I've just been looking at the maps app and specifically, the 3D cities. Wow! That's pretty cool!

I've just been flying around Las Vegas LIKE I AM THERE! Great stuff.

So how long after installing Windows 10 do you think I should leave before deleting the Windows.old folder?

Good call, doing mine now. 19gb.

I'm having trouble deleting my Windows.old folder. I've got passed the Trusted installer rubbish but it keeps saying that I need administrator permission to delete the folders, when I am the administrator!

Technically you're an administrator. NTAuthority\System is the administrator. This information helps you not at all.

You're correct... It doesn't! :)

Never mind as I'm now using the disk clean up programme... Sorry, app. It seems to be doing the job so far and is looking to save me 20 odd gig.

So I went and did it. I can't quite believe that the only thing I had to reinstall were the NVidia drivers. Everything else seems to be exactly as it was, even the games installed via Steam and all other drivers.

That was written almost 3 and a half months ago... when did Microsoft announce the successor called "Windows"? From everything I've seen, 10 is the last version of Windows - period. With updates from now on akin to OSX updates, and you'll only have to pay for it anything when you get a new PC.

[Edit] I've had a quick look around, and I can find only a few things mentioning the "Windows" successor, and paid subscription (here, and here) both of which mention that Forbes article as their source. And as far as I can see, that Forbes article doesn't really have any sources of its own, therefore I am reluctant to believe it.

Of course there's an ulterior motive. Windows market penetration means Microsoft software sales. That doesn't in any way mean they'll start charging a subscription for Windows.

Here's a better link with EVIL MICROSOFT being OPEN AND HONEST about how they want you to USE THEIR PRODUCTS and maybe even PAY FOR A PROFESSIONAL POLISHED SERVICE. The bastards

So let me get this straight. Someone thinks that Microsoft is going to start charging for an operating system... Much like all the other operating systems that they've ever released.

The bastards..

I installed on a HP tablet that's getting on a bit now (2740p)

Have to say its better than I thought, right or left click on start do different things, one gives you old style PC settings the other the metro type stuff.

Integration is better as well, I have a MS Account for Xbox, Skype and One Drive, once logged in with this account all my settings come back. I like that once signed in the native photo app goes to my OneDrive Pictures and shows me those

A while before its on the primary PC though, next steps are to understand just what MS are getting in terms of data from me

I've finished decorating the man cave home office and got my main PC back in action, so I've been able to spend some time with Windows 10. I really like it. It's like Windows 7 R2. I especially like the speed graph on network transfers :geek:

Server 2012 has been doing that for ages!

I'm sure Windows 10 is a very good OS, I just don't trust it with all my emulators yet. Although I was round a mate's house at lunch today doing a MAME tutorial, and that was all peachy on Windows 10, so that's one less thing to worry about. (He's a ZOMG FREE THINGS upgrade tart whereas I'm a slow and steady sort of chap who won't be swayed by the flashing lights.)

Based on my encounter today though, I agree with the 'Windows 7 R2' sentiment, it's not like booting up into Windows 8 for the first time and wanting to die.

If I don't like it I can just stick the old SSD back in and go back to Windows 7

Had to roll back as problems with my graphics card being unsupported.

Will get a new card at some point

What is a good budget card?

Do you want it to be able to play any games or literally just output a video signal?

If it's the latter then the cheapest card that's got the video outputs you need. (That's supported by Windows 10, obv.)

If it's the former then the GeForce 750Ti comes in at (just) under £100, doesn't need any extra power connectors, and is reckoned to have about as much grunt as the GPU in the PS4.

If you can spend a bit more than that there are better options.

I still have issues with privacy and Windows 10

This is from their privacy policy

"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services."

This is completely out of order, they have no business looking at your email and or files

Might be worth installing this if you have concerns

Isn't that done anyway. With any email provider?

Not down to the level of poking around your hard drive, or by the sounds of it any other drive attached/mapped to the PC.

I can forsee a situation where some kind of all-encompassing DRM is fused in at an OS level.

In the same way that PS4s already refuse to play Cinavia protected content, for example.

It'll be like that, but for everything that's dodgy. All they need to do is give Windows 10 away for free to everyone first.

Finally decided to replace my PC so went to Windows 10.

Did the main build, drivers and apps at work then took the new one home tonight.

I needed to take out the SB X-Fi out of my old PC as well as a couple of drives.

Once I did this I put the W10 Machine on my network and turned it on

Was impressed to see it found drivers for my SB as this is always a pain to install and it also just detected my network printer ( a current Epsom home all in one) and set that up.

Did have some issues with the sound which I fixed by removing the device, also IE was crashing every time I tried to delete some folders in my favourites bar (that were put in by the OS) so had to get rid of these in folder\file view.

Over all its OK, still feel its a little buggy in areas though.

Edge is shit really, no Java support at all so all the admin pages for my NAS don't work. No doubt lost of other sites with Java won't work either

Use IE 11 at work and its find so kept to that.

More buggy fun, part way through extracting a film to my NAS, Windows 10 just drops the network for no good reason

Not the fist time hardware has just vanished, my sound card earlier on tonight as well as a USB drive. This is just since 5pm as well!

So after having to reboot as Windows still can't fucking deal with the slightest bit of file I\O without falling over I end up with some messed up copy of the film on my NAS, which yes you've guessed fucks explorer up if I even try to touch it.

So NAS reboot and we are good to go

Edge is buggy. It also doesn't have any right click short cuts in the task bar (like open a private window). No RSS support either.

The mail client is also so buggy I prefer to visit my hotmail account via browser.

There are some improvements in some of the apps. The photo one is good (if you use Ondrive) as it gives you a view and editing of all your pictures without the need to log in (need to log into the OS with MS account for this to work)

I don't sync mine to the Onedrive folder as there is 60GB of them, not worked out how you save a picture out of the app yet!

Also noted that the media app will play MKV, wasn't long before I had files that wouldn't do sound so back to VLC for now.

Had a play on the solitaire app, the logging in with my Xbox Live account was very slow.

Microsoft can fuck off with how aggressively they're trying to push Windows 10 onto PCs.

It did a completely unwanted background download of 3GB onto my daughter's laptop, which doesn't sound like much but it only has a 120GB SSD in it with less than 10GB of free space. (I had to use the disk cleanup tool to get that space back. Thanks!)

They've pushed out multiple 'Recommended' Windows 7 updates that have increasingly ramped up the 'in your face' aspect of the Windows 10 push, we've gone from an icon in the taskbar and the occasional small popup balloon, to a massive window slapbang in the middle of the screen with a big PRESS THIS BUTTON TO GET FREE WINDOWS 10 arrangement which makes an unwelcome appearance every time you turn a computer on.

They've also now replaced the normal Windows Update window with an UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 10 button, you have to click on a small 'Show other updates' link to get to the normal Windows updates, and this morning the only normal Windows Update being offered is 'Recommended' and looking into what it actually does (before installing it, because I don't trust Microsoft any more) is...... Install the Windows 10 app which apparently helps users to understand their Windows 10 upgrade options.

If any other software behaved like this you'd damn near call it malware.

The only PC I'm concerned about being properly infected with an upgrade to Windows 10 is Mrs Hearthly's PC, as she's got an Administrator account on there so it'll let her do it (she is under STRICT INSTRUCTION not to do this), all the other computers in the house Mrs Hearthly and Hearthly Jnr only have normal user accounts, and the upgrade to Windows 10 will fail if it's launched from a normal user account. (I know this because the bedroom media centre PC has about fifty eight million failed upgrade attempts logged on it, thanks to Hearthly Jnr.)

Obviously I have Administrator accounts on all the computers but unless Microsoft actually mind control me I won't be pressing the 'upgrade' button on any of them, but it's still annoying and it makes me want to stick with Windows 7 until it goes end of life in 2020 all the more.

Yeah, that does sound like pretty shitty behaviour on their part. That said, you should upgrade as Windows 10 is very nice.

I told it to go away and several weeks later IT CAME BACK. So I clicked a button and it went away. Took me all but a click. I should really upgrade though, but I'm scared. Scared of change. Scared of progress. Scared of Spider-Man.
