Oh, I meant to ask this question now people are starting to play the game: at the gas station you come across right at the start there's a note in the computer about there being caves underneath that the employees are using to store stuff but I couldn't find any entrance; did anyone come across anything?

I've not found anything as yet. I'm about 3.5 hours in now.. It sounds like they were dumping their waste there, though.

Dinner break...

OK, so I am about 4.5 hours in now and the time has absolutely flown by. I must say though, it's quite a difficult game even on Very Easy (yeah, I'm a wimp). I just came across something very nasty indeed and died about ten times before finally killing it.

Just about managed to escape after that, but heart was pounding and I have no energy and nothing left to replenish it with.

I only have one complaint but I won't mention the details as it would be a spoiler. Nothing to do with the game or how it runs, though, that's been very good and I've had one bug (camera went strange for a moment) and no crashes.

I'm really enjoying this.

Yeah :nerd:

I'm absolutely crap at games these days. It's mostly because of the meds I'm on they make me very drowsy and a bit discombobulated.

I'm loving it. It does seem to be a lot more difficult than the last ones, I've had my ass served to me by molerats.
The new ghouls are terrifying.
The chat wheel that a lot of people were moaning about isn't THAT bad.
The only thing I'm not sure about is with the guns, there's no degradation of them by the looks of it, they stay good all the way, so stocking up on 10mm pistols to repair yours isn't worth doing.

It's Fallout, it's great.

I like that the guns don't wear out. It was a pain to have to carry spares in the old game IMO. It was kinda fun doing the repairs though but yeah, kinda grated after a while and I lost a couple of the special weapons by accidentally fixing a regular gun with them :belm:

It is more difficult yes. Not so difficult that I have given up so that's good I guess :D

Conversely I'm having a pretty smooth ride of it this time. I got fucked up by a surprise Radscorpion earlier but aside from that I haven't died once. I've been taking it relatively slow admittedly and following the main quest path which tends to keep things on a level I think.

Well, after a fairly rough start with it last night I'd say I'm comfortably right back in the swing of things now and it's all feeling very familiar (in a good way). The desolate atmosphere of the empty wasteland with the very subtle soundtrack echoing away in the background is just brilliant, brilliant stuff and while I'm looking forward to the actual plot taking shape I'm wallowing thoroughly in that weird mixture of tension and relaxation that only Fallout can engender. I'll admit though that I am a bit daunted by the SPECIAL skill tree because it's fucking huge! With each skill having a number of base points to be filled in and then all the perks also having multiple levels I feel like I'm pissing in the wind when choosing any of them.

The Queen one? Yeah I literally just encountered her. She fucked me up with doing fuck all damage to her. Think it might be power armor time.

I guess it's because there is no level cap limit this time. This makes me feel that this is a much, much larger game that Fallout 3.

I started off really well. I am disappointed by the lack of Fuzion Cells though, but as mentioned for the most part I can get away with my vault suit. 30 mins tops for a cell is also a bit shit but yeah, not going to cry over not being in power armor. I think I did what I did in Skyrim though, and that was basically trying to rush through the main quest and I got to a bit where I just kept getting my arse handed to me on a silver platter. So I had to basically do a runner with my tail between my legs and have now found other quests which to me are just as if not more important than the main quests.

Every time I play a new Fallout game this happens. I try to do too much at once to prove myself and end up becoming overwhelmed. Right now it all just feels so massively enormous. Thing is, give it a few days and I will know it quite well so navigating it will be far easier. But yeah, it's daunting alright. And there's also so much new stuff to learn.

Weirdly my instinct is to ditch the power armour and leave it. I tend towards a stealthy approach so clumping around in it was actually just annoying me. And then I couldn't work out how to get out of it and actually had to Google how to do it which isn't endearing me towards it. I've now got one of the arms pieces in my inventory and I can't put it down because it needs repaired so I'm not allowed to store it (?) and it wasn't very obvious what I needed to repair it. I just wanted to get out into the wasteland, not fight with the fucking thing.

I'm about 3.5 hours in, absolutely loving it. I spent a good hour just dossing around near sanctuary once it was set up as a settlement. Mostly trying to find sodding adhesives for weapon mods :). I can see this being a fairly massive timesink.

The graphics, the design, the atmosphere, the sounds (rain on a tin roof!), all brilliant.

Don't buy a physical copy, you've still got to download ~20GB apparently to install it, so you may as well just buy it via Steam.

If cost is a consideration then its basically a tenner cheaper on Steam - assuming you have a typewriter to play it

If your going with the console version then its better to buy the disk since its around £40 and its £50 for the digital version

(why in 2015 am I still being charged an extra £10 to buy a 'code' and download the full game over getting something pressed onto a disk / put into a plastic box (along with a poster and some bits of paper) - and then shipped to me ?)

I do, but it's a game much better played on consoles. I have plenty enough to be going on with tbh.

I'll get the GOTY edition next year!

The production/delivery costs have no impact at all on the respective charges.

It really doesn't. I can only assume it's because people buy it anyway.

My understanding is that it's because games have an RPP of £50; retailers always discount below the RRP; retailers throw a shrieking fit if the digital stores don't sell at the RRP; and retailers still have enough clout to get what they want. Supporting this theory: Steam games are cheap and the high street doesn't sell PC games.

Having said that I've seen people in less enlightened gaming forums proudly boasting about only buying digital. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I can't believe Sony and Microsoft aren't leaving money on the table at £50 though.

No-one quotes digital sales on console, that's why. I think charts are still compiled from physical only, or from shadowy estimates of digital sales done by third parties.
