It's not a case of "not bothering" I'm terrified of new social interactions with large groups of unknown people. It's more than simple anxiety. I'd love to be massively outgoing but it's just outside my capacity right now.

Plus I had more than enough stuff going on at the time of the last cottage, so please, don't simplify it down to a lack of interest. When you've stuck around a place like this long enough you think if virtual names as friendly folk that'd you'd like to be real world friends with. Hell, I could do with a few friends in my isolated little world. So, y'know, have a little heart, aye?

Post subject:  Re: IT. IS. TIME. (for BXBQ5)

I promising you, Saturnalian, when I first met most of these guys I was barely able to function in any kind of social way. I'm not putting myself down, but I'd been through some difficulties and massive upheaval, and I was scared of literally everything and everyone. I was undergoing a lot of counselling and had been told that I would be taken advantage of as I was naive to the point of unable to cope and survive. I tilted a bit and then basically didn't care what happened, but once I calmed down I went along and met everyone, all at once.

Yes, it was a bit :blown: and with what might have seemed like little escape, as I went to the cottage, but nobody made a big deal of it... there was immediate acceptance and people here understood enough to let me lead how comfortable I was - whether I put myself in the centre of the action, stayed outside on the periphery... all of those things were OK, and probably over the course of the weekend I did each of those things as I came to terms with the biggest group of people I had been amongst in about 10 years.

I'm not trying to convince you to go: only you will know when (or if) you are going to be ready for that - but if you ever do then just know that you will not find a more accepting bunch of people of who you are (or who you are on that day, if it is variable). I'm not sure where you are based, but if you were near by any of us, many would be happy to meet for a pizza or whatever, or if near something like the barbecue or cottage, one of us could pick you up en route, giving you time to just ease in, and then again, you could sit with one or two on te periphery for some or all of the time: you don't have to head-dive in.

Never any pressure, but folks would love to meet you, and from probably the most nervous person that many here would have ever met at the time, I can promise you that you will not be hounded, judged or crowded x x

:this:

And this isn't a bad way to take a gamble. Grab a pack of burgers and a sleeping bag (possibly a tent if there's not enough room in the house anymore?), as much to drink as you think you might need (plus maybe a bit more), and turn up/blag a lift.
By all means have an escape plan if you think we're all dicks (most of us, yes, but not all), but worst case scenario is you wasted your weekend with a bunch of cunts from the internet, best case scenario is you end up wasting a lot more weekends with a bunch of cunts from the internet. Or is it the other way round?
