I cried at the music at the end of 'In the Night Garden' once.

I was a bit ill and feeling miserable beforehand. :metul:

Oh.. That reminds me. There's a programme on Cbeebies called Old Jacks Boat. It stars Bernard Cribbins (amongst others) who is an old sailor who walks through his town and has a chat with his co stars before going onto his boat to tell a lovely story. I think you'll agree that Cribbins is brilliant and tells a fantastic story.

The Christmas episode featured Bernard walking through his town asking his friends if they can make the annual carol concert. They all say that they're busy so a forlorn Bernads gets to his boat and tells his story. This story is about himself as a young man and how he comes to get married to Sailor Sue. We haven't seen Sailor Sue before and we haven't seen her since. It's a lovely story of how she proposes to him and he didn't see it coming. It finishes with Bernard looking at the camera, with a tear in his eye saying "I miss Sailor Sue every single day"

Then his friends all start singing carols outside his boat and they all say that they miss her too.

The wife and I were in floods of tears at this. It was written by Russell T Davies and It was beautiful. It must have been totally lost on the children it was aimed at.

that sounds excellent, will look out for it at xmas.

And it reminded me of Steve Coogan's Sunshine, which left me and my wife in floods of tears. It reminded me because i thought that starred Bernard Cribbins too. Turns out it's someone called Bernard Hill. Who I've spent years thinking is Bernard Cribbins. And they look pretty similar. Funny old world, eh?

This one?

Warning it is only the end of the episode (can't find the full ep on youtube or vimeo)

And yes it had both my better half and myself complaining the room was dusty....

That's the one! They've shown it two years in a row now and both times, I've just happened to be cutting onions while watching it.

I'd just like to point out that none of you actually ever answered the question in the first post.

This was about silly things that made you cry, whereas I think that pretty much every single post here is either understandably heart-wrenching or made to tug on the emotional strings (I saw that Kiwi short a few years ago. I'll never watch it again. Gosh, even thinking it about it as I write this has made me cry. Also, I had never seen the 'Pink Ladies' advert, so I looked for that... thanks, Grim...! :'( )

Anyway, I like that a fair few of you are a soppy lot. sometimes bravado and internet personas can make everyone seem so tough and angry, I like that most people are real underneath.

I'm trying to chill out at work with a biscuit and a cup of tea, so I put some music on.

so, me and Puff The Magic Dragon, we're having a great time until he sadly slips into his cave.

Little Jackie Paper. What a shit. I can't believe he made Puff's scales fall off. Like Rain. Whyyyyyy? He gave puff a skin condition. Horrible little git.

Anyway, it makes me cry. Shouldn't listen to it in the office, really.

Don't try and justify it, there is a reason the spoiler tags exist, please use them. Especially in a thread not even vaguely related to the film.

There has to be a cut off at some point, though. There will be a tension between ease of discussion and spoiling something for someone. otherwise whole things will be in spoiler tags.

I read of a character in a series I had been watching dying, but as it was at most 11 years after broadcast, I couldn't reasonably expect to be protected from that knowledge, otherwise it gets ridiculous.

In this case, the dvd of guardians has been out since November, so maybe 6 months is a little fine. A year after a dvd release isn't unreasonable to not use spoilers.

I think a modicum of common sense and balance is needed when it comes to using the spoiler tags, it seems to work ok 9 The Walking Dead topic where it seems 48 hours is decent to not tag plot things. Maybe we should think about it a bit more as Game of Thrones starts again soon.

If I'm talking to someone, I generally check whether they've seen something before revealing plot points such as the death of a character, regardless of how old it is. Because, you know, consideration towards your audience.

The spoiler tag is essentially the same thing with a slightly different mechanism.

But, there comes a point in time where you know it is a toboggan, she's a he, and he is his father without seeing the film. It becomes general knowledge. It isn't really possible, after an amount of time, to not know this stuff. in a media such as this, there are going to be references to things. It is inevitable.

The point I am trying to make, I guess, is "after what period of time does it become not reasonable to be annoyed about spoilers?". There is consideration for others and it is done very well here, but spoiler tags for everything, ever, is too much in one direction. There has to be a point in time where their use isn't strictly necessary. It is unrealistic to expect to be insulated from knowledge of, say, a film's contents, indefinitely. And I think that after a reasonable period of time, it isn't unreasonable to not use spoiler tags when discussing things.

Except IRL if you started talking about the plot of a film I hadn't seen yet, I'd either ask you to stop, or I'd leave the room until you had finished. You don't have the luxury of that on the internet. You can't unring the bell.

That is the danger with the territory, though. You must expect to have some things revealed when reading the internet. generally care is taken to avoid this here, and here is very good, but it will happen. a blanket use of spoiler tags isn't practical, so as time passes the hands of finding out something by accident increases.

The expectation of a spoiler free reading experience is unreasonable, i think, but cate is taken to mitigate this as much as possible when it concerns new stuff but older stuff cannot be reasonably be expected to be spoilers all the time.

It's not so much a case of asking, because that doesn't work on forums, as giving sone kind of warning of spoilers.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!

I was out with my son in his trike the other day, he was so happy to be out and kept excitingly shouting and waving at everybody we went past

It did make me sad for a little bit that he is so innocent and thinks that everybody he comes across will love him as much as his parents do.

Sadly that's not the case in the world as we know.

Shortly after I thought how nice it must be to have that positive innocent view of the world.
