Costa is fuck awful. Although I must confess that their 24 hour vending machine was a lifesaver* when we were in hospital in Oxford for a week.

Sadly they seem to be on the march in south east London. Just gone past their catford branch which appears to have a footprint larger than Wembley stadium.

*Not literally a lifesaver. If Costa coffee was a proven cure for cancer I'd let them off. A bit.

Costa is ok, we have one at work , so much better that the free vend piss coffee that was the only choice for years.

Like their vending machines at service stations as the Starbucks always appear to be making queues rather than coffee

I'm not really any expert basically like a latte with the strongest shot(s) I can find

Post subject:  Re: Coffee

When Mrs W and I tied the knot, someone bought us an electric coffee percolator as a pressie. It used to bubble away like it was going to blow its top, but after a while it got kinda stale and we got fed up with cleaning it out, so we stopped using it and got a filter machine and used that for a while until we got fed up with THAT too.

Then I pretty much gave up on coffee during the Great Caffeine Scare in the 90s, apart from decaf (blechhhh), but then we started having the occasional 'proper' coffee a few years ago. Since then we've had a few cafetières and also bought a Dolce Gusto, which we still use, but I find I have to warm the cups or else the coffee cools too quickly.

Someone bought me one of them Krupps bean grinders for Christmas, so I use that with a cafetière, when I can be arsed to do it, mainly with a variety of mochas. Trouble is, I don't get through it fast enough so my beans lose their flavour, even if I freeze them between brewings.

Just another 1st world problem to add to the list.

Back to wine for a sec, just remembered that my sister-in-law likes to mix red wine with lemonade, or sometimes coke.

She mentioned this on a wine tasting tour in the Hunter Valley. The wine-pouring guy was horrified.

I can't get along with Red wine, I have loads of it as well from mixed cases I've bought over the years. Mostly good stuff as well.

I tend to use some of it for cooking using the year as a filter.

Also have some pretty decent bottles, some from 1996. Even have 5 or 6 from 1960 which are largely not drinkable but look interesting on your shelf :)

No, because it's 50 quid a bottle, so if you are tempted to do this, give the bottle to me in exchange for something rubbish :DD

I tried calimocho in Pamplona when lady T lived out there, I wasn't that keen on it. Tinto verano is ok (not tried the fanta version, bit curious about it though), and I love a bit of sangria on a hot evening.

On the topic of people 'ruining' perfectly good drinks, I had an Austrian team mate that would buy a can of coke and mix it 50:50 with water. Always seemed a bit odd to me, but hey, they liked it.

But if someone can afford a £50 bottle of wine and likes mixing it with Coke, they should. They shouldn't drink it in a way they enjoy it less because they are fearful of snarking wine snobbery.

Relatedky, I tried black velvet at Christmas, and the champagne ruined my lovely Guinness :(

When on the continent and with a car, I play the hypermarket price game to buy wine. The rule is quite simple: start with a one euro bottle and then buy a two euro one, a three euro one, etc until you've got as much wine as your car's suspension will take. Then when you get home, throw away the receipt and put them all in your cupboard. The game is for you and your friends to work out which cost one euro, and which cost 20. Fun for all. Plus it avoids faffing in the aisles.

Yeah, I tried a bit and its ok. Get a fruity red and some full sugar Coke. The sugar masks the tannins and allows the fruit to come forward on the pallet.
