Marvel Unlimited (Netflix for Marvel, basically) is $10/mo. I have no idea what coverage of Civil War is like, and its website doesn't want to tell me, but it has a lot of stuff in general. I guess you could speed through it pretty quickly and then unsubscribe again.

Good news everybody!

Ooh, don't agree with this so much - Cap's starts out the "SIRYESSIR" soldier who obeys orders without thinking but his long-term arc is that he should trust himself rather than the government, and Iron Man starts out thinking only about himself and learns that he should be responsible for his actions. That's part of the reason that neither of them could understand why the other didn't agree with them.

Well, OK, granted. But both of those arcs were (rebooted characters notwithstanding) completed sometime in the 60s, so for a very long time, they've been in the final stage IYSWIM.

Compared to the legal choice of $55 for the year, it's not worth my time to even set up any piracy solution. Plus I'd feel awfully cheap.

Good. Tell me what the Civil War coverage is like.

Sadly my iPad mini isn't great for comics. Nexus 9 it is, then!

You could still pay them the money if it makes you feel better. Using your own reader is far nicer than trying to use the Unlimited one, and you don't have to worry it randomly trying to re-download stuff while you're on a train.

Disclaimer: I've not used Mylar (but all it does is fetch cbr/z files), and I last used MU when it was literally brand new, so hopefully it's much better.

Will do! My Air 2 is pretty good for comics, although I'm still waiting for an all-colour A4-sized eInk reader.

Keep watching I guess.

Also, apparently, the Hulk thing happened before the Stamford incident. The whole thing's described in some amount of detail here:

He's not, though. Cap (throughout Marvel) has always stood for American exceptionalism, and that has tinges of individualism and libertarianism. It's the American Dream, baby! The side he lands on in Civil War is consistent with his character. Whereas Stark, for all his bad boy rebellion, is a billionaire who owns an arms company; he's part of the institution. He is The Man. I always felt this central division was very cleverly drawn.

I agree to a certain degree with your analysis of Cap's character but he's ultimately a soldier and tends to believe in The System so it's usually treated pretty seriously on the occasions he 'rebels'. The setup of the comics Civil War makes a credible argument for this because the impact of the Registration Act is potentially massive, but in the film it seems to be purely because a single friend of his is in trouble. I realise this is coming off the back of the revelations around SHIELD shaking his faith somewhat but it still seems more likely he'd fight for Buckie to get a fair trial rather than somewhat selfishly using this as a reason to not only go underground himself but to drag people like The Falcon along with him.

The main Civil War comics are very good but I massively enjoyed all the tie-ins and side stories because the idea of a Registration Act universally affected all heroes. If you're looking to catch up on it I'd recommend reading them all and not just the core books.

That's what I meant. It kicked off the Registration, but no-one thought it was a good idea until the Stamford Incident.

I'm not going to that website when I'm intending to read the whole lot again ;)

I vaguely recall people on Twitter saying the client had improved. Let's see how myp gets on.

Edit -- also, comics are huge and my tablets relatively small. There's something to be said for a Netflix-style streaming storage model, rather than having to shuffle files between NAS and tablet like it's the bloody dark ages.

If you haven't already bought a Nexus 9 then really don't, they're fucking awful. I'm just waiting for the reviews of the Pixel C to confirm it's decent (and for it to be released of course) and I'm grabbing one as my N9 annoys the shit out of me.

The recommended Marvel Reading order used to omit Civil War #5. Which was presumably a mistake, not that they didn't like that issue.

It's listed here as number 59. I'd better get cracking.

Basically, everyone sided with Cap in the comics run, because Cap has always been popular in the print medium and Stark being a dick. Stark's side was presented as being the right one.

Everyone will side with Stark in the movies because Downey Jr playing Stark is about 18 billion times more entertaining than thingy whatsitsface's Cap. Cap will be presented as being right, because it's not called Iron Man: Civil War.

This got me thinking of other comic runs from that era I really enjoyed and anyone who's got a Marvel Unlimited sub would do well to check out Warren Ellis's shot at Thunderbolts; issues 110 to 121 as far as I can tell. Due to Reasons, Norman Osborn has convinced people he's on the straight and narrow and is put in charge of the Thunderbolts project (a team mostly comprised of super-villains who're looking for redemption and to commute prison sentences by under-taking jobs for the government). Right from the start it's made clear to the reader that, of course, he's still actually completely mental and the run basically catalogues his slow breaks down. This culminates in the final glorious couple of issues which are some of the funniest things I've ever read. This run takes place right after Civil War so would make a good follow up for anyone (re-)reading that because of this thread.

Of course the main reason Civil War didn't work out to plan is that, although the idea was that the pro-Reg side was supposed to be in the right, the marvel writers include a variety of hippies and crackpots who completely ignored this. Of course they were the better writers.

And let's not forget the amount of dumb that came out of the storyline... Penance, Spidey unmasking which led to the stupidest storyline ever, the death of Captain America...

I know very little about the Marvel universe or Civil War, but from what I've read, it all hinges on this Superhuman Registration Act that requires superhumans to make themselves known etc.

Why is Tony Stark included in this?

I know in the comics Iron Man has changed so much and now has the components of his suit embedded into his bones or some stupid shit like that, which obviously would make him superhuman, but movie Iron Man is just a normal man who happens to have a "super" suit, he's hardly got superpowers.

It's super heroes (and villains). Those who are masked vigilantes basically. Super powers don't come into it.

He owns the suit, though (and could build another one if they took it away). And he kills people if he decides they need killing, which I think is the main point.

So, I've now read the Civl War novelisation (I never really get on with graphic novels), and I have some concerns

1) Aren't they going to need an awful lot more superheroes to make this work? There's supposed to be like 50 of the fuckers involved. The trailers seems to show Falcon, Black Panther, and someone else fairly unidentifiable, and that's it.

2) There's supposed to be no real right and wrong side. The moral ambiguity is a lot of the point - but by making this a captain America film instead of an avengers film aren't they sort of picking a side for you?

So, I've now read the Civl War novelisation (I never really get on with graphic novels)

I'm amazed this is even a thing that exists. Who in the hell, apart from you, cares enough about comics to want to know what's going on but doesn't actually like comics?

1) Aren't they going to need an awful lot more superheroes to make this work? There's supposed to be like 50 of the fuckers involved. The trailers seems to show Falcon, Black Panther, and someone else fairly unidentifiable, and that's it.

You need as many superheroes as you've got. The point of it is that it drags in all your existing heroes as it potentially impacts them all. In the comics that means fuckloads. In the films that means as many as you've so far introduced, which isn't very much.

Yeah, I'm not sure how that's going to play out, especially as it'll mean flying in the face of the comics story line. It does make some sort of sense in terms of the established films though in that the last Captain America film was dealing with the corruption of SHIELD and Captain America, as someone who's always championed The System, having that pulled out from under him. This is an extension of that arguably to have him on the wrong side of the law. It also makes sense that they want the actual Avengers films to see them all together fighting some global threat, rather than just squabbling between themselves.
