I found that once the initial project setup costs were done, ongoing maintenance net of other efficiencies saved me money. Wife stopped drinking for maternity and barely restarted and the number of nights out fell, or were of lower intensity (and cost). Add in the benefits (before they were heartlessly ripped away from me) and we were definitely net up in cash flow terms.

Neal Stephenson's Seveneves is the most Neal Stephenson book that has ever been written, so I urge you to steer well clear. I loved it though.

Well food isn't an issue for a good few months.

Clothing is part of initial setup but we could have got away with never buying any, given gifts from friends and family for the first 12 months. We gave away three bin bags of stuff that had never ever been worn last week. Fucking buying winter clothes in advance of the hottest winter in history for a child that hit the top percentile of growth charts for three years.

The most expensive individual items of clothes were the Beex babygros. Worn once each.

Part of the problem is that unless I'm on holiday I mostly read before bed when I'm tired and only do 30-40 pages at a time.
Any books where that might not move the plot on at all, or leave me struggling to remember WTF is going on isn't ideal

The thing about Neal Stephenson is that, somehow, he thinks Snow Crash was ace because of all the Sumerian info dumping, rather than the awesome action scenes and compelling world building and plot.

I never heard about this Stephenson guy before, but i was curious and went to check on Goodreads. The synopsis of his books read like a parody:

"In reality, Hiro Protagonist delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo’s CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he’s a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that’s striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse. Also, he was pretty much the first guy to explore the whole cyberpunk genre, so Y'know, Seinfeld is unfunny (sub please add tropes link)
