I hope they do. In 100 years' time researchers will cite us as a representative sample of what real people in the old UK did and thought about their lives, giving us an immortality of sorts.

Otherwise, all we are is dust in the wind.

To be honest, I've very much lost track of when I am being sarcastic and trolling in this thread and when I'm being genuine. Future historians will look back on this period of our history with amazement.

More likely just utter contempt.

Fair enough, I just thought because the 'staring at phones' thing is the usual jibe at millenials. That said I don't think we're distractedly sleepwalking into anything; once the referendum was decided I don't feel anyone has any real power to change how this plays out. People are plenty engaged and outraged, it just doesn't have any impact. :(

Mr Corbyn is accepting a customs union. No doubt this was sold to him as a chance to cause chaos for the Tories rather than acting on the country's best interests, but is a welcome step in the right direction.

Meanwhile, David Davis needs to read up on projection:

As for politicians, I would actually be happier if my MP had been a lifelong Eurosceptic, rather than a Tory who just switched sides for the sake of her political career. At least in the former case, they actually believe in what they are doing and I could have a clear basis for an argument rather than vacuous statements from the party PR office.

The SNP led a pretty daming debate on DExEU's affairs yesterday. The Tories didn't really bother to reply.

Tommy Shepperd gave a riveting speech. I wonder if this part is accurate:

Quote:
This must be the only Department in history that underspends its budget not by a couple of percentage points, but by 50% in its first year, and it has had to go to the Treasury to scale down its estimates of spending in the next financial year.

Jesus shitting Christ

https://news.sky.com/story/boris-johnso ... t-11270041

Quote:
Boris Johnson appears to have told the Prime Minister "it is wrong to see the task as maintaining 'no border'" on the island of Ireland after Brexit - and that the Government's task will be to "stop this border becoming significantly harder".

The major leak from the Cabinet's Brexit deliberations on the highly contentious Irish border is included in a letter passed to Sky News.

Its revelation has prompted calls for Theresa May to consider the position of her Foreign Secretary.

Writing to the Prime Minister, Mr Johnson also seeks to play down the "exaggerated impression" of "how important checks are" at EU external borders.

He also goes as far as contemplating a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, writing: "Even if a hard border is reintroduced, we would expect to see 95% + of goods pass the border [without] checks."

It suggests a significant downgrading of expectations about the change to the Irish border as a result of the Government's Brexit strategy and Mrs May's plan to leave the EU's single market and customs union.

As recently as November last year, the Foreign Secretary told the House of Commons: "There can be no return to a hard border. There can be no hard border.

"That would be unthinkable, and it would be economic and political madness".

In February 2016, ahead of the EU referendum, Mr Johnson promised the Irish border would be "absolutely unchanged".

Boris Johnson is like a shady used car dealer who has somehow managed to ascend to a position of actual power and influence.

It's shocking that May is so weak she can't sack him.

He's always putting these things out just before a major announcement, presumably to show to the true hardcore believers that he's still on their side, isn't selling out, and waiting to become PM. I think he's started to privately panic that not only is he being found out but becoming more unpopular to non-Brexity types every day. Like Mr Trump, not being liked is even worse than not being talked about.

In other Brexit news, their Lordships debated the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Bill , essentially an emergency piece of legislation to ensure that trucks can still enter and leave the UK after the Glorious Day*. Or, in other words, yet another piece of complex stuff nobody thought would be an issue until we started trying to untangle ourselves. Happily, or as happily as is possible under the circumstances, British and Irish trucks moving between the two countries will be exempt to avoid a border. It can be real pain otherwise, as the people of Camden know.
