Hopefully Logitech are aware and working on a fix then.

I very much doubt they give a shit about a seven year old steering wheel, but we live in hope. I think the issue is that Win 10 installs a second set of drivers that conflict with the Logitech Gaming Profile software, but I can't seem to get it working properly without that (admittedly old) piece of software.

Can you not change the Device Installation Settings (in System Properties) to "No"?

The upgrade made a hostile attempt to install Razer's 'Synapse' software on both PCs because they have a Razer mouse and a Razer keyboard attached to them respectively.

This is in spite me telling the Synapse install to permanently fuck off at the original Windows 10 install time.

Also, it bundled it into the actual upgrade process at one of the many reboots, so to the less wary it would have seemed like a Windows thing rather than a third party piece of software. I told it to fuck off (permanently) once more. Maybe it'll listen this time.

I appreciate Windows probably thought it was being helpful but both devices work perfectly without the Synapse software, which is notoriously buggy, naggy, and generally shit - hence me not wanting it on either PC.

Just finished the install, 40 minutes, It was stuck on 76% for ages but went ok

No, the present is Windows 10. The future is Windows 14 or whichever random number they choose next.

They've suggested there won't be another 'numbered' Windows after 10, they're just going to keep iterating 10 as the years roll by. (IIRC they explicitly said there won't be a Windows 11.)

Another idea stolen from Mac OS then

Apparently so:

http://www.howtogeek.com/248177/whats-n ... ry-update/

Quote:
Microsoft Has Changed Its Mind About Skype…Again
With Windows 8 and 8.1, Microsoft offered both “Skype for Windows” and “Skype for Windows desktop” applications. The “Modern” Skype for Windows application ran in the full-screen interface and was pretty flaky. Microsoft abruptly discontinued the Modern version of Skype a month before Windows 10 was released, announcing it was refocusing development attention on the desktop version of Skype Windows users actually used.

Windows 10 launched with a Get Skype application that encouraged you to download the desktop application. Windows 10’s first big update, the November update, added a few beta applications–Messaging, Phone, and Video–apps that worked with Skype. These are separate applications for text messages, audio calls, and video calls.

Microsoft has now changed its mind again and will discontinue those three separate Skype applications on the desktop. Instead, Microsoft will create a new universal Windows app version of Skype that will eventually replace the traditional desktop application when it has enough features. The Skype Preview application is now available.

A new feature in the Skype application will enable “messaging everywhere“. Use Skype on an Android phone or Windows Mobile phone and you’ll be able to send and receive SMS messages from your Windows 10 PC. They’ll just be routed through your phone via the Skype application. This feature was supposed to be implemented in the “Messaging” application in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but Microsoft changed its mind and removed the feature late in the development process so it could be added to Skype.

Has anyone tried the Android Cortana integration with Windows 10 yet? In theory it sounds useful to get phone notifications pushed into Windows Action Centre, but it doesn't seem to work for me. Possibly because the app is region-specific at the moment, so has to be installed via an APK in the UK.

Sure enough..five minutes after posting that, I find the setting in Windows that I'd missed...

Not sure if this was always in Windows 10 or if it came with an update, but I set up facial recognition at the weekend

Didn't take very long and it works really well

Annoyingly it will only work on devices that have a built in camera, don't know why as USB is initialised during boot up.

Had a quick look on the web and yes you need a "a specialized illuminated infrared camera"

I set this up on a Surface 4.

There are few USB cameras available that will support Windows Hello, a couple from Intel that are part of dev kits, also one coming soon from Creative called the BlasterX Senz3D. That costs £189, does a lot of things aside from just hello but still expensive.

Quantum Break runs massively better on Nvidia cards under DX11 on the Steam release than DX12 under the Windows Store version. Also doesn't crash and all that shit. Developer has stated there'll be no more patches for the DX12 version.

(AMD cards perform pretty much identically with both APIs.)

Where Nvidia and AMD cards are competing in the same sort of price space, the Nvidia cards do better under DX11 than the AMD cards do under DX12.

Hopefully Microsoft will just give up on trying to even get vaguely involved with games. After the GFWL fiasco (which has left some games broken forever, including our Saturday night favourite DiRT2), I'll never trust them with any games related tech ever again.

Can't see that happening any time soon, but I hope at least that externally developed Microsoft published titles continue to be granted permission to release on Steam at a later date. That was in the contract for nuTomb Raider 2 and Quantum Break, but those would have been based on contracts from before their big half-arsed push into PC gaming. Scalebound is the main one I am wondering about.

Well yes but it's been around forever and generally speaking there's no real alternative, I'm more talking about them poking their noses into things that are already done perfectly well, like game stores and game integration technologies - which they've proven to be both shit and unreliable at, on the PC at least.

The XBox 360 was good. They should stick to things like that.

Basically I will never forgive them for breaking DiRT2.

I finally decided to get round to playing Bulletstorm a few months ago. I had it on the 360 but never played it, and got it cheap on Steam ages ago. Booted it up and it no longer runs because of GfWL. :'(

It doesn't run at all? Gta4 uses gfwl, I expect that still works.

It depends how deeply integrated it is. With DiRT2 you literally can't get into the game by any means if GFWL isn't there. (i.e. Not even the single player mode can be accessed.)

DiRT3 broke in exactly the same way when Microsoft decided to shit in everyone's face, but Codemasters patched GFWL out of DiRT3 and gave everyone 'DiRT3 Complete Edition' for free (which uses Steam's standard (and far superior) game integration), but they said DiRT2 was too old for them to spend the time and effort on doing the same thing.

There are I believe replacement dlls available to get some GFWL games running in singleplayer, but multiplayer (which is what we wanted in DiRT2 of course) is gone forever.

EDIT - Here's a Bulletstorm fix for single player, for example - http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Bulletstor ... ows_-_LIVE

They are also doing a Bulletstorm remaster on PS4/Xbox One/PC.

Edit: I played it on PC but then hit a bug where it wouldn't load the next level so I stopped. I enjoyed it up until then though.

Edit2: There is a list of GFWL games here. To the best of my knowledge, any that state "SSA" can no longer be installed, and any that list "Multiplayer" or "Leaderboards" will have the multiplayer and leaderboards taken offline.

Obviously it never really worked well, and I'm glad it's gone, but it's a right mess for the games left in limbo.

After the latest round of Windows 10 updates I had an annoying problem.

I was unable to access any of the folders on one of my Thecus NAS via explorer.

The solution was to create a local account on the NAS then open up credential manager in Windows 10 and create a new Windows Credential that had the same details as the local account on the NAS.

This only appears to be an issue when you log into Windows 10 using an MS account which I do.

My other NAS already had a local account set up so was working OK, this is not only an issue with Thecus I found this solution online from someone posting about the same issue with a Synology NAS.

No, just use the built-in Windows Defender software, which will be automatically present if you don't install anything else.

Oh I see, so it's actually shutting down rather than just reporting 'you only have 15 minutes remaining'.

This link looks interesting, and mentions at the end having to have a few power cycles for a new os installation. worth a read though.

All sorts of fun going on with work Windows 10.

Surprisingly somebody made the decision to let Office 365 deal with Office 2016 updates, so that fucked Outlook for 200 or so good and true pilot users. There were some really helpful suggestions to fix this from the technical team such as just have your computer re built!

This Mondays grip was a 20 minute wait whilst updates installed.

Best bit is the process for updating, they will send an email out to everyone inviting them to go to some online system which will tell them if they are ready for Windows 10 application wise.

Then they have to answer some questions most of them won't understand about who they want to move their documents to OneDrive (IT or them) depending on that answer they may have to run some sort of copy tool.

Reckon 20% max of people will read the email and 50% of them do anything.

Still its the belief of my so called management that 100% of the users have a boner over Windows 10 and will be fighting to book upgrade appointments with the team from our new super IT service delivery partner who doesn't appear to have any idea what they should do next and is emailing me asking for guidance!

Have a plan to sort it all out when it goes wrong, but I've been told to follow the process, so doing just that and waiting :)

I've just loaded up Chrome in Windows 10 and looked what happened.... I got a little pop up from Edge telling me how great it is!

Also, quite clever in that I pressed "print screen" and Windows automatically saved the image to my Onedrive folder.

I had that appear this morning too. Plus something about the Store too. I'm hoping Windows doesn't make a habit of plugging stuff.

Looking at your screenshot, that 'Ask Me Anything' bar was the first thing I turned off when I upgraded to 10. I'd rather have that space for more launch icons :)

Yeah, that's the Cortana bar and I use it quite a lot. It's my new search bar so rather than click the start menu to find a program, I just search for the name of it.

OneDrive doesn't do all that Grim... You win this time but I'm sure the good people at Microsoft will be back very soon with some more features that no one asked for.

So Windows 10 now serves up adverts in File Explorer!

Mrs Hearthly has been on Windows 10 for quite some time and she's got used to it popping up messages along the lines of informing her that Microsoft Edge is much better and safer than Chrome, in exactly the same location and manner it flags up stuff that's, y'know, actually important and/or relevant.

She's also got used to it adding new tiles to the Start Menu and all that sort of shit, and she understands the deal overall with Windows 10 being 'free' so it's clearly not 'free' because you become the product.

However, even I was quite taken aback to see Microsoft start plugging One Drive in the main File Explorer window, as to me this changes something that's been fundamentally consistent in Windows pretty much forever, in that File Explorer is a solid, basic way to interact with the drives, folders and files on your PC. (She flagged it up to me as it concerned her, in case it was some sort of malware or virus, like a browser hijack sort of deal, (which it has to be said, she was fucking dreadful for in the pre-XP days), as she's been using Windows since Windows 95 and she's never seen File Explorer pull shit like that.)

It looked like this, but a UK version. You can turn it off with a folder view option 'disable sync provider notifications' but there's currently no consensus on whether or not that would then also turn off such notifications that you might actually want to see.

(If you just dismiss it using 'Not now' it'll also come back again whenever it feels like, apparently.)

I've used Directory Opus for Windows since basically forever. Not only is it a far, far better file manager than Explorer could ever hope to be, there's never any danger of this sort of bollocks.

I've never had that pop up but I don't know if that's because I've disabled OneDrive or because i have my Explorer windows set to the old school bare minimum setup. It's still shitty either way mind.
