"Don't play with your food" we were told as kids. And it was good advice.

But adults poncing about with it to 'create' something is supposed to be fine. I'm with you - fucking stupid.

Thought that was going to be a link to STAG.

Deconstruced iced coffee. Iced coffee cubes, espresso in a medicine bottle and sugar syrup in a syringe.

Fucking stupid.

See, I'd love that. Turns a simple cup of coffee into a fun experience.

A simple cup of coffee IS a fun experience if you like a simple cup of coffee.

What that does is turn a simple cup of coffee into not a simple cup of coffee. What it does is turn it into either an event, a task or even a chore, depending on your perspective. It also probably makes it more expensive and makes more washing up, or expensive in terms of consumables.

Food isn't one of life's greatest pleasures for me personally, obviously I really like some stuff and hate others but it doesn't bring me to the point of orgasm like it seems to with some people when they're stuffing their faces but I wouldn't be able to just have energy drinks for the rest of my days if there were any other choice. But what baffles me more is why the fuck would they call it "Soylent"?

Wow, that Soylent is weird! I love this though, "[Soylent was created] after recognizing the disproportionate amount of time and money they spent creating nutritionally complete meals."

1) disproportionate to what?
2) What does it taste like?

Is that real? You see, I can well imagine that there are people who would invent such a thing, but then I can barely believe that IT would ever be called 'Soylent', from a marketable perspective. It just.... Wouldn't.

I mean, surely.

Is that what joy in a meal (or drink) is to you, though?

See, I'm kind of in the same boat as Mark. I'm not really fussed about food as long as it keeps me sustained. Again, there are things I won't touch, and things I will always adore (couscous is obviously the best thing in the world).

But just because I don't want my food to be deconstructed and arrive in 12 separate gadgets, or pay someone hilariously painful amounts of money to blow helium through my peppercorn sauce using a set of bagpipes, doesn't make food joyless.

I'd do much rather have a picnic with just my husband and best friends, with simple cheese sandwiches and a few packs of crisps, sunshine and easy, carefree conversation than go to an expensive restaurant with twenty types of spoon, silver service, desserts the size of my thumbnail, or gimmicky science experiments served up to look like it is on operating theatre equipment or drug paraphernalia.

That's what I mean about a simple cup of coffee bring joy of it's own. I think there's far less joy available to you if you can't find joy in that type of meal or drink and therefore have to seek it in increasingly expensive or gimmicky ways.

Things like Grim.., and Craster's cottage cook, or the barbecue. Simple things, most joy.

It's absolutely real. Here's a journo who lived on it for a month. The company raised $20m in VC funding in January.

It was invented by, and largely for, Bay Area software engineers who think it's cleverly ironic.

It's one kind of joy. But then I have a high tolerance for whimsy. I like Wes Anderson films.

When in a cafe in Scotland once I ordered a shot of Auchentoshan and a slice of ecclefechan purely out of whimsy.

Wes Anderson is my favourite director and, well, I don't think it's right to label myself as I'm not sure how others see me, but I'm kind of under the impression that pretty much everything I like is considered by those I know to be full of whimsy. I don't know why, but they are just the things that make my heart sing songs.

You seem* to have made a whimsy = fun vs. everyday = boring distinction and divide in your summing up of experience, but really if you can fin fun in the everyday, simpler things then those things are just the best. Like in Mary Poppins.

*to me, or at least how what you have said suggests to me.

Wondering now if this was the best thing to buy.

I was wrong about the purchase date when I started this thread it was October 2014 according to Amazon.

I know this as I had to look up the model in my Amazon order history for some troubleshooting on the phone today

I also had to give my account number so looked in my settings including order history

I've spent £372 on capsules in less than 18 months! This is a good 1000 of them. That figure includes 150 ordered today and we have 100 decaf ones at home.

That's 40 a month and I only use the thing on weekends!

I can't think that I spent anything like this money on ground coffee in an 18 month period

That's 30p for a cup of coffee. If it's nice, that sounds kinda okay

You're drinking five cups a day, then? Isn't that a lot? Isn't it not surprising that it's costing you a lot if you're using it a lot? It's not like you didn't know it was 30 p per cup:

Lately I've been making coffee with two teaspoons of instant hazelnut and then a shot of Nespresso. Black of course, with 3 sugars. It's nice. The shot of espresso takes away the shitty taste of instant coffee and it's got a lovely hit :) If I need a top up I just make a shot.

Sounds a bit like how I eat tomatoes - I love the shit out of them.

I blitz them in a food processor with some garlic, a hit of balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, oregano and olive oil, then I spread them on a big dough base and then cover them in cheese and pepperoni, then bake the whole lot and eat it.

Man, I love tomatoes.

Strange coincidence, I do too !

Edit. It sort of opens up a debate really. Why do you drink coffee? me? I see it as a vessel to get a nice caffeine hit. To that ends I want it to taste nice, and my favourite flavour to add to coffee is hazelnut. I don't really care how I get there, it's the end result I want. Back when I ran my full sized coffee machine (a great big thing with an internal tank) I used to drink hazelnut coffee. The only other way to achieve that is to make plain coffee and add syrup, which is no longer possible. So I use instant hazelnut with a shot of Espresso.

Not for the purists but it gets the job done :)

I started drinking coffee after my daughter was born. I don't like long coffee drinks as they just taste weak to me, so I drank espresso with two sugars to take the edge off the bitterness.

Then I weaned myself off the sugar and enjoyed the coffee.

Then I went to wanky artisan hipster coffee bars and learned a bunch of stuff, and now I bloody love coffee, me.

Though only really espresso.

I drink my espresso 'neat' and not tampered with. Thing is, I was running back to the machine every hour or so and using 6 capsules a day. It got expensive, quick. I tried using "compatible" pods but the first lot I ordered were wank, even though they were Columbian and thus quite expensive (£35 for 100). I went back to using the genuine ones for a while but they ARE expensive. Worked out around 45p per capsule and six a day made it a rather expensive habit. Since then I found another company who makes better capsules for £15 for 100. They are actually pretty decent, too. They taste better than the compatibles I tried before and unlike the compatibles they seal in properly and don't piss leak. The compatibles just leaked and the catcher overflowed and hit the wallpaper and now we have a lovely brown stain creeping up the wall :(

I like having a cup of coffee next to me to sip on but I don't want to run my full sized machine (which needed constant attention to descale it (water here is pony) and clean it out all the time.

Two shots, Americano, black. No sugar or syrupy stuff. Double espresso after a good meal, with a glass of brandy or more commonly port.

Got a Jura J9 bean to cup machine this end, I just feed it Lavazza beans. The coffee grounds have made my hydrangeas huge and beautiful too. :)

Ooh, can I be wrong, too? Somewhere out of shot while Grim... is in your face? And I agree coffee is better than tea. Coffee adds a layer of pretension, but both are essentially geriatric drinks to go 'ahhhh' to, surely.

I'm pretty sure I could eventually drop the sugar in my coffee, tbh. Like anything else you can get used to it. I never used to drink black coffee. Then all of a sudden one day I make it without milk and thought "hey, that's not so bad" and now if I drink coffee with milk in it it just tastes like some one has thrown a large helping of really sickly cream into it. It really isn't pleasant.

I'm OK on espresso shots. I don't mind the very bitter taste. I guess if I really wanted to I could remove the sugar from my daily coffee and after a while be perfectly used to it. I know that when I go without Coca Cola (the real thing...) and then have one it tastes like a sugar cane spunked in my mouth.

When I'm wrong, I like to be as wrong as possible.

Basically all alcohol is poison, so all you're doing is getting used to it so it doesn't taste bad anymore.

Yeah I have to say I totally agree. That's how chronic alcoholics can drink mouth wash to get pissed even though the manufacturers have done about all they can to make it undrinkable.

I've not had anything with alcohol in for about five years. If I even put it in my mouth now it tastes vile. I remember growing up too thinking "How do adults actually drink beer?" but I did get used to that in my early 20s.

Oh I love alcohol. But there's no getting away from the fact it is poison. :D

I reckon I probably have about 5 drinks a year (though a few times recently I have had a splash of coffee liqueur in my hot chocolate). People always accuse Russell and I of having had a drink when we're enjoying ourselves (our wedding, Christmas, weddings, parties, etc) because we're having a good time, and people seem to think that happy = drunk, which we aren't.

I can relate to that. I've found my tastes have changed along the way. I used to quite like white wine when I was young, and hated red wine, but in my late 20s started drinking red more, and now I do very much like a glass of red.

I can't drink white wine now, it's yucky. I think it has a lot to do with a..... youthful accident... where I drank a whole bottle of strong, cheap white wine very very quickly :spew:

This might be a stupid question, but have you tried different types of wine?

I can't stand most white wines (or red wines) and Pinot Grigio rosé wines are just as bad, but the "sweet" rosé I can neck down like it's made from Coke.
