The Google Cardboard stuff isn't just for Android; iPhones will work with it perfectly well as well.

Also, those big phones that some people have really are just phones with slightly larger screens; nothing special about them. I mean, you've seen an iPhone 6+ right? It really is just an iPhone 6 with a bigger screen which is the same for the Android side of the fence.

What was that scenery drawing program that came on a AF cover disk? Was it called Vista? It would take hours to render a landscape the PS4 dumps out in less than a lamb's tale

I suspect you'll find a lot fewer Cardboard app on the iOS side of the fence mind, and the Cardboard demo app itself isn't all that brilliant. I can't tell for sure though because of course you can't really search for anything on the iTunes website.

Well I just typed Google cardboard into the App Store and a fair few games/demos whatever popped up including the ones that have been highlighted on here before. For the price I might as well see what you're all going on about.

I had a run through some other apps last night and, thought most of them were pish as expected, I'd recommend these:

InMind VR: a rail shooter of sorts with an Inner Space style theme. Notable mostly for being quite a polished experience and I'll be curious to see what the full game that this is a demo of comes out like.
War of Words: a very short but pretty and interesting little thing produced by the BBC. Essentially a VR visualisation of the Siegfried Sassoon poem ‘The Kiss’.

I also spent some time with the Jack White app I mentioned before and it's very engaging. Annoyingly though there doesn't seem to be a way to skip songs and the video quality of the first one, filmed in an outdoor arena in the rain, is by far the worst. If you can get through that the subsequent tracks make much better use of the technology and, weirdly, I found most amusement from watching the front few rows of the crowd and mentally slagging some of them off for being terrible hipsters. Also: by God Jack White's violin player is cute as fuck.

Oh, and I forgot about Zombie Warfare. This was an interesting one because it requires a control pad to play so I found myself in the slightly ludicrous position of having my PS4 pad (connected by cable to my phone) in one hand while holding the headset on with the other. It works fine because you only need one joystick and a trigger button on the pad and the rest is done by head tracking. So, a fairly stupid setup and my right arm was fucking aching by the end of what is basically a demo but definitely the closest experience to what I imagine playing a 'real' game on an Occulus would be like so good fun.

My headset arrived. It's very nice! A bit heavy on the bridge of the nose and tends to fog up pretty quickly.

Edit: It's the Nibirur model, I have discovered.

Short answer: Because they were originally a Japanese only thing based upon the somewhat larger character space required for text, which then got inserted into unicode. Then the Japanese complained lots when Apple phones didn't support them while all the other phones had since pre-unicode days, so they were put in on Japanese iphones. Before sometime being enabled on non Japanese phones sometime later while still maintaining the Japanese name.

Also: Emoticons was a shit name anyway.

In the UK we used emoticons for years, it being a perfectly explanatory portmanteau of emotion and icon. Then a couple of years we switched to emoji, which is a bizarre half Japanese hybrid of emotion and kanji, I can only assume. For no possible reason I can fathom.

For the reason I stated. The emoji keyboard on the iPhone, which took its terminology from the Japanese equivalent which had existed for years on Japanese phones - while we had no equivalent and used things like colons and brackets for the same task, and eventually used substitutions of those characters for pictures such as happens on this forum.

(And you've got the etymology entirely wrong. emoji = 絵文字. 絵 (e) = picture. 文字 (moji) = character)

Right. But in the UK we used the word emoticon for a number of years then we stopped, and started using emoji instead. I totally get why the japanese use it! It seems like a very odd borrow word for English though. Ta for the etymology clarification though.

Weirdly I was alright with this one. Got me a couple of times but I thought the jump scares were used just a little too frequently to be effective. Chair in a Room shat me up me more because of the darkness I think.

I've got a load of stuff I installed weeks ago that I kept forgetting to try out so buckle up for some more reviews:

Hidden Temple VR Adventure: a short but brilliant 'escape' type game where you navigate an Incan temple solving puzzles and trying to, well, escape. Everything from movement to puzzles to inventory management is done just by looking at stuff and it works incredibly well once you get used to it. The cartoon graphical style is even quite nice in a Wind Waker sort of way. Definitely the most fully formed game implementation I've played yet and well worth a look.
A Time In Space: short on-rails fly through of a sci-fi environment as a taster for an alleged full version the dev is working. Nice music and sound in general and quite pretty to look at; worth a go.
RoboBliteration: a shooter where you direct your auto-firing ship around a small globe avoiding enemies and destroying them. Controlling direction by looking is initially weird but becomes second nature pretty quickly. Sadly the game itself doesn't do very much and is very repetitive; although, to be fair, it's only a demo for the premium version.
Alien Apartment: another demo of an game allegedly in development and what will presumably be a point and click adventure. The explanation of the controls is needlessly complex but if you get past that there's a convincingly built (albeit very small; it's a single apartment) environment to fiddle with while listening to a nice minimalist soundtrack. A particularly nice touch is, when you sit down at the guy's desk, the picture frame there is in itself in 3D because it's the future innit?
The Black Mass Experience: another one from the devs who did the Jack White concert thing I mentioned previously. This time you're dropped in the middle of a very short horror film which is a bit too eager with the jump cuts to effectively build a proper atmosphere but is very well done and absolutely worth watching. They do at least pack a whole load of stuff into each scene so it would rewards repeated viewings to see what's going on from each angle.

I tried a few more apps by Jaunt, they guys who did the Jack White thing. It's worth nothing that for all the Jaunt apps you can either stream the video or pre-download a higher quality version and it's well worth the download as it massively improves the experience.

Earth Encounter: another short 3D film about a weird space DJ and the FBI. It's very silly, in a good way, and pretty well put together.
The North Face: Climb: another short film with various scenes of two guys climbing a cliff then parachuting off. Interesting stuff for the few minutes it lasts.

Cardboard Crossy VR is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: Crossy Road in VR. It's actually very well done, capturing the look of the original very well and the VR effect is pretty immersive. The downside is it's hard as fuck because from a first person perspective the game's a nightmare but that's an obvious consequence of the conversion. This is probably a good one for demonstrating stuff to other people as anyone who's played the original game will likely be amused by the change in perspective.

Lost in the Kismet: a short but well designed VR 'room escape' type game that's well worth a go.
