I'd say you differ somewhat from the prevailing opinion, JC - most folks seem to be of the view that 7 is a superb OS, and 8 was a dog that was upgraded to 'decent' by 8.1.

Any one who balked at the front end simply didn't give it more than two minutes before deciding its fate.

You just called the UI god awful. Considering what most people do all day is interact with the UI, I'd say that qualifies as a bad OS.

I don't think that's fair; a lot of people thought 8's interface was terrible certainly, myself included, but I don't think anyone ever claimed the OS itself was bad as such. It's just that it didn't bring any improvements I wanted enough to put up with the god awful UI.

This is a complete straw man you've just made up in your head. No one's suggesting not moving to it because they don't want to "spending a day or two learning how to use it". People are wary because a lot of products, especially major OS upgrades, have issues in the first few months which is a fact of life. And especially if you're quite happy with the OS you've got it makes perfect sense to wait. I'm not because fuck it, but I totally understand why loads of people will.

Kov - yeah I know you can have USB virtual RS232s, but the archaic, proprietary comms software we have to use for downloading specialist equipment doesn't like them.

Every new Microsoft OS is less compatible than the previous one.

I've got PC games that dont run on each successive release. Ubik didnt run on XP, Scarface wont work on 7. Plenty of other examples. Fine, if you played them, finished them, will never play them again and dont care. Yes I know about Good Old Games too before anyone mentions that one.


I dont agree with the principle that newer is always better, and you cant tell me that Microsoft giving this away is because they suddenly became an altruistic company.

I thought Vista got a bit of a bad rap, it really wasn't that bad... on a decent machine.

7 is still going strongly on 3 of my PCs. For anything newer, I've really only got experience with Mavericks and Yosemite. I quite like those too.

Make sure you set "Cortana" (sounds like an 80s car to me) to record everything you say. I wonder what else Microsoft allow to access your hard drive? Or will in the future.

Did I read Solitaire now has adverts?

I don't see what the problem is. Microsoft need my details so they can serve me better with adverts that they're going to be serving anyway? I'd rather see adverts for stuff I might be interested in.

And yes, solitaire does show an advert at the bottom but only on the menu screen so far. It's actually a nifty version all tied into Xbox live!
