank fuck it's over. Avoid.

Well, you may as well play the first two, as they're free. https://rdein.itch.io/ (You'll need joytokey in order to play with a pad for these)
Probably about 1-2 hours each.
3 was about 1.5 hours, but you can rush through in much less time. I'd avoid easy mode, if I were you.
4 took 5 hours, according to the steams.

Generally speaking, quality goes up each time.

14. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

It's so sublime that i fear that everything will feel like shit afterwards. I'm definitely not going to touch anything which tries to have a serious plot and characterisation, because it will feel completely silly now (anything by Bioware and Telltale are off limits). And technically it's so understatedly beautiful, without ridiculous amount of bloom or particle effects.

Well, it's perfect, and now i'm off to play some racing, pinball or dumb fps game.

Streets of Rage meets Final Fight meets ultra violence meets Hotline Miami meets chunky pixel art meets Chuck Norris fist in your face.

It gets really sodding hard towards the end, like, really hard; so hard in fact that I had to add in a AI controlled bot to help me get through the last level even on "normal" difficulty. But a challenge has never been so much bloody fun. Loves it.

1. The Walking Dead Season 2 (PS4) - completed all five episodes
2. Super Monkey Ball (GCN) - completed Beginner Mode
3. Mario Kart: Double Dash (GCN) - completed all 50cc cups in co-op
4. Dead Rising 2 (PS4) - Ending C, 28 survivors
5. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (PS4) - completed story
6. Never Alone (PS4) - completed story
7. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (PC) - completed story
8. Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (PC) - completed story
9. Dr Langeskov, The Tiger, and the Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist (PC)
10. Badland GOTY Edition (PS4) - completed Day I & Daydream

I can see why this originated as a touchscreen game. I actually think this is made harder by playing in co-op. It's reasonable enough fun but not brilliant.

Well, as much as you can finish it, anyway. Completed the campaign. I had the best prisoners. Well, Until Pratt stuffed it up and lost my enormous no incident bonus.
