As with Cras, when we last did this the banks really didn't give much of a toss.

Urgh I'm really not looking forward to this hassle.

On BBC1 and BBC2 today there was Womens tennis. On 1 there was Sharapova, and she made the equivalent noise of doing a deadlift each time she hit the ball, her opponent was silent.

I put BBC2 on, it was also showing 2 female players, both playing in near enough silence. Why does Sharapova feel the need to make such ridiculous noises?

If you think that's bad, you should hear me doing an actual deadlift. Gaz heard the tail end of one of my workouts last week and the look on his face was priceless.

At the end of the day it takes a shit ton of skill and physical effort to play tennis at that level, if she wants to make noise while doing it that's up to her. If you don't like it, don't watch.

Dunno, I don't watch / play tennis. :P

I do know that when I'm lifting, my grunting / swearing / whatever seems to make a difference. I don't know if it's psychological, but if sounding like a twat is going to mean the difference between e.g. getting the barbell above my head or ending up on the floor crushed under a shit ton of weight, I'm gonna keep grunting.

No really, no.

It means that I'm limited to the matches between people who haven't been taught to do that. Because, surprisingly, shouting every time you hit the ball is something of a use of energy, and from a not getting so tired point of view isn't useful.

Mens matches? As above, don't watch them.

And yet the person who's dominated women's tennis for the better part of a decade grunts quite a bit. It's almost like it isn't as simplistic as you make out.

hich is why I specified "from a not getting tired point of view" rather than "as a whole"

Quote:
A recent study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research examined the effects of grunting in the performance of 32 Division II and III collegiate tennis athletes. The players engaged in a warm up, followed by six sets of tennis. In random order, half of these sets involved grunting, and the other half did not. Serves and forehand strokes were measured for force and velocity, and the players were hooked up to electrodes to measure muscle activity levels. The results found that grunting generated greater muscle activity, which translated to higher force output in their shots and ball velocity. In fact, the force of the hits increased by between 19% and 26%. This improvement also translated to an average increase in serve velocity of 4.9%. Even better, forehand stroke velocity went up by 5.4%. Additionally, the researchers found that grunting did not impair oxygen consumption.

Well, yeah, but I get lost at this bit:

"It means that I'm limited to the matches between people who haven't been taught to do that. Because, surprisingly, shouting every time you hit the ball is something of a use of energy, and from a not getting so tired point of view isn't useful."

He can only watch matches with people who don't grunt...because grunting makes one tired? Aside from being placed in the same sentence there doesn't seem to be a connection between those two things.

Assuming you're just using the Reader app and not the full version of Acrobat it's just intended as a 'read only' view of documents, if you want to actually alter the content then you need to do it in the source document that the PDF was created from.

'Brent' station? huh? Don't travel to Brent Cross, whatever you do - that's miles away from Wembley.

The overground to Wembley Central is often massively hit by the knock-on effect of the tube strike. If it is looking busy or the overground isn't running as it should, hop outside and jump on the Number 18 bus. Keep an eye on the little stop indicator on the bus and jump off at 'Wembley Triangle' or as soon as you see Copeland school. The journey should take just over half and hour in the day time.

If you do end up travelling to Wembley Central station (which is unfathomably grim) come out of the station and cross over Wembley high Road, get the 182, 297, 245 or 83 bus from outside Primark and jump off when you are outside Wembley Park Station. It's only about 4 or five stops, but will save you a lot of bustle from tryingt to get down Wembley High Road.

If it was just a fairly standard grunt of exertion I wouldn't be so bothered by it, but Williams was almost yelping words at one stage.

And I feel the same about the men. If it doesn't become a yelling competition, it's OK.

That this should be in the 1st world thread, or that they're slacking while you're toiling under the capitalist yoke? I suspect the latter.

Work hard, get promoted, then you too can spurn the proletariat with your nine iron.

No. It is poor management. What should have happened was a quiet "as we're off early, finish what you are doing and leave" as my colleague left. .

I had a long, multi-train journey into work, though it was actually quite pleasant. Then when I made it into the office the lift broke down on the way to my desk.

Cycled home yesterday, twerking from home today.

If I hadn't been able to do that I suspect I'd have stayed around work, got very drunk, and found a hotel/doorway to sleep in. Scenes at Oxford Circus yesterday looked 'fucking horrible', as opposed to its default setting 'horrible'.
