Might as well get the fairly good and reasonably simple to use Malware Bytes too.

Since I upgraded the battery life on my laptop has been awful ~15 minutes awful. Is there anyway to check if this is s/w misreading the power signals or actually the battery?

Leave it running until it goes flat, and time it?

I can't leave it running, it shuts down.

There's sometimes some kind of battery recalibration software included with the laptop. Aside from that, no idea (that's all I've ever used)

Oh I see, so it's actually shutting down rather than just reporting 'you only have 15 minutes remaining'.

This link looks interesting, and mentions at the end having to have a few power cycles for a new os installation. worth a read though.

All sorts of fun going on with work Windows 10.

Surprisingly somebody made the decision to let Office 365 deal with Office 2016 updates, so that fucked Outlook for 200 or so good and true pilot users. There were some really helpful suggestions to fix this from the technical team such as just have your computer re built!

This Mondays grip was a 20 minute wait whilst updates installed.

Best bit is the process for updating, they will send an email out to everyone inviting them to go to some online system which will tell them if they are ready for Windows 10 application wise.

Then they have to answer some questions most of them won't understand about who they want to move their documents to OneDrive (IT or them) depending on that answer they may have to run some sort of copy tool.

Reckon 20% max of people will read the email and 50% of them do anything.

Still its the belief of my so called management that 100% of the users have a boner over Windows 10 and will be fighting to book upgrade appointments with the team from our new super IT service delivery partner who doesn't appear to have any idea what they should do next and is emailing me asking for guidance!

Have a plan to sort it all out when it goes wrong, but I've been told to follow the process, so doing just that and waiting :)

I've just loaded up Chrome in Windows 10 and looked what happened.... I got a little pop up from Edge telling me how great it is!

Also, quite clever in that I pressed "print screen" and Windows automatically saved the image to my Onedrive folder.

I had that appear this morning too. Plus something about the Store too. I'm hoping Windows doesn't make a habit of plugging stuff.

Looking at your screenshot, that 'Ask Me Anything' bar was the first thing I turned off when I upgraded to 10. I'd rather have that space for more launch icons :)

Yeah, that's the Cortana bar and I use it quite a lot. It's my new search bar so rather than click the start menu to find a program, I just search for the name of it.

CTRL + PrintScr gets the screenshot, puts it in your Dropbox and copies the public link to it to your clipboard. Can you do that with Onedrive, bred?

So Windows 10 now serves up adverts in File Explorer!

Mrs Hearthly has been on Windows 10 for quite some time and she's got used to it popping up messages along the lines of informing her that Microsoft Edge is much better and safer than Chrome, in exactly the same location and manner it flags up stuff that's, y'know, actually important and/or relevant.

She's also got used to it adding new tiles to the Start Menu and all that sort of shit, and she understands the deal overall with Windows 10 being 'free' so it's clearly not 'free' because you become the product.

However, even I was quite taken aback to see Microsoft start plugging One Drive in the main File Explorer window, as to me this changes something that's been fundamentally consistent in Windows pretty much forever, in that File Explorer is a solid, basic way to interact with the drives, folders and files on your PC. (She flagged it up to me as it concerned her, in case it was some sort of malware or virus, like a browser hijack sort of deal, (which it has to be said, she was fucking dreadful for in the pre-XP days), as she's been using Windows since Windows 95 and she's never seen File Explorer pull shit like that.)

It looked like this, but a UK version. You can turn it off with a folder view option 'disable sync provider notifications' but there's currently no consensus on whether or not that would then also turn off such notifications that you might actually want to see.

(If you just dismiss it using 'Not now' it'll also come back again whenever it feels like, apparently.)

I've used Directory Opus for Windows since basically forever. Not only is it a far, far better file manager than Explorer could ever hope to be, there's never any danger of this sort of bollocks.

I've never had that pop up but I don't know if that's because I've disabled OneDrive or because i have my Explorer windows set to the old school bare minimum setup. It's still shitty either way mind.

In terms of hours of productivity I've gained through using it over Explorer, it's worth far, far more than that.

Had some pop ups asking me what I think about features (when on my desktop)

I have OneDrive so maybe that's why I've not been bugged

Some info here on how to get rid of them

The things I use most:

- Batch renaming (with regex if you want) built-in.
- Built in FTP client that's decent (only criticism is that it's not multi-threaded for upload/download)
- Dual pane, which I use with the above for uploading files to servers - supports "navigation lock" so it keeps the folder in view synchronised between left/right panes.
- Synchronisation features for the above
- Ludicrously powerful scripting available to make a toolbar button do pretty much everything you'd never need it to do

And I use probably 10% of what it's capable of, if that.

Hmm. I don't really use FTP (because version control), but the batch renaming might be useful one day.

Can you set up shortcuts the same the quick access in Windows 10?

Had a play but couldn't see how to do this?

Like the 3 windows, you get with this, I'm in the process of moving music from 2 folders into a 3rd one which is my new library, have far too much music that I don't like as its other peoples collections etc. Was really easy to do with Opus.

Oh. Yeah, go to Preferences -> Folder Tree -> Contents, and tick "quick access" and the Quick Access shortcuts will then show up in the Folder Tree in DOpus.

Amiga Format gave it 98% . I remember telling Dad that we should get it because it was obviously the best thing you could have on an Amiga given that score. He declined, on the grounds that it was a file manager and our A500 didn't have a hard drive.

I've set up Windows hello on my PC at home, it comes at quite a cost, the webcam I use is a Logitech Brio costing around £180.

Aside from doing Hello its 4K and very good quality so we are using some in small meetings rooms, as such I was able to borrow one for a few weeks :)

Works very well most of the time, however every now and again the camera is not on at log in. Once I log in with a password there are no issues with the camera it works in Skype etc. What I have to do is go back into Windows Hello setup to get it work again.

Its a nice thing to have but until the cost of cameras drop won't be buying one for home.

A TV and a webcam wouldn't do anything. So a TV, a laptop, and a webcam.

The advantage of the robot is that the person controlling can, well, control it. So during the stand up our man Jim can and does swivel it around so he's actually looking at whomever is talking. The downsides though are many:

  • The base unit needs to be charged every day and if someone here doesn't remember to do that then your remote user is fucked.
  • You can't move the thing while it's charging so if it's plugged in you can remote into it but you're stuck with a fixed view.
  • The quality of the video you see at each end is dependant on the device you're using. So we get a decent picture of Jim from whatever he's using to connect but as we've got a really shitty old iPad as the head of the robot at our end I suspect he gets some serious pixel-o-vision.
  • The audio is shite. Initially we used it as intended with the iPad on the robot sending and receiving audio but Jim apparently could never hear what was being said so now we're all dialled into a conference number with wireless headsets so Jim can hear us, and we him.
  • You can only control the thing from an iDevice or a desktop with Chrome installed. If you've got an Android device or no Chrome then you're fucked. Chrome on Android doesn't work; we tried it.
  • There's a charging port on the head unit to plug the iPad into so it charges along with the base unit. The robot recently went on it's travels to our Bournemouth office for some event and came back with that port fucked somehow. This means that the iPad has to be removed from the robot and charged separately every day, which we frequently forget to do thus rendering the entire thing useless.

Even aside from the above specific issues the consensus is that they're pretty fucking stupid devices. Maybe if you had a newer type of iPad in the thing you wouldn't get the audio issues we had which might help, but I'm still not convinced that aspect would work well enough to make a decent replacement for the other options.

Am I being a tit in not being able to get Windows 10 search working as well as previous versions or is it just totally shit and broken? I've got all my files (mp3s, films, TV, etc) on a second internal drive but I've added each of those folders to the relevant Library in Windows to try and get stuff indexed. Even having done that though if I hit Start and start typing a search it never turns up any of my stuff which it used to do flawlessly in Windows 7. Installed apps come back okay but not my actual files.

Note that I'm also pretty sure I've done this step to add the individual folder to be indexed:

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1 ... emove.html

I've also done the step at the end to force a rebuild of the index.

Just seen your picture, that's the Cisco telepresence?

We put in Cisco Tandberg a few years ago which is similar but at the time maybe not as good, after 4 years we ditched them.

1 They were only point to point between systems so were used by a small number of people a lot between specific sites where we had them

2 They wouldn't work with Skype for Business very well, this was possible to do but global paid some company a shit load of money and they never got it right.

I ended up having to replace the 5 rooms globally, so we did 1 or 2 84 inch screens along with a good quality camera costing £4,000 and they became Skype rooms so to speak. Also put in retractable cable boxes in the tables and HDMI switches etc.

The Tandberg was not thought out well in our place, I found out during the replacement that the US has removed their system after 12 months as they never used it and stuck it in storage as some big cheese wanted the room as an office, so a 50K system gathered dust for almost 3 years

Latest big Windows 10 'Creators' style update being pushed out.

Expect new icons you didn't expect and don't want, adverts will come back even if you've turned them off, and useful IMPORTANT MESSAGES like this which is really fucking relevant when the battery that's been detected is a UPS and not like, y'know, a tablet or a phone.

Oh and more Skype integration as well with some PEOPLE AND FRIENDS popup that I couldn't tell to fuck off quick enough. Does anyone use Skype? For anything?
