When the PS controller was designed, the symbols on the buttons were supposed to have a specific meaning. Triangle was something to fo with Angles. Most notably, however, X was reject and O was Accept. So it is on Japanese games. For some reason, they decided to reverse those two buttons in the west.

I vaguely remember hearing that on the ps4, it was set on a hardware level (So Japanese consoles would behave differently to English ones) but it appears not.

I couldn't spot an option on the menu, (although, as I wouldn't expect one - because there never is, I didn't bother to read every single option). I've got used to it on other Japanese games, so it shouldn't be a problem after the first couple of hours or so, based on the other import games I've played.

If I recall correctly X was accept, O was reject, Square was a map/inventory and Triangle was for camera angles.

Well, in my lunch hour, I beat up a vicious blue thing down a forboding path, and beat up the first boss of the game (First time. Having gone in with only one estus flask like some kind of mad man.)

I did not have very much health by the end of it...

Yeah, that be the Japanese scheme. It's fair to say minimal effort was put into the localisation of FFVII.

As I say, you get used to it, but it does throw you for a little bit when you change between the two.

As far as I'm aware, X and O were the other way around by the original design - The playstation being a Japanese console. X being a fairly international symbol for wrong, and O being a somewhat less international symbol for Correct. (Although it is an oddity they made O red and X blue)

So far (which is admittedly not very far), it does feel very dark soulsy. Plus, it teaches you how to kick.

See?

Although the tutorial does put a warning telling you to turn back on an optional path that leads to a certain amount of pain. Which is a bit more in your face than the warnings tend to be.

The Dark Souls tutorial had a bit explaining how to do a move that you can't actually do if you start the game as a dex build. Which is nice.

Well, reached the second boss. It was a rather tough fight to get this far. Reminds me of playing the first Dark Souls in that regard.

The difference being, of course, that I have completed Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Demon Souls and Bloodborne. (And also played Lords of the fallen, before I stopped playing it for shitness reasons) So I fear quite what a newcomer would make of it.

Of course, there were more than a few deaths caused by the roll button being a different button from what I expected (And one death caused by the gesture menu insisting on being in the way, and yeah, the cancel button didn't do what I expected there either. (Apparently pointing at the man with a big sword does not stop him from applying that sword to your face. Who knew)

A few problems that need to be sorted out too. Having nearly beaten a man who was causing me some problems, I rolled into a wall. Ad then couldn't get out and he smacked me to the deaths. Fortunately, Karma had its way and next time he bugged out and just remained still doing nothing while I returned the deathly favour.

Oh, heh :)

It does work on my build, you'll be pleased to know . In honour of you, I've been kicking bad mens before Killing them (and not at all to do with hitting the wrong button for a jumping attack, honest)

Second boss is down. Took a few more attempts for this one. There was much wooting among the 8 people watching me.

Unsurprisingly, given how long it's been out, there aren't that many useful signs on the ground. (and also, so far, no deliberately malicious ones. Culture difference?)

Biggest disappointment so far: Horse does not appear to be on the list of body parts. (I believe there's something similar, which they probably translated to horse - 乗騎, which seems to translate as mount from the usage I've seen, but it's not in any dictionary that I've tried (even the japanese ones). And certainly not horsey enough for my liking)

This means I've had to go around leaving messages informing people that buttocks are necessary.

So far, I have no up ratings on these comments.

Annoyingly, the only benefit of killing the tree was some kind of soul transmutation device. Which I can't use. And not enough souls to level うp。

Just for Ian and the like, some more videos of me killing hard things.

First off, what appears to be the mother of all crystal lizards.

It's down a path which had a tutorial note on it suggesting that I pull back. But at the time, it was the only path I could find (I was being particularly blind this day, apparently). It hit hard, and I was rather expecting it to be like the 1st boss of Demon souls (You're supposed to die, but it is beatable) so I didn't try that hard not to die. And I died, and nothing happened. So attempt two:

Which, of course, gives an upgrade material (Crystal lizard, yo) but no path forwards. Leaving me not quite sure where to go next. It turns out what I thought was a cliff was just a trick of the light.

And look at this, videos of the first two bosses. The first was easy (1st attempt)

The second took just under an hour of attempts. First phase is easy, second phase, not so much.

Man, only one more day of smugness.

A word of advice w.r.t builds...

If, like me, you go for a pyromancer, don't expect to go for a big bashy man with extra bonus flames, like you could in dark souls 1. Powerful pyromancy does require more than a glove now.

This has caused me to be fairly underlevelled for the whole game so far.

Boss to get there was a right dick. Not a particular fan of the timed boss idea in general, and had to spend lots to create a big bashy club that could destroy him before the room became uninhabitable. With that he were piss easy.

Honestly, I've forgotten it's there for the most part as I usually have a shield ready instead, and the arts on the weapons I use aren't the greatest. (reduce damage? Pffft.) the FP generally gets used for pyromancy if anything (flamey halberd joy).

Having said that, I don't know what the art is on my new smashy club. And given how long it can take to read what each skill is, I only know the weapons I use, so there may be all kinds of awesome that I'm missing.
