No real idea what I'd do with it, but I really want this.

The engineering in that looks a hell of a lot better than most home 3d printers - like you I don't know what I'd actually make with it, but it's tempting....

I like the design (they haven't invented the delta concept but their printing head seems a key innovation) their philosophy, that 3D printers needn't be all that complicated and unreliable compared to many other things you can buy for even cheaper than their $179.

I'd love the cricket bat Collosus. Jesus, that'd make my entire life. Is there somewhere where you can request a 3D model of something? I do wonder how expensive it'd be.

That's where I think 3d printers are more likely to find a market - send your order through to a local shop and pick it up when it's done. Just like photo printing, you'll probably get better results than buying something to DIY and unless you are a real hobbyist who wants to do lots of Warcraft stuff it will be better value for money.

There's a sign in the window of a shop by me saying that they now do 3D as a service and a quick google found a business doing industrial 3D printing for industrial/commercial use.

Friend who has a 3D printer has pointed out that by the time it's arrived in December, it's going to be out of date. I fear he's got a point. NO SALE.

Machines that can make machines that can make machines. This is how it begins, people.

Does that really matter? I find it unlikely that other 3D printers are going to get down to $179 sort of pricing any time soon.

Have backed it - my RepRap Huxley printer sits sadly unused because getting the fucking thing going is such an arse I can never be fucking bothered.

Why wouldn't you got for a laser/UV one if you were shopping now?

I think he's missed the point completely. It's a bit like saying that consoles are pointless because PCs are always more powerful. This is the first time a 3D printer has resembled a realistic consumer device. Once there are enough out there people will develop models and techniques that work well with it rather than just binning it off and getting a new one.

If that's the case I'll just buy one in December when it costs $100.

Post subject:  Re: Tiko 3D printer

It's going to be $179. The $100 was a limited amount for early backers wasn't it?

Post subject:  Re: Tiko 3D printer

All that said I'm not pre-ordering one because I reckon it's a pretty safe bet that there will be a version 2 in fairly short order that will address some minor issues and that'll be the one to have.

I was assuming the price is going to drop.

I guess - although you did just spend 179 bucks on nothing at all ;)

There's some stuff I'd get from there and some stuff I wouldn't. Anything with any degree of mechanical complexity falls into the latter camp.

But then you could use it to make spare parts.

Just remembered about this thread. Did you get your printer yet Gazchap?

Not yet - they started shipping to backers in July last year but the first 100 printers had some problems which meant they had to go back to the drawing board a bit.

They shipped 1,000 of the revised models to backers late last year and are due to ship European-bound ones in the next couple of weeks based on their last update.

In the "old" days of 3D printing at home, that's exactly what you did - printed bits for a frame, and sent them to the next person.
