It killed the proverbial two birds innit:

1) An arty juxtaposition of Windows 10 with toilet, which of course has associations with shit. Therefore provocative, like that Daniel Hirsute chap used to do.

2) I do all my reading of magazines whilst perched on the toilet anyway. (PC Pro, Custom PC, Private Eye.) So I was in the area already.

EDIT - I even applied a couple of those modern 'filter' things to make it look more challenging, which apparently even phones can do now. Amazing times.

I upgraded on Friday, I've only really used it today. Impressions so far - it's better than eight. :p

The text in inactive window titles is drawn in gray rather than black, too (on a non-Insider build).

Good job you only mentioned one of them or I'd never get anything done again. Stupid brain.

Rather long winded update out today

On all my devices, (including one I just rebuilt) it told me there were issues with an update, so I set it off myself from the update page. The update I had issue with is one for Windows 10 OS not a patch so to speak.

Then it installs and reboots and you get the update screen you see on windows 7 saying "configuring updates" Then after that you get another screen with a circle showing the update progress. This took the longest and there were several reboots.

When that is done you get one of those annoying screens saying there has been an update and your files have not been changed, similar to the first time you log into Windows 10 or 8.

Took about 15 minutes and I can't see very much that's new or different!

Is the Fall Update*, its got a *lot* of fit and finish in it, plus new Skype integration (and a movie maker thing?) Delivered as a full OS upgrade, which is why you saw the installation screen.

* Windows 10 was codenamed Threshold, this is Threshold 2. Next big update is Redstone which has more featureful changes. Kind of like a tick-tock cycle - features, fix, features, fix...

Lot of issues with this by all accounts, not had them myself but...

If you have an SD bus with an SD card inserted while installing the update then it will stall at 44%

Its also removing lots of 3rd party software (you are told what it removes but this shouldn't happen) "CPU-Z, speccy, 8gadgetpack, a Cisco VPN client, SATA drivers, SpyBot, RSAT, F5 VPN, HWMonitor " have all been removed.

Also lots of default app choices are set back to MS services, sure that wasn't a mistake :D

That Cisco VPN client is a buggy, incompatible and very end-of-life piece of shit that you can only get onto windows 10 in the first place by installing OTHER VPN software and doing registry hacks - it won't upgrade to 10 with it already installed.

Its horrible, I hate it and yes, I have to use it for remote working.

But shit they've switched from warn-before as in the upgrade. Probably figure they've got no choice now.

I use a Cisco VPN client for work. I've no idea if it worked after the upgrade as the first thing I then did was wipe and reinstall of Windows but, having done that, and then a fresh install of the VPN client, it works fine as it always did.

The AnyConnect client is supported. It's the older VPN Client that's rubbish and incompatible.
Annoyingly, although we can use AnyConnect for our own VPN, a lot of our engineers need to keep the older one to connect to customers networks.

Our excellent third party support is based around Kaseya which only has a licence for the old VPN Client (which is the one being removed), not AnyConnect.

Its even got known security flaws, which is made more hilarious given that we were forced to drop Windows VPN because of a theoretical security flaw that can be removed with a setting change.

None of this is inspiring me to switch to Windows 10. Current plan is to wait until the last month or two of the MEGA FREE UPGRADE OFFER, 'upgrade' a couple of the low impact PCs first (main lounge media centre PC, kitchen media centre laptop), test CRITICAL APPLICATIONS such as fruit machine emulators and MAME, and take it from there.

I thought you were getting a new PC? surely that will come with Windows 10 already installed?

Not sure how much space you have, nor how many inputs you have on your monitor but recently I was running two computers into the same monitor with a simple USB switch. That way you can keep your old PC for Mame and all of that older stuff and just use the new one for more intense gaming?

We binned Cisco VPN this year after using it for a good 10 or more years at work

We use something called Global Protect now, so as long as you have a working internet connection it just connects to work.

It also allows you to use your own internet connection at home for browsing so no work filters, and you can print from home as well now, the Cisco VPN used to lock you into work so you couldn't do this.

Nah I'll most likely buy with no OS, as I can always legitimately install an OS of my choice from work on my main PC, (as it gets used a lot for work), so could still go for Windows 7 Ultimate if I preferred.

I really wouldn't want to have two PCs on the go at once in my corner of the room (even though there are three PCs and one laptop in this room :D), if old emulators don't work on Windows 10 then I'll basically just have to avoid it until 2020 and weigh up my options then.

Msdn licensing (assuming that's what you're talking about) is actually very restrictive. As soon as you use it for something not *directly* related to development or test (eg work email, looking something up on stack overflow), you need a separate OS license.

But windows 10 OEM (not retail) licenses have a downgrade clause.

I've recently checked with our TAM and whilst MS aren't as easygoing as they used to be about it, my work usage of my main PC still qualifies.

As for the wider issue of 'TO WINDOWS 10 OR NOT TO WINDOWS 10', no motivation whatsoever at the moment to go for it.

You should sort out some keyboard macros. One for Windows 10, another for Borderlands and maybe one for The Walking Dead would save you some serious time.

so I gather. I just figured it might be useful to point out that should you opt for a windows 10 with a new PC you can legitimately downgrade it to 7 then when support ends in 2025 upgrade. They might get close after a decade.

Strange interpretation of me slating Cisco and saying the windows upgrade is a bit shit.

Why do you feel the need to pick apart basically every post I decide to make?

You made the assertion, so if you don't want to look silly you'll have to provide evidence. Saying 'the proof is out there' is lame and makes you look like you have a persecution complex.

Offhand I'm not sure I've replied to you in the last six months apart from this throwaway joke, so obviously I don't think it's true.

I've totally gone and done it on my gaming PC. Everything seems fine so far but I kinda miss the start button box thing from 8.1. There wasn't anything wrong with that if you ask me and it looked kinda nice.

Why would you need email management if you only had one email account? I've got multiple accounts that need managing so logging into a single web client is impractical. Plus, it's my business stuff so I need my email signature and shit on there.

There, see?

Email signatures are beyond most web clients, you're quite right.

Also, I totally recommended Thunderbird.

Am I? I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. I'd have to set it up and stuff and I doubt I'd have the ability or time to do that. Some guy did some code for mine where the pictures are dragged from my website or other so I don't think I could pull that off.

You're not right (although Gmail is shit for signatures, FIG). Very few people use Outlook (etc) for dealing with multiple email accounts - they normally find it on their PC when they arrive at work and continue to use it forever, but there's no point. Managing several accounts is a good reason for using it, though (although I'd rather have all those accounts being pulled into one central online account, but that's just me).

Aside - you might want to stop and think about why you have an email signature at all. They're pretty pointless.

The solicitors regulation authority doesn't think they're pointless. All communications have to state my SRA No, that I'm a solicitor and some other jazz. So if you've got to have them then why not make them pretty and professional, init?

You say that as if 'email management' can only mean a single specific thing. I 'manage' emails from a single Gmail account on my phone all the time. It doesn't hold any real meaning as a phrase.

Saturnalian wrote:

Gmail does signatures. Proper actual companies do use Gmail for their email you know so it's hardly a ridiculous suggestion.

Anyway, I now appreciate this doesn't work for you so it doesn't matter, but there was no way to know that from your original post.
