XP only went out of support a week ago. Agree with your general point though.

Anyway, the most important question about Windows 10 - is quickedit mode turned on by default in a command prompt yet?

Aren't you thinking about Server 2003 there? XP was ages ago (April 2014).

Weird, last XP (not MS Office or whatever) Microsoft update was only a couple of weeks back, and it's only Pro running on an old laptop, not server. (But I think it was "embedded", i.e. pre-installed on the machine, which may make a difference with MS?)

Kov - yeah I know you can have USB virtual RS232s, but the archaic, proprietary comms software we have to use for downloading specialist equipment doesn't like them.

JC - sorry for going OT in your thread :)

MS are still releasing monthly Malicious Software Removal tools for XP, but that's it.

Quite a few big security holes have emerged since it went out of support, none of which are getting patched.

This is a complete straw man you've just made up in your head. No one's suggesting not moving to it because they don't want to "spending a day or two learning how to use it". People are wary because a lot of products, especially major OS upgrades, have issues in the first few months which is a fact of life. And especially if you're quite happy with the OS you've got it makes perfect sense to wait. I'm not because fuck it, but I totally understand why loads of people will.

You just called the UI god awful. Considering what most people do all day is interact with the UI, I'd say that qualifies as a bad OS.

I don't agree. If the functional aspects didn't work (e.g. files deleted themselves, applications would crash all the time, etc) then it's a bad OS. If it's got an annoying UI then it's just got an annoying UI.

No, those are just two different ways in which an OS could be bad. If an average user is struggling to do the things that the OS is designed to do then it is bad.

16 times more draw calls in DX12 than 11, and Mantle kicking ass too (even though it's pretty much defunct now, shame).

Just switched to Edge after becoming frustrated with Firefox. I must say, I quite like it. Hopefully it will remain that way.

Bit hard when you didn't have the discussion in the first place.

Any way, this thread was supposed to be about Win 10 but it's just being hammered now by people who don't use Win 10 nor want to. The fuck? That's like "Can't cook won't cook" don't fucking cook then.

People are talking about Windows 10 on a Windows 10 thread; it's perfectly relevant. You just seem to be getting in a weird snit because people aren't as eager to upgrade as you.

We should have three Windows 10 threads: One for people who like it, one for people who don't like it, and one for people who are on the fence, and would like to discuss it. Nah wait, that'd just be silly.

Sorry, for a moment there I thought you were my psychiatrist.

I'm not getting in a 'snit' (whatever that is) I came here to talk about Windows 10 and the use of it, not to say "Well I don't want it and because I'm that guy I'll just ruin the thread instead" (you know Hearthly, as you've been faithfully doing since 2001).

I'm not going to argue or debate with you over it because at my time of life I've realised that arguing on the internet is for wankers. You know? you don't earn a degree in it, it doesn't let you put your hand up its skirt and so on. It gains you absolutely no life skill whatsoever so yeah, as I said earlier whatevs.

I like it. I don't like how "Edge" does not allow Adblock yet and seems to be the only browser I can actually get working but you know? that's constructive criticism.

Hmm bad luck then I guess. Oh well, at least the ads aren't too intrusive and if I want to watch YouTube I can just use my phone :)

Have you tried reinstalling it? I got it to delete everything, rather than keeping the programs on my PC to get rid of all the junk I'd accumulated since getting Win7, so maybe that has something to do with it?

First impression, it looks ok. I like the mail bit and the icons across dual screens.

Not found any bugs yet,

I think it looks a bit ugly - I'm not keen on a lot of the design queues. I've only had a quick play so far and not found any major flaws, but some things seem odd like having to resize the start menu vertically and horizontally as two separate steps.

Argung on the Internet for 20 years was how I learnt to form a cogent augment. It led me to places like this, where I made friends for life, and it directly gave me my job at TUAW which in turn was a contributory factor in getting the dream job I do now. Don't underestimate the power of arguing on the Internet... if you're good at it.

Managed to get it installed on my wife's laptop using the media tool MS are providing

Its nicer that Windows 8 but still annoys me with its none desktop interface that I just don't want on a none touch device

Early days with the Siri clone but that's appearing to be shit, does nothing with the desktop other than put your requests into a web browser, looks to work better with Windows Apps, shame most of those are lacking.

We've got an HP Probook 6570b in the lab running a dumb robot. It's got a serial COM port.

We got it around a year and a half, maybe 2 years ago. We've never used it for anything other than running the robot so I don't know if it's what someone else would call 'good' or not, but it fulfils the role here just fine. It's never been used off the bench other than being quickly shifted around so we can clean but it doesn't strike me as being all that portable. It's quite big and heavy so I wouldn't want to use it on the go.

If you are having issues with the Windows update process for Windows 10 then follow the instructions here

http://venturebeat.com/2015/07/29/how-t ... ws-update/

MS have released a tool that you just run and it downloads the OS and does the update, it worked on my wife's laptop where the update had not worked for 2 days

Every new Microsoft OS is less compatible than the previous one.

I've got PC games that dont run on each successive release. Ubik didnt run on XP, Scarface wont work on 7. Plenty of other examples. Fine, if you played them, finished them, will never play them again and dont care. Yes I know about Good Old Games too before anyone mentions that one.

I dont agree with the principle that newer is always better, and you cant tell me that Microsoft giving this away is because they suddenly became an altruistic company.

But heyho, enough people queue up outside Apple Stores at midnight for The Iphone1234567 to be completely up-to-date and 'cool'. Some see fans, I see sheep.

From my experience new has always meant more modern and with technology that's usually very good. Microsoft seem to crap out every now and then, but around six months ago I decided for a laugh to install every OS I could lay my hands on (I had a 12 port Dell SATA card) and even Vista with the most modern updates was really nice.

Every one knows when a stinker is coming. 7 was fantastic it's just very old. Speed and stability wise 8 never dropped a beat for me it was just a bit fiddly to navigate but with 10 being the new 7 they've sorted all of that.

Doc. I thought long and hard about how to reply to your post but it beats me. Are you saying that you have no other redeeming qualities that people love you for? or simply that the reason people like you is because you are good at arguing on the internet?

Personally I would hope it was the former. Yes, one can meet and find friends over the internet (though other than my first disastrous marriage I don't normally partake in that sort of behaviour) and even jobs and so on, but arguing is not something people usually tend to find attractive.

I tend to stick to real life now, having had pretty much the worst experience you could really want to have finding things through the internet. I'm also happy with my friends, family and my darling lady :) so I don't feel I really need to go in search of anything on the internet. I usually find people tend to smile to your face, then once they are in the safety of their own home decide to tell you what they really thought of you. As thus that sort of human behaviour isn't something I go out of my way to look for.

Any way, back to the topic.....

I thought Vista got a bit of a bad rap, it really wasn't that bad... on a decent machine.

7 is still going strongly on 3 of my PCs. For anything newer, I've really only got experience with Mavericks and Yosemite. I quite like those too.

Yeah indeed it actually felt rather sexy tbh. I forgot just how nice and simple and clean it was. XP felt bloody donkey's years old and I wasn't terribly impressed with Ubuntu. I really liked Mavericks but Yosemite kind of felt a little playschool for me. Fast though, and handles multi threads with serious aplomb. Maybe at some point I will try building myself another Hackintosh.

And we're in. Everything seems similar. I was expecting to feel like I had just warped through a space-portal or something.

Make sure you set "Cortana" (sounds like an 80s car to me) to record everything you say. I wonder what else Microsoft allow to access your hard drive? Or will in the future.

The EULA and Privacy Policy are almost exactly the same as Windows 8 - the main difference being a slight rewording to show the "Windows as a Service" thing. And as far as I can tell, all monitoring has settings to disable it. (Which is the first thing I always do with any new device....)

Did I read Solitaire now has adverts?

Apparently it's now maintained by a 3rd party company? Not sure how true that is. But yes, there is adverts between games ranging in length between 15 and 30 seconds - not in the actual games, from my experience.

I don't see what the problem is. Microsoft need my details so they can serve me better with adverts that they're going to be serving anyway? I'd rather see adverts for stuff I might be interested in.

And yes, solitaire does show an advert at the bottom but only on the menu screen so far. It's actually a nifty version all tied into Xbox live!
