I want to gut my house and redecorate from top to bottom. It is a mess, but I have never done this before. What is the best way to remove gloss from Door frames, window sills, and skirting boards. What is the difference between eggshall and normal glass... Any tips? |

Heat gun! I did a load in my house and it was easy with a heat gun. Be careful with the fumes though. If it's old gloss paint, it may contain lead. |

If you're doing the whole house, do it a room at a time. If you attempt to do it all in one go you will almost certainly become disheartened by the very slow progress you make. With regard to stripping paint, evaluate each area accordingly. If the paint is seriously lumpy and tatty with old runs and drips, then strip it off with a heat gun and a decent scraper. Use wire wool to clean up afterward and sandpaper to smooth. Be very careful doing windows — keep the heat gun moving and be gentle, there's quite a risk of cracking the glass due to extreme temp differential. If the paint work isn't too bad, then a gentle rub down with sandpaper to give the surface a key for the fresh paint to adhere to will suffice. Eggshell/Satin/gloss are the same paints available in both oil and acrylic formats. Acrylic dries a lot faster and if you dilute it slightly by say ten percent, you can get decent finishes akin to oil based glosses. The only difference is finish, so eggshell is quite matt in finish like the surface of an egg, satin is somewhere in the middle and gloss is shiny. Get a decent primer, this will give you a good surface to paint on and also give you a decent idea of any flaws in the surface of the wood, or at least make them more visible. Cracks in walls, use a screwdriver or stiff scraper or a Stanley knife to rake them out and make them larger, then repair them with caulk if they're still small or plaster repair if they're larger. Damage to woodwork should be filled with epoxy wood filler which dries really quickly and sands down very smooth. |

I'd be inclined to use the appropriate primer/undercoat in that case, so white if you're going light and varying shades of grey depending on the tone of the top coat. In reality even if it's white and old and you're painting white over the top you'll need two coats at least. |

If you're doing some gloss work, don't go too heavy when painting or it just won't dry properly, apply a nice even but fairly thin coat. |

I got both nitromors and a heat gun. Nitromors is taking ages to remove all the gloss. Will try the heat gun on Sunday. |
