I kept an XP machine running for over a year after even Extended Support ended. (Obviously there was nothing important on it in case it got pwned.)

Prior to Extended Support ending it got updates for all sorts of stuff all the time, and even after extended support ended it received a handful of security updates and suchlike.

Typically (officially) you end up only getting security updates, not bugfixes, but they evaluate the importance of bugfixes too and put them out if appropriate.

Also don't forget that XP downloading an update doesn't mean that XP is being updated. iE, .Net, Office etc all have different support timelines.

I have carefully and deliberately only installed updates that aren't related to Windows 10 on my machine for as long as possible because although I do want to upgrade eventually, I don't want the nags, and I haven't backed up my laptop in ages and have too much work etc to risk it going wrong. I suppose I best get a move on. :DD

(Of course the irony is that all that time I've wasted going through individual updates manually could have been spent doing backups and the upgrade...)

Windows 10 has started playing up for me. Every now and again, my notifications and Cortana stop working and are only fixed with a system restore.

July 29th officially, and there doesn't seem to be much indication that Microsoft will extend it.

Windows 10 is fine overall, although in terms of anything that's better than Windows 7, the only concrete thing I can point to is the way it handles updates.

The last big round of updates a couple of weeks ago arrived on the Windows 7 machines in the house as 14-16 separate updates, but arrived on the two Windows 10 machines as a single consolidated update.

Everything else is just a matter of taste IMO.

File History on Windows 10 would be really good, but it doesn't work properly, which is a shame.

TBH I couldn't use 7 now if I wanted to. I am running no less than four sound cards and on Windows 7 it was a nightmare. I remember having to disable each one in Device Manager and just being able to use one at a time. Then all of a sudden Windows 8 comes along and it's as easy to switch between them as ever.

The sound handling in 8 and onward is just awesome. No conflicts, no BSODs and no aggro. I had absolute nightmares with both Creative and Asus cards under Win 7.

They may have fixed it but tbh I wouldn't go back any way.

Overall I have no issues with it these days, they look be fixing things with updates.

I used to have any issue with explorer that I would get 20 or more folders that were all copies of my documents when I had the window open

I had redirected My Documents to my OneDrive, that issue went away after the last updates.

Still have odd things like all my network devices vanish from file explorer and I have to turn on network sharing again.

Hey guys, I don't know who else here is still using good old reliable lovely Windows 7, but I switched on my computer this morning and immediately after logging in was greeted with a screen telling me that Windows 7 would no longer be supported by security fixes, and that I really, really should upgrade to Windows 10.

Kind of shocked! I figured Windows 7 would be supported like XP, so I don't know if this is scaremongering or what. I'm kind of reluctant to upgrade because everything's running smoothly and Adobe loves nothing more than to go randomly insane with catalogues etc whenever operating systems are updated, so was hoping to avoid it. Any thoughts on whether this is them being cheeky monkeys and not really meaning it, or do I now have to click install with a great big grimace on my face.

P.S: Aware of free Windows 10 deadline of the 27th of July, but, y'know. Ugh.

Microsoft are being breathtakingly disingenuous with the Windows 7 support situation to the point of scaremongering and falsehood. It will be in Extended Support until 2020 which means that it's fully covered by all necessary updates (including security and general fixes), you just won't get any new features or enhancements.

In short, Windows 7 is absolutely fine to use and secure until 2020.

EDIT - I'm keeping Windows 7 on five of the seven computers in our house, only two I've moved to Windows 10. And on one of those Windows 10 upgraded machines, Photoshop (admittedly an older version, but one that worked perfectly on Windows 7) became very crashy on Windows 10.

Very surprised that you got that message. Assuming you're on SP1, which I'd very much expect, extended support runs through until 2020, and that definitely includes security fixes.

I was a big fan of 7 too. Managed to avoid 8 and 8.1 completely and went straight to 10. To me, I don't want an operating system to get in the way of what I'm trying to do and Windows 10 generally does that. The only nuisance I've had it with it is on my laptop - I often hit start and start typing the program (I'm still not calling them apps) I want and on occasions, the search just hasn't worked and I've had to rebuild the index on it. Been fine for a while since though.

That doesn't work either. I did find a fix a while back but after a while it reverts to not working. Usually it reappears for a while after an update.

Hmm, saw the update warning again from Microsoft and read it more carefully this time. Looks to be a warning about Service Pack 1 not being installed, which I've tried umpteen times before with a failure each time. (Somewhat cheekily it suggests Windows 10 in big bold font as a fix for update woes, and then squirrelled away in the lower corner it says in somewhat smaller font, ' Or you could just update Service Pack 1. Um.') So, it's failed each time so far. Tried it with the Windows Update Fix-It paving the way, with Anti-Virus turned off and various other methods. Going to try deleting all the temporary update files next on the weekend before running it again. Then... I don't know, guess I'll try an 'In Place' update, though I hear it can be risky. I've got a second internal disc drive which I back all my photographs up to, so they should be safe at least, I guess.

Gngh. Wish I could figure out why this isn't working. Ugh.

Every three months I back up from the internal back up drive to an external back up drive. Though I haven't tried any cloud storage yet. I'm planning on drastically winnowing my photographic catalogue down to the essentials before I do that.

40,000 isn't a lot at all, unless you're on dialup. LiveDrive gives you automatic backups with unlimited space for £5 a month. No excuses!

Google photo backups is only infinite free storage for downsized images. Fine for snaps, but not great if you're a semi-pro photographer.

It used to be 65,000 - but I dearly love a harsh curatorial culling. I'm hoping to get it down to 25,000 eventually. (All the wedding stuff will, naturally, remain untouched.) And yeah, we're talking RAW, TIFF and RAF files here, so pretty chunky at 20mb through 50mb - and a few 125mb!

Thanks for the cloud backup nod. That sounds pretty good. How does it work, do you simply assign a folder for it to look in to and filch from at a set time every week, or something?

You can install a widget that will keep a folder synced. As Cras says, space is limited to 15gig for full res, but you can have unlimited space for reduced resolution backups

Assuming Pete meant LiveDrive, then yeah, you'd tell it where your photos were and have it back them up every night (or on every file change, depending on your internet speeds). Then just leave your computer on for a few days to let it do the initial sync, and you're golden.

Does anyone happen to know know if I can do a clean install of Windows 10 with an 8.1 license key or do I actually have to go through the rigmarole of installing 8.1 and upgrading?
