So did Doom for that matter, and that has to be the best video game ever made.

Unless you play it on the easier difficulties.

And so we come full circle.

This was my first argument on Beex! Dimrill claimed, in his own special way, that playing any game on easier difficulties meant you somehow weren't doing it right. Good to see someone carrying on that legacy of talking utter balls.

No.

Just "sometimes", like with Dead Rising 3.

But the timer made me despise DR 1&2, so it surely suits different people differently, meaning that making it an option is a good choice?

Nowt wrong with the timer. It added a dynamic and tension to a game that might otherwise lack any.

Im just trying to imagine what would happen if you had no timer: you end up faffing around, get bored of faffing around, and then finish every side quest and main mission and discover that dragging 20-30 NPC's from one area back to the start is actually, very fucking boring.

The gatekeepers of gaming have spoken. Only those with infinite time and patience should be able to enjoy them.

It reminds me of Perkies getting irate about Turn 10 adding the rewind function in Forza. Just don't use it - how does it affect your enjoyment of the game?

I got stuck on the Xbox 360 version a long time ago, and never got back to it. As it turns out, I was only a couple of screens away from the end. All I had to do was activate something I didn't realize could be activated in order to move on to the final section. Amazing what such a little thing as an extra checkpoint can do to nudge you in the right direction by preventing you from overthinking things.

72. Sunset: The latest and, if their recent tantrum is to be believed, the final Tales of Tales game which has you playing a sort of housemaid for an important figure in the political landscape of a South American country teetering on revolution. You've got an in-game hour each day to spend in your boss's house either carrying out the list of chores he leaves or just doing your own thing; with other optional tasks to be discovered as you explore the house. The plot of the revolution plays out via a combination of your character's musing and notes that you and your employer leave for each other. The latter allow you to develop a relationship with the unseen Ortega and depending on the responses you choose this can be romantic in nature. So, a novel idea that's mostly well implemented but it suffers from ToT's usual refusal to explain themselves very well. It took me a while to even realise that most of the actions have two different variations you can choose from because getting the cursor to switch between the options is often a total fucking pain in the arse. Similarly, you can apparently encourage you character to keep a diary to flesh out the plot if you sit in a particular chair which I don't think was ever explained (or, if it was, I was able to miss it entirely) and I only even realised when poking around in the options after finishing the game. The visuals and audio are general very good, though there's hitches in the performance that affected me quite badly. If you like this kind of indie weirdness in general, and you have a high tolerance for pretension, then this is worth looking at but it's definitely a very flawed thing.

Not entirely true. Resident Evil 4 is really clever in that it will adjust the difficulty of the game as you play it, depending on how good you are.

There's some speed run videos where they'll purposely mess up a QTE to make the next section easier to get through.

Oh yeah, 21 years, 1 month, 1 week and 1 day after it was released... I've finally completed Donkey Kong on the Gameboy.

A very brief free game on Steam that shows the different perception of crossing the road as a child, an adult and an old man. Looks nice with some good music. Glad I didn't pay for it though, as it's super short.

When dashing you can change direction at will so each room is basically a frantic attempt to navigate your way through before the time runs out or something kills you. Short, free and good fun.

I was always very skeptical of this game despite all the raving, so I put off playing it until now. Maybe because I hated Fallout 2, or maybe I never really believed Bethesda could do the original game justice. Well I was wrong, wasn't I? My only real complaint is that it's a bit easy, even on hard. I ended up practically drowning in ammo and stimpacks. It also does get a little bit repetitive at times, especially if you feel a need to search everything, like me. I didn't do half the optional stuff, and I don't think I'll bother with it.

This is my first Bethesda game too. I tried Morrowind a long time ago, because I got it for free with some graphics card, and it didn't do anything for me. I am definitely going to try Skyrim now, and of course New Vegas.

I did this, too! It is indeed pretty short, but then I spent quite a while on the second water level which I just couldn't get past.

I thought the story was boring, and the bugs (invisible children, unsolvable side quests) killed it for me.

Edit: Actually, the invisible children wasn't a bug, just a ridiculous censorship patch, because someone somewhere wouldn't allow children in the game if they could be killed by the player. This sort of thing just puts me off beyond the point where I can forgive it and play the game anyway.

I also find it a deal breaker if I can't murder children in a game no matter how good the rest of it is.

Erm. No. That was not what I meant. I meant that having your pockets picked by children you can't even see, and seeing speech bubbles all over the place from seemingly nonexistent people was annoying and ruined the atmosphere. The game just felt unfinished, and I felt cheated. Also, the whole thing seemed like a retread of the first game anyway, with very little new in it.

Yup, wasn't it a Europe only patch, or something? Anyway, you can very easily get hold of the 'good' version of the patch.

Basically it desperately wants to be Nicalis' lovely NightSky and while it almost looks the part it can't hold a candle to the original given how frustrating the dodgy controls make some aspects of the game. Also, weirdly, it doesn't ever flag which levels you've completed and which are still to do so you need to remember where you where every time you start it up. Either way, you might as well just play NightSky as it's better in every way. Hmm, although I see now it's no longer on Google Play which is a bit weird.

33. LIMBO (PS4).

I haven't played this in years and although I can't experience it for the first time again it's still absolutely brilliant. The sound effects and ambient noise are the best I've experienced in any game ever. Outstanding work for whoever did that. The start is still better than the end - what with all the best stuff happening in the first half of the game.

Highlights:

The spider (obviously) and the particularly squelchy ending.
The brain slugs and the people wandering into the water to drown like automotants.
The creepy children who want to kill you. The hanging bodies of other children a warning to you as you enter.
Using the dead as a means to an end.
Buzz saws.
And so on.

It's the best game you've never played despite being on every platform known to man: phone, console, handheld.

And Wogan's Trouser Bulge was wrong that we wouldn't remember it cause here we are years later and a whole raft of people are playing it. In your face, Johnny, Jonny, Jobonny. And so on.

I wonder what's he's doing these days... Ah well. I liked his explosive rants.

Not only have I finished this but I've done every challenge for every level and got the best ending. It's that good.

It's so good that if you don't play it I might arrive at your residence with a psychologist to have your mental health checked over and all your gaming apparatus confiscated because you don't play good games anymore.

Vote Bunnylord for Global Mega Supreme Leader.

More Bunnylord please. Much more. And swears. Lots of swears for a sequel.

35. Super Exploding Zoo (PS4).

Unfortunately it never lives up to the name. It's harmless and piss easy fun for 80 levels of exploding zoo creatures. I say "fun" but it's a bit of a chore after a while. I kept going away and coming back and it was more bearable but it's far too easy. I was expecting it to get progressively more difficult but it never happened. Instead they introduced a bear game breaking animal called the panda who can roll around for 5 seconds or so. It uses the tilt controls so it's fiddly but any spaz could do what I did and roll it all over the baddies so quickly that is often complete the level without exploring 50% of the map. Crazy. I'm amazed no one spotted that in play testing. And it's fiddly. So bloody fiddly. Sometimes swarms of your animals get stuck on scenery as it can't figure out which direction you want to push them. And splitting up the pack is dreadful as control is wrestled from one character to another as, again, it can't figure out what the fuck you're doing when it should be blatantly obvious. So tiresome.

In fact, it's kinda fun and then it's a bit shit. Nice enough but it can fuck off now thanks.

78. The Walking Dead Season 1 + 100 Days DLC: Very, very good stuff indeed. I'd previously played and enjoyed The Wolf Among Us but TWD did a much better job of both story-telling and making you feel invested in the characters. I suspect that's largely because it's easier to identify with normal people in an awful situation than with semi-immortal fairy tale characters but, also, because with the comic and TV series in existence your brain is sort of primed to grok the various tropes of zombie apocalypse survival already. Anyway, the episodes were a bit patch in quality and the end seemed very rushed but there were enough genuine shocks and surprises along the way to make the whole experience well worth it. Aside from the relationship with Kenny which seemed to end up very negative despite what I did, all the characters seemed to respond logically and consistently to my choices which I wasn't expecting to be quite so well implemented.

Yeah, but near the start you're presented with all these choices to support either him or Carly as if that'll make a difference but he treats you like shit no matter what you do; whereas everyone else does seem to react over time to your choices.

Oh wait, I got confused and thought Kenny was the younger one.

I think me and him were good friends. Obviously things got tense a bit later on, but that's to be expected.

We got on pretty well in the first about chapter and a half but things went downhill after that and no matter what I did or said he was aggressive, defensive and irritated the entire time. At one of the major choices near the end he even refused to help me because he claimed that if the roles were reversed I wouldn't help him given how I'd acted in the past, which was just utter lies. I don't think I've ever been as annoyed at a fictional character as I was at that moment and gratifyingly the game actually gave me an option to tell him to go fuck himself. It was incredibly satisfying.

I liked TWD 1, but i haven't had much enthusiasm to begin to play TWD 2 even though i have it on steam. Life is Strange was such a revelation for this type of game that i don't know if i can go back to Telltale's style.

A bit like Rock Band or Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! but using vocoder Japanese stuff. It's ok - not outstanding, but fun enough.

I only finished GTA San Andreas last year after several attempts at getting into it over the years. Since then, I have been playing GTA4 on and off, but some parts of it are incredibly annoying and put me off (eg motorcycle missions).

Meh. A streamlined production for sure, but it just doesn't have a single original idea in it. It's also too easy on Normal, and Hard isn't available until the game has been completed at least once.

This game got a 9/10 on Eurogamer. Meanwhile, the stunningly original and infinitely scarier Forbidden Siren got a 7, just because it's a proper challenge. Tch. Tch, I say.

Bloody hell, I've ordered this for the Wii today. Should I cancel it? I've never played a Fatal Frame game before. Also, I'm assuming I can cram this up my WiiU arse to play it. I'm assuming it's backwards compatible and all that shit.

I liked Forbidden Siren too. Yet I couldn't be arsed to get it on the PS3. Go figure that out, hmmmm.

If you haven't played the first one, it's probably a lot more fun.

Also, I suspect that the PS3 version of Forbidden Siren was severely dumbed down, but I haven't actually tried it.

I haven't played any of them. I was going to play this one to see what Grim... thought was so good about the series to see if I wanted to try the WiiU one when it comes out.

Fun Roy of the Rovers-style football game where you take a young player up the leagues. I started at Mainz and got transfers to progressively better German teams Hertha Berlin and Hamburg. I also made my England debut and played in the World Cup. Stopped because of the stupid cool downs and levels where they obviously want you to spend money to get past. Fun for a while, but nagging pay-to-win doubts have made me stop playing it. Shame.
