I took the plunge and installed Windows 10 this morning. It's pretty neat, very similar to OSX Yosemite. Has any one else 'upgraded' yet? I only really did it for DX12. |

Not jumping on early doors, I'll wait and see if DX12 delivers any 'must haves' but otherwise I'll stick with Windows 7 for a while. Common sense says give it a few months for the first few waves of bugs and glitches to be ironed out too. |

So the thought that it will see and actually use your processor properly doesn't tempt you in the slightest? 8.1 was really good. This is basically 8.1 with a better face on and Cortana and a few others. It's a bit tarty though I will give you that much. |

There are 4 PCs in my house (my laptop, and my kids 3 computers) with either windows 7 or 8 on them. I'll do mine, and if it's OK, then I will do the kid's PCs too. |

Yeah I did mine first using the tool. I picked update as I'm running a brand new install of 8.1 any way so it wouldn't have been too taxing to go back. After that I used the same tool to build a USB stick, but the option is there for doing a DVD too. I'm very happy with the overall look and feel. It's very slick. Not sure about the names though.. I won't be browsing on "The Edge" and "Groove" just looks like a cack handed Itunes. And I hated Itunes. |

I think it might be more to do with how quickly you "Reserved" your copy - I've got a few people on Skype (Not Insiders) who reserved it pretty much as soon as you could, and they've already got it installed - whereas thanks to my amazingness at keeping things updated, it took me about a week before I had the update installed. |

I've not got the notification yet but a check on my C: drive show a large 5GB folder that looks suspiciously like Windows 10. I'm probably going to lay off upgrading for a few months until things have settled down and curiosity over takes me. Or if I come home extremely drunk one night and think it'd be fine to do it in that state. |

I see absolutely ZERO REASON to dive straight in with this. There are already many reports of bugs and glitches and doubtless they'll continue to mount. At the very least just wait a month or two until the real clangers have been sorted out. Just because something's free doesn't mean it's a good idea. |

Upgrade is usual bug ridden MS shite, at least they know this and have built in a decent wind back First attempt the app told me all was good and to press install to start, after a couple of reboots the install froze so I rebooted, froze again so rebooted, this time it went back to Windows 7 Now the Windows 10 App tells me the update hasn't downloaded yet (so what is was doing the first time?) 10 mins later its downloaded and we try again. Same thing happens so I'm staying on Windows 7 for now |

I have it. The hack thing didn't work, so i found an install thing on the Microsoft website that worked fine (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/softwar ... /windows10) It's alright. Some things I'm finding a bit annoying, but it's not bad. |

I went through the installer too and I'm currently typing this on Edge! Amazing. Everything seems ok so far apart from the fact it hasn't recognised my wireless Xbox pad receiver. This was a dodgy one from China though so I'm not surprised. |

LOL you said that same stuff when I went to Windows 8. Doing so gained me a good 10-15% performance in games that support more than two threads so I don't regret it. Windows 7 now to me feels like XP. It's all well and good not liking change dude but sometimes you just gotta go with it because it's for the best. There's no way I would operate a PC with more than 4 cores or HT on Windows 7 now it's fucking donkey's years old. I even liked the way 8 is/was and 8.1 was good too. Some people actually like it. |

Reading online, a few people have had the same error code as me and it's just randomly worked at some point during the day - I guess I might as well wait a while before doing anything, just to see if it'll start working. |

One thing that I forgot (and now remember) that I dislike about W10 and W10phone is the prevalence of the 'Hub' - and the 'Hub' that is no such thing. Favourites in Edge should be a standalone item, not go to 'hub' then find them. People Hub is kind of like a hub. The Surface Hub isn't a Hub, its a big fucking touchscreen, and also there was also a Surface Hub app previously that wasn't a Hub either. If there is a need for a 'Hub' then it should be a single 'Hub'. Not multi Hubs. Hub. |

I really don't like where "This PC" is on Windows 8 or 10. I much preferred its position in 7 - easier to get to, and I personally think it looked a bit tidier. On another note, I just restarted again and it has finally activated. Yay!

I'm not touching a new MS OS until it's at least 6 months old. Even if Win10 is less shit than Win8, I'm in no real hurry. Hopefully this one will be as good as Win7 but with lots of improvements under the hood, and not too much unnecessary guff added. |

It depends what you want an OS to be. I just want to it be, y'know, an Operating System which I use to run other things on (the clue's in the name!). Now I'm not a total Luddite, I don't crave for the days when we had to install Winzip to work with zip files, and a JPEG viewer to look at Dutch anal porn, and stuff like that, so extra functionality built into the OS can of course be a good thing - but in essence I want an operating system to be fast, unobtrusive, and most importantly just work. As for performance boosts, properly using my four HT cores, and so on - yes of course that'd be nice, but I'm not going to do it at the expense of stability, compatibility, and so on. (I said over in the PC gaming hardware thread that I'd want to make sure all my old emulators work OK in 10 on a different PC before moving my main PC to it.) Moreover, outside my occasional forays into the likes of GTA5, my PC is mostly used gameswise for the likes of Hearthstone, Pinball Arcade, WoW etc - none of which are at all demanding. (And since I got the 970 I can run GTA5 at 2560x1440 pretty much maxed out, so 'extra performance' is kind of a moot point anyway.) I'll probably move over to Windows 10 within that one year window, but I'm definitely not jumping on board early doors, I'm going to wait and see what happens with DX12, and I wouldn't rule out sticking with 7 for years to come if 10 doesn't offer anything that makes it worth the switch. (In the same way I completely skipped Vista, going straight from XP to 7.) |

10 is far faster than 7 any way. It uses the same tricks that 8 does for booting and shutting down.. I wouldn't say it's unstable. The only issue I have left now is that Firefox crashes if I open a second tab. I can't use Chrome any more as my lady and I found it was terrible with our internet connection for some unexplained reasons lost on me.. But yeah, thinking 7 is faster because it looks like arse toffees doesn't cut it dude. 10 is much faster.. Give it time. Couple of months you'll be here waxing lyrical. Don't you have a second machine you can play with it on? |

I'd say you differ somewhat from the prevailing opinion, JC - most folks seem to be of the view that 7 is a superb OS, and 8 was a dog that was upgraded to 'decent' by 8.1. Still the standard rule of Microsoft OSs, that they alternate between awful (ME, Vista, 8 ) and great (2000, XP, 7) should make 10 a success

I was having severe performance issues in 7 with every PC I had (I7 950 with HT and a FX 8320 or three). And whilst at first 8 was very frustrating in the end I found that the only annoyances I could really mention were that getting into safe mode requires booting the OS first (a bit of an oxymoron if you are having issues) or to do it via a long process using the DVD and oh yeah, the driving signing was a PITA also as I used a couple of devices that were not signed (a LCD display screen over USB for example) and as such I would need to again go through the faff of rebooting the PC into non signed mode but you could not force it there all of the time. And that's it. Any one who balked at the front end simply didn't give it more than two minutes before deciding its fate. Thing is once you learn to actually right click the front end was pretty good. OK so every now and then you would have to click the window and go back to the app screen and click desktop, but for the hardware support underneath that was a pain I could more than happily put up with. Even my lady, who was a staunch ally of Windows 7 and like Hearthy refused to switch to 8.1 took to it like a duck to water after I built her new PC. 10 is basically YosemiWindows and I absolutely love it. In fact, it goes one further than Yosemite as I ran that for about six months and it did feel kinda playschool-ey to me. Kinda like in some ways it had taken a step back from Mavericks. But sticking to 7 now is pretty crazy given how old it is and how dated it is. Sure, you skipped 8 I can get that, but why on earth use something so old? We're all pretty tech driven around these parts surely you would want to use the latest and greatest and not be so damn stubborn about spending a day or two learning how to use it? honestly, for tech heads getting people to switch to Windows 8 showed me just how stubborn man can be ! |

I'm glad I upgraded and so far, I'm liking it but I only really use my PC for the internet and emulators so I had nothing urgent I need to make sure worked. I used 8.1 before this and liked that too but I'm kind of missing my start screen now but there's not a massive difference between the two. |
