The "every other" rule holds

So many people stood up for Win 8 though as if they were married to it. It was trash.

I can't tell much of the difference between 8.1 & 10 as a casual user, except when I upgraded to Windows 10 things that worked suddenly no longer worked.

So, should I upgrade from 7? Is there any real point? I don't really use my laptop for much and it works fine, so...?

You're probably in the same category as me then, which is to say there's no compelling reason to upgrade at this moment in time, but reasonable potential for stuff to break with no matching upside.

There's still a few months left for the free upgrade offer, I'd say sit it out until towards the end of the free upgrade year, the more kinks they've ironed out the better.

Even then, the only major reason I'll finally switch is for DirectX 12, if that's not a draw for you then Windows 7 is supported until 2020 - if you like it, and it works, just stick with 7.

Microsoft haven't said that the free update will expire, they have just said that it will be available for a year. I can't see any reason they would actually end it, given how much they are pushing for people to update. It's obviously a free update because it makes business sense for them for it to be, not out of generosity.

Suggesting it might be a time limited offer (which they did) is a good way to motivate people to update, but I don't think it will actually be time limited.

Is there not a point during the upgrade process that your license key is assured but the install isn't actually done? So people can essentially get their license sorted but do the actual upgrade at their leisure?

The desktop side of the OS is pretty good, I just wish that they would let you separate all the apps from it on a PC where there is little use for them.

Mostly the apps are buggy and not thought through. There is a photo one which as first glance was great for me as if you sign in with an MS account and have all your pictures in OneDrive (which I do) lets you see your pictures without having to use the web interface .

All good until you try and share something and it will only let you do that if you use the mail app. There is no option to share if you use Outlook for mail.

For anyone still moaning about this (*cough*Hearthly*cough*) MS have revealed a way to stop the Windows 10 upgrades notices from annoying you.

There are workarounds which appear to be met with variable amounts of success. I briefly looked into it for Hearthly Jnr's laptop which has a Radeon Mobility 4650 in it (same GPU generation as your 4800), although wasn't seriously considering the upgrade anyway TBH.

https://community.amd.com/thread/185041

I may skip Windows 10 completely on all PCs/laptops in the house (keeping them on Windows 7, which is supported until 2020), and only move to Windows 10 myself when I get a whole new PC. (And just keep this one on Windows 7 until it dies.)

I haven't heard any feedback from my mates much more positive than, 'Yeah it's pretty good, works fine, just like Windows 7 did really'. (And there's a fairly even split between those who have upgraded and those who haven't, my position of 'Windows 7 works fine, I'll keep it thanks' isn't unique.)

Yeah I mean, it's just an operating system. Once the honeymoon period of "Oh this looks nicer" and "Oh I like/don't like how they have changed this/that" ends it's just something I pay little attention to really.

All I can really say is that (after some initial hiccups) it works as it should. Nothing terribly exciting, really.

Huh. I right-clicked on a video file there to delete it from my desktop machine and just before I selected Delete from the context menu my eye was caught by the option "Cast to device" which I'd never previously noticed. My TV (Sony Bravia) is on my network via wifi so when I hovered over the cast option it appeared in the list. I selected the TV and the latest episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine very quickly appeared on the TV screen and started playing. This is a 720p MKV file as well so it's not fussy about formats and whatnot it seems.

Also, from a bit of Googling on the feature, it turns out you can cast websites using the Edge browser. I gave it a shot with the iPlayer website and it worked a treat. A randomly chosen programme is happily playing on the TV screen even while I type this in Firefox on the PC.

Fair play to them, it's a good feature that seems to be well implemented. Of limited use to me at the moment as it's easy enough to just flick my PC to output to the TV but I imagine for people who have a PC and TV in separate rooms this could be really nice. It might even spur me to upgrade my parent's machines to Windows 10 as I think they could probably get use of this with their TV.

You can throw the whole desktop over to the to screen if you so desire. Just be more careful about what other tabs you have open.

How do you do that, I don't see an option anywhere for it?

Amusingly, if you cast from a page that doesn't have any video it just picks an image from the site and casts that to the centre of the screen along with some of the cheesiest music I've ever heard. Like proper 'theme tune for an early 90s soap opera' levels of cheese.

I actually don't remember. The setting was in the charm bar on win 8, so it may be in the fake control panel in devices.

I could have used that chance to tell Microsoft that, but I didn't because I was in the middle of working out fare horizons and was in the middle of a sum. And it's the freaking calculator app.

I spend half my life trying to work out how to get things to work out the difference between two dates. It's a lot more difficult than you think.

Only if you view time as a linear construct. I used to think like you, but after listening to the concerns of those with malleable chronotypes I have come to see how such views, and society as a whole, affects them. We must work to end this narrow view and we could end it by half past yestermorrow.

Looks like it's time to move to manual checking for, downloading of and installing updates then, or just turn Windows Update off and move to third-party AV.

All six computers in the house are now fully up-to-date with Windows Update as it is at the moment, and have subsequently been dropped down to these settings.

Going forward I'll review updates as they appear following a manual check, and approve or deny them based on how I like (or not) the cut of their jib.

As new computers come into the house I'll purchase them with Windows 10 (or whatever it is at the time), but for now we'll just go into Windows 7 Extended Support mode until 2020 (when I'll review the situation), or machines actually die and need to be replaced, in which case Windows 10 will invade early.

The original story seems to have been updated with this mealy-mouthed nonsense:
Quote:
Update 2: with Microsoft having declined to give feedback on the data, the Voat thread’s results are being disputed with the argument that Microsoft is responsible for only a small portion of the data tracking that is claimed. In fact the original post has now been deleted but the thread continues with arguments back and forth over the data. Where there is agreement, however, is that Windows 10 does indeed submit hidden telemetry data to its servers without making it clear to users – just not how much.

So his entire citation for the SHOCK story is 'you should be worried because there exists an argument on an obscure website between a load of anonymous people'. If that was a cause for concern then none of us would ever get out of bed in the morning.
