I'd literally never heard a word about Guacamelee! before I saw a review this morning but it looks pretty good. Metroidvania platformer with charm and humour apparently.
... *wibble wobble wibble wobble*
He seems to know his stuff, so I've given it a punt, even without a trial. And y'know what, I'm bloody in love with it already. It's Metroidvania and Shadow Complex et all but with cartoon luchadores.
You can tell from the video above that it looks great, but they've done a cracking job on the tooonage; all Mexican and horns and stuff. The music kinda reminds me of the mario or sonic games, all cheery and lovely in the background. The kind of music that doesn't annoy you even when you've been in an area searching for a while.
It's a real delight to play. Really! There's also some tricky platforming and button combo mashing that'll test your finger dexterity to the max so it's not a piece of piss, even though you'll be crashing through it as it's so ace. I was only going to have 30 minutes on it but I've bodged that up and been on it an hour longer than I should.
It's old skool gaming, no doubt, and it's just as compulsive as Shadow Complex was but without the shooty pew pew. Shame this Metroid style hasn't been successfully copied more often over the years. It's bags of fun.
Really, really ace so far. I've just been turned into a chicken.
I don't know the guys who made this but it's got some cool references to other games dotted about. There's even one reference to Journey which was pretty fun.
Plus, if this is their first commercial release it's commendably polished and an utterly solid build. Very slick and awesome.

Do you play a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world?
The Internet says you're right. I've got a feeling one can play on the Vita and one on the PS3. You get a free Vita version with the PS3 download incidentally.
Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition Announced "Coming soon" to Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, and Wii U.
Developer DrinkBox is bringing a new digital version of Guacamelee to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition is "coming soon." Similar to the Gold Edition on PC, it bundles all previous DLC into one game and expands the original story with new levels and boss battles. Playable characters will also receive new abilities in the updated version of the awesome 2D action/platformer. You can check out some of the new skills in the announcement trailer below.
I ask this because most metroidvanias fail to be anywhere as good as the Castlevanias-metroidvanias. The only other great game of this genre that i played was valdis story. Dust bored me to tears. Cave Story is beyond horrible, i don't know how it managed to be so successful.

I really liked it - played about 3/4's of the way through on steam and finished it on the Vita
The ability blocks are pretty clear and separate out the sections (rather than being hidden around) and the world map / statues to let you warp around make it just about always clear where you want to go - however it does have a few difficulty spikes through the game (some very precise platforming required near the end and the 2nd to last boss fight is something i just grinded my way through until the right set of circumstances let me get past it).
If you've not played it before then its worth a look at least (there will be demos of it) and there may even still be a 'free' key for it in the free section on here as it was part of the last humble bundle
I enjoyed it up a point but did find it very difficult in places (both in the platforming and the combat sides) so gave up on it relatively early on. Obviously YMMV depending on your appetite for such things.
I finished it cause (a) I'm awesome, (b) the game is awesome and (c) I'm not a quitter. But you don't need to be a quitter like these pansies above cause it's so ace that you'll want to finish it. Like I did, cause (a) I'm awesome, (b) the game is awesome and (c) I'm not a quitter etc...

I'm not sure your side of the grass is much greener cf. you grinding through miserable shit like Dead Space 3. There are more than enough games out there that no one really needs to spend time on one they're not actually enjoying; a lesson I've only learned myself in the last six or so months.
Dead Space isn't bad per se it's just poor by comparison to the previous games, which I rate highly, and marred by modern gaming tropes.
Guacamelee isn't. It's fab throughout - graphics, sound, the map, the characters, the difficult challenge etc etc. It's a gamers game and replete with throwbacks to the metroid games but in a fun Mexican wrestling stylee.
I don't know if this is going to be interesting enough to have its own thread ... YET ... but those guys who did this are now doing not another this but this: http://youtu.be/eyOcYpELq7A
Which is a PS Vita game! *Collapses*
Anyway, the graphics are similar to Guacamelee in style by the looks of it but it's a First Person RPG Dungeon Crawler. Or FPRPGDC of course. Looks, erm, natty? That's probably as much as you can say about it at the minute.
