Today I was speaking to a neighbour, a young woman with a four month old, who said it was taboo to breast feed in Asian culture.

As she has just said 'Asian' culture, rather than any specific background, cultural, regional or religious, I thought I'd Google this to find out more. I googled 'breastfeeding Asian taboo'

Don't be Mimi. Especially at work.

I've never come across that in any of the support work I did :S

It's not something I'd heard of either. I should say that this girl is breastfeeding, but she was telling me of how it was very difficult to get support from friends etc because of the taboo, but she was lucky as her mum had breastfed against the taboo and told her to go for it and her husband is supportive.

Just say you're ace at everything and give yourself top marks. They'll negotiate it down probably so you might as well start high. There's probably no penalty for this approach. And you need more training.

Considering cultural taboos tend to be historic rather than emergent, I very much doubt they were putting babies straight on formula in the 16th century.

No, she's not. She wanted to (and did) go against the taboo and has breastfed since. She was telling me that she was so worried about the cultural taboo causing trouble when she was in public that she took a bottle, but her boy had no interest in the bottle so she was so grateful that he almost forced the first out-of-home feed, so now she just 'whips them out anywhere'.

And yes, many women choose to go straight to donuts from the first feed.

I know that modern parents can sometimes do that, but a cultural taboo across all of Asia seemed somewhat unlikely based on the regular availability of formula and clean water in the less 'first world' parts of it. If it does exist it is bloody odd that such a thing has caught on in the modern world, going against millennia of tradition.
