Super-simple game setup: Some mafia, an SK, some villagers.

Once the game starts and the roles are assigned, villagers pay £2 each, mafia pay £3 each and the SK pays 50p.

At the end of the game, the surviving members of the winning team get the pot. It's up to them if they want to share it with the dead members.

All night actions / results could be documented in the dead thread, to make sure the GM didn't fudge the results (the usernames would have to be anonymised to stop people playing the game from just checking the thread, of course).

SK should put in more, but pay out based not on winning but on kills. 25p for a townie, 75p for a mafia, or somesuch, with the money removed from the pot before the winning team collect.

yeah, each death triggers a movement of a percentage of the pool into the killer (or town's pool if they strung them up during the day)

So if there were 4 mafia and the 10 town managed to lynch one of them, the mafia would lose a quarter of the pot. But when the mafia go killing at night, they get 1/10th of the towns pot. Etc.

The only thing there is if the town lynches a townie than I'm not sure what would happen - the money would go into a "lynch" pot that goes to the eventual winners, I guess.

It stays with town, they get all money from the lynch.

I would say the dead should get a share of their team's spoils. Otherwise it would lead to a game where people don't take risks.

Maybe if we started playing in a casino, but for a low-stake game like this surely it's close enough?

I think your original idea sounded simpler. To be honest, I'd simplify it further still, say £2.50 per person, regardless of role. Assign roles randomly after everyone has paid to join. That way the role assignment (and likelihood of winning) is down to luck, as it is in any mafia game.

Then just let the winning alive members split the pot at the end, decide if they want to share it with their dead comrades if you wish.

You should have in game post restrictions and purchases that mean you're only allowed to post once every hour unless you pay for extra posting rights. That sounds like a way to ruin it.

A side issue of any buyin/payout mechanic is that it raises the possibility of non-role defined alliances. So the SK could offer a townie a share of his pot for distracting attention, for example.

I don't see why we couldn't have extra-game thread communication in some circumstances, if not all. It already is a key feature for the role-defined alliances.

Also, there is potential for mischief and misleading to be had, which would also be fun.
